Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am looking at this C4S cab. Let me start by saying, YES I WILL GET A PPI before buying. It appears nice. 37k miles, asking $41k, decent options, about a $100k sticker original. However, the current owner is the 2nd owner and bought it CPO. The engine was rebuilt by Porsche at 30k (a year ago). It seems that devalues the car though I realize a new engine is sort of a good thing in a way. I am not very mechanically inclined so trying to get the basics on pros and cons of an engine rebuild like this. Indicative of other problems with the car? Unrelated? I figure the car is worth between $35k and $40k though the price is not my main question.

Where would you get the idea that a rebuilt engine by Porsche would de- value the car? Did you read that somewhere? If all checks out, and you are satisfied with the asking price, then I wish you luck in your new venture. Put pics up please.

POST 4Original post

As the owner of a 2004 C4S Cab, I am very biased. ;-) Very cool that it has a rebuilt engine at 30K. As long as the PPI checks out, I would personally go for it. Like Hurdigurdiman say, once/if you pull the trigger, post more pics!

POST 5Original post

You already said what matters most...PPI. PPI. PPI. PPI. PPI. PPI. Oh, and see if you can get him to knock a few bucks off. -Eric

POST 6Original post

IMHO, a rebuilt engine (by Porsche) is actually a good thing and should give a future owner more peace of mind vs. buying a similar car with same mileage that still has the original engine in it. if PPI checks out, I say GIT R DONE

POST 7Original post

Appears to be a nice example to me. Not sure what market is for a 4S cab but if this one matches you criteria I wouldn't hesitate to make an offer. Post ppi of course.

POST 9Original post

I am looking at a very similar car down south - that one looks awesome - but I pulled the carfax and didn't see the engine rebuild or any dealer service between 24k and 36k miles? Usually if done at a dealer it will at least show that the engine/transmission were removed for repairs? I would speak to the dealer that did the work.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Experts please help me! I am not very mechanical but it does appear the work done by Carlsen Porsche was pretty major. My question is does having all this work done at 30k make the car more or less valuable in your eyes than one that has not? Also, is there anything on here I should be concerned about? Red flags? I greatly appreciate any help. I am arranging for a PPI but maybe one of you sees reasons why I shouldn't even bother with a PPI!? Any help would be appreciated.

POST 11Original post

It couldn't hurt to call Carlsen and speak to the mechanic(s) who did the work.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I started looking into extended warranties and one dealership contacted me to say they could CPO it even though it's not being bought there and even though it's a couple months past the 8 years. I had heard that wasn't possible. I am sure it will be a lot of money but I thought it was interesting and thought others might find that interesting.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Bought the car today. I'll post a couple of my own photos later in the week.
