Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A friend of mine has a 2000 996 with 68000 miles. The car had the original RMS which was not leaking and then he had it replaced when he did the IMS retrofit at around 63000 miles. One year later the RMS starting leaking and he had to replace it again. I read that in some cars the crank could be off center causing this issue. Since this car went 68000 miles before its first RMS leak, do you think the crank could be the possible reason for it leaking?

POST 2Original post

My 2000 is a chronic RMS leaker due to an off center crank. It's dry now as I had it replaced a few months ago at Flat 6 Innovations. It's only a matter of time till it leaks again.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Gator thanks. At what mileage did yours first start leaking? Can they measure it to determine the crank is off center and is there any way to fix the crank? Will this eventually cause other engine damage?

POST 6Original post

Mine started weeping at 112,000. It may have been leaking prior to 112,00 but that was the mileage when I bought it. I replaced it at 118,00. Hopefully I am good to go for some time.

When this car was new RMS leaks were probably the #1 issue. If the car was ever serviced at a Porsche dealer while it was under warranty they would undoubtably have checked for any leaks. If it never leaked to 63,K miles I doubt it has a problem with the crank alignment. More likely caused by improper install using wrong tool or not using 997 RMS

Yes that was my thought also. I would be surprised if it lasted this long without a leak that the crank all of a sudden got out of alignment.
