The 3.4l and 3.6l run so close together that it has been difficult to determine if there is an advantage.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hopefully we can keep this civil NO Ims talk promise. I posted this thread in the competition section too but I just want to cover my basis.
Looking to start racing and I have been considering spec 996. I live in florida and was wondering....
1) if there is a good number of 996 spec cars racing here (no fun racing alone)
2) 3.4 or 3.6 considering weight restriction difference
3) cost of building one not including the car
4) who in Florida should I use to build one
5) if I were to run the car in its spec set up which class would it fall into with scca, pboc and NASA.
Thanks
I'm no racer but I'd go with a 3.4 if building a spec996.
I'd take the lighter starting weight and lower cost over more power.
Please post pics of your build when you get started!
It would be great if you can share your information on this thread.
I was thinking about the same thing here but the information seems to be limited. I see that the website 996specracing.com is now closed, i even wondered if the serie was still alive.
I tried to find a good forum thread on 996 spec racing but could not find anything.
I'd love to ear the pro and cons of the 3.4 vs 3.6 and the opinion on getting lower mile engine or high mile engine and rebuilt it. that sort of things that older spec 996 racer would now by now.
Even if we don't talk IMS, I think it would be nice to ear what engine upgrade the spec racer have done. I know the engine is supposed to be completely stock, what about IMS upgrade for example.
Very interesting topic as the cost of the 3.4 996 is dropping so much and we even saw a roller going for less than 10k. The 996 serie is getting more attractive each year.
some of my experience from first generation Spec RX-7 SCCA racing in Arizona in the early 90's
- when the class is small, and there is a moderate number of guys running, it's fun, cheap and competitive. Semi-junk can win a race and nobody is too serious
- when the class grows, guys start showing up with rebuilt motors, paint jobs, telemetry, crews etc. that's already beyond fun IMHO.
I never thought about the IMS, my concern was always about the lack of it having a dry sump under the stress of racing. The 3.4l and 3.6l run so close together that it has been difficult to determine if there is an advantage. So far it really depends on the driver. The cost of replacement and rebuild are now also close, so it would depend on why you are rebuilding.
I think in PCA racing the entry level choice going forward will be spec boxster or spec 996 (or other classes based on those platforms).
so much to discuss...if you are thinking about it, don't wait, get a plan and execute it. You will love racing.
