Suspected cause
Realistically and probably the easiest on the wallet.

Pure and bullet proof engine (maybe other than the self-disconnecting coolant hose issues).

Suggestion
I also test drove the 2013 991 for grins (way out of my price range) and although it had a wonderful interior, it felt more like I was in a luxury sedan that could still kick a$$ as opposed to a sports car.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

- 991: latest and greatest
- 997.2: 9A1 platform, no IMS
- 997.1: newer look but still IMS concern and no solutions to mitigate the risks
- 996 + 3.8: more powerful and reliable engine
- other??
I don't like the look and size of 991, the rear looks too "Aston Martin" and too GT. It reminds me of Corvettes in terms of size. I'm leaning toward 997.2 for its new engine platform provided they don't have major problems (should know by then).
What's your take assuming similar usage?
Depends on planned usage. For me a streetable track car, GT3. GT3's are becoming attainable for us common folk more each year. One day, light years away, an RS 4.0.
Ah, of course the mighty GT3...too bad I need the back seats so that's not an option for me.
The price diff between a GT3 and a used 996 would probably be close to $30k in a few years though...
"The new 911 is too big, too heavy, blah, blah, blah..."
That is a tired line that has been trotted out since 1965. The 991 is an
amazing
machine and if you have not driven one, you should. I could not wipe the grin off my face for a day. I even liked PDK, though I would buy a manual.
I love my car and have no plans to upgrade. But if I did, I would buy the newest 911 with the biggest motor I could afford.
Wow, a very clear vision
I have not driven one but it just looks and feels very big to me but I guess it's all relative. If you're 6 foot 5 and 250lb then you may not find it big. I prefer the 993 size/proportion but can live with the 997 size. Same reason I don't like Corvettes and GT-Rs despite their super performance.
I'm sure 991 is an amazing machine but to me the beauty of 911 is always about good balance (look, handling, practicality, etc.), not just about pure performance.
Oh, do 991's use those engine start/stop starters? I predict that's something easy to break. I drove a Panamera with one and it's aweful. You can feel and hear the starter kicking in everytime from a stop. Very disconcerting.
Wow that's exactly my order!
In fact I want a 997 that looks like a GT3 but has rear seats.
I haven't driven a 991 but I am impressed by it. The only thing is I could realistically afford a 997, but a 991 is a long way off.
Realistically and probably the easiest on the wallet.
Rebuild my tired 3.6 motor on my C4S to 3.8. Replace the windshield and maybe repaint the front calipers. The newer cars just don't look as good and I'd be happy with more torque on an older body style that's in pristine condition. I am not interested in the electronic gadgetry, driving assists, pdk or the interior on the newer cars, I really would only like their extra power.
Now if I had over 100k or more burning in my pocket. I'd like either a 997 GT2, 997 GT3 RS or maybe a 991 GT3/Turbo.
Very nice looking C4S! Yes, I think boring the engine is a very practical way to upgrade too, especially if you already have a lot of miles on it. That would put all the reliability concerns to rest.
997 GT3 possibly a GT3 RS.....someday, in the not too distant future, but the future nonetheless....we'll see what happens when the 991 series GT3 cars arrive, I suspect the 997 will see a decent price drop, in spite of the flappy paddle issue and the Mezger engine issue (or lack thereof), if the performance numbers are there there ill be those who flock to the new one........time will tell.
997.2 C4S - in arctic silver with red leather interior or a 981 Cayman same colour combo. I still like manual but for the right car I'd be ok with a PDK!! Thinking 4-5 years down the road.
Re: What is a GTS
From the below article..
Measured against other members of the current family, it slots in just below the GT3, a car that many regard as the ultimate representative of the 997 series. The GTS isn’t quite as potent, but it’s not quite as extreme, either, nor is it as expensive.
What the GTS is, specifically, is a rear-drive 911 Carrera S with the wider rear track and muscular haunches of the all-wheel-drive Carrera 4; center-lock RS Spyder wheels; a GT3-style interior treatment with Alcantara upholstery; specific fascia treatments; and an extra helping of horsepower.
the extra output of the GTS version of the naturally aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six propelling the Carrera S isn’t vast: 408 horsepower versus 385, plus a 200-rpm drop in peak torque availability, imparting a slightly more agreeable curve to the torque band.
GTS rips to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 12.8 at 110 mph.

Damn! Definitely my ultimate and ideal 911! Will probably need to wait a few more yrs before I can afford one
Based on the current info, I truely believe the 997.2 will become a class of its own.
Panamera Sport Turismo Wagon if it was produced. By then my kids would be on the edge of out growing the rear seats in the 996. Plus it would be a bargain compared to the Ferrari FF and look better too.
Yeah Ashai, for me, it seems like a great 911. A good buddy of mine has one and it is a blast to drive, and unbelievably good looking. Kind of the best of all parts of a 911 put together, IMO.
Um...not sure it can be done safely and inexpensively. May also have problems with insurance with retrofitted safety equipments....An interesting thought though.
For me it's a C4S Aerokit 997. I went to Porsche site (before the 991 came out) and created my car. But would take a GT3 in heart beat and it doesn't matter what year.
Good taste my man, Ill +1 that!
I drove the 991 and wasnt thrilled. At the risk of blasphemy, its inching closer to being a (slower) GTR (which I also owned, and loved, and sold because I lost interest) Maybe part of my issue with the 991 was that I drove my (at the time 600HP) GTR over to test it. They really did seem kind of close to me. Especially compared to the more visceral, and intimate, experience of a 996 or 997.
To be fair I am *not* a fan of electrically assisted steering *at all* (yet to find one I like) Kills the E90 M3 and F30 3 series for me too (as well as the Audi S4 and S5) But many obviously love and do back flips for it so to each his own
I'm still in love with my current car so I'll keep it and do the Flat 6 Competition 3.8 combined with the X51 package. Can I do that? And an Ohlins suspension. Poof!
I made my choice earlier this month. I went from a 02 996 C2Tiptronic to a 09 997.2 C2 manual. I love the new car and sleep easier at night. It's the Midnight Blue one in front.
I also test drove the 2013 991 for grins (way out of my price range) and although it had a wonderful interior, it felt more like I was in a luxury sedan that could still kick a$$ as opposed to a sports car. Still very, very nice.
The 996 will probably be replaced with a Viper (owned a '99 GTS-ACR and regret selling it). But I would like a Gallardo or GTR for a DD; like the 911T, they are very versatile cars.
For my next 911 purchase, I will "downgrading" to either a '83-ish SC or maybe a 964.
I don't like where Porsche is taking the 911 since the 996. It's getting too big with too many luxury/electronic add-ons. It's turning into a touring car, not a sports car. Not that I don't think the 991 is a beautiful car, it just doesn't have the soul of a 911 anymore.
Wondering about this myself. Haven't driven a 991, but curious if they are feeling more like a 6 series BMW or Jag in terms of finish, suspension, etc than previous 911s?
