POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I will be having the engine in my 99 996 replaced within the next few weeks and I was curious on what I can expect for my core. Its got 75,000. Damged due to hydrolock. When the engine runs there is a distinctive knocking sound, dies at idle. It is the opinion of my mechanic that its a bent rod. Otherwise, the engine runs fine, no other issues. I cannot however speak to the condition of the crankshaft or C-shaft carrier. Anybody have an idea what portion of the $2313 I can likely expect? You pay the core charge regardless and await Porsche's decision correct?

POST 2Original post

if the core engine is complete and there are no holes in the crank case you should receive your full core charge back. Bill Rudtner

POST 3Original post

I have never heard of anyone not getting the core charge back if the engine was returned whole and assembled. If Porsche does not give back the full amount then they would have to tell you what was wrong with the engine, and the don't seem to want to ever divulge that info.

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 6667547

If you don't mind my asking, how much is the reman?

POST 5Original post

loong as theres no damage to the case you should get it all back.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sounds good. The engine is being picked up from the shop today. The dealer that is exchanging the engine simply looks it over for completeness and then waives any core charge. The 3.4 engine is (roughly) 16,800 with a 2,313 core charge. Therefore, I paid: 14,500.

POST 7Original post

<puking> man I wish I knew that 1 1/2 years ago <puking some more>

POST 8Original post

I porsche still paying... aren't they a little short in cash at the moment.... I would make sure you got a shipping receipt!...Just kidding...VW will probably pay! :0

POST 9Original post

Will your insurance pay the whole amount? or will they pro-rate it because it has 75K miles.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It was prorated, I had to pay an additional $1000 to cover it. Not bad in my opinion...

Anbody had experience with Flat 6 Innovations engine rebuilds, prieces, etc? I was cruising their site yesterday and they pretty much denegrate Porsche on crappy rebuilds.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Jake has a great reputation both for integrity and quality of service. His rebuilds cost between 15-20K. If you call him he'll be more than happy to talk about his engine program. I would have had my engine rebuilt by Jake but his lead time was unrealistic for my situation.

POST 13Original post

New engine for $16,800. That sounds really expensive!

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah it is pretty expensive. I'm not sure what sunset/suncoast charges but I believe its the same as my local dealer. Interestingly, my shop uses a reputable used engine supplier and they wanted $13-14K for a 3.4 w/ 65K miles and a 1yr warranty. That isnt really competitive at all..

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 6675177

The 99' C4 I just picked up had a reman installed 1K miles ago (last year) and it was 'only' $8600 bucks according to the receipt + $2500 to R&R, etc. for a grand total of $11,129.44. That included all the ancillaries such as coolant, p/s fluid, shop costs, misc. clamps & gaskets, etc. The cost ALSO included a brand new coolant reservoir, Virginai State inspection, etc., etc. According to the installing shop owner, it was purchased from a big Porsche dealer here in the area and has a two year warranty FWIW.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I believe the prices have increased steadily this last year. Dharn55 quoted the 3.4 at 11,010 last year, maybe that individual got a great deal!

POST 17Original post

Last fall whenIhad my intermix and was considering a reman engine.I checked pricing at my local dealer and at Sunset and Suncoast. The local dealerf was full list+. Sunset and Suncoast were the same, 3.4 $11,010 + core, 3.6 $8,400 + core and 3.6 X51 $9,600. I know that the prices have gone up since then, especially for the 3.4. Sunset said that they had to have an apples to apples core exchange, i.e. a 3..4 for a 3.4. Suncoast said they could do an apples oranges core, i.e. 3.4 for 3.6 and just charge the difference in core charge, which was only a couple of hundred dollars. I think that a 3..4 is abouut $14,000 now, but I haven't checked in several months. Obviously Porsche is putting the screws to 3.4 owners. 2 years ago a 3.4 was under $8,000. At the pricesthat Porsche is getting for a 3.4 reman Jake Raby'srebuilds, which I think are $15,000 plus seem pretty attractive. He does the Nikkies liners, upgrades pistons and rods, bearings, IMS shaft and alot of other things. So if I was going for a new/reman engine I think I would try to stretch for Jake's rebuild.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah the prices have gone up then. A 3.4 from Jim Ellis (local) or suncoast is now 16,500. I think Jake's price is right but he couldnt have my car back together till October and given that its my daily driver, I couldnt swing it.

POST 20Original post

Last week I had a Porsche reman engine fail on my dyno. It had 2 hours of run time on it.. I received an email on Sundaty from a 996 Owner that got 100 miles on his new engine before it broke an intake cam. The results are speaking for themselves. All I state are the facts, facts that I have documeted.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 6677385

Maybe the 996 water cooled engines are not designed very well = Is this a 'duuuhh' moment or what??? Is it possible to put a 3.0SC engine in a 996 body??? At least the guy with the 2hr broken motor has a 2 year warranty -- correct? Maybe Porsche SHOULD be bought out by VW. Now Porsche is designing a 4-seat 'sedan' - extincted by their own engineering overreach...it's one thing to be able to design anything, but not every design can be reliably produced due to materials issues, human touch labor, automated assembly, expense to maintain, etc. And I thought Wash DC Metro had problems...pardon my rant. Question: does Porsche perform the reman or is that process outsourced??? Sorry if this is a universally known bit of info.

POST 22Original post

VERY good question. One that I have wondered for a good while but never had a clarification on. You'd think at some point someone in one of these factories, or someone that had worked there would pop up online but thats not the case. The design of the M96 is great.. The downfall is the materials and "budget" the engine was subjecvt to.. EVERYTHING we have resolved with the M96 was done through better materials and some old fashioned common sense. Its apparent that the Engineers had their hands tied by the Accounting department. And asking Mitsubishi for assistance on "how to make money" did nothing except complicate things....

POST 24Original post

anyone here put a GT3 motor in a regular 996, or know whats involved in such a swap?

POST 27Original post

A few big wheelbarrows full of cash would do it! Pete

POST 28Original post

If a reman fails with 200 miles on the clock, wouldn't it be covered by warranty and be replaced no charge? Crated GT3 engines are over $20K I believe. This not including new tranny, wiring harness, DME. A redesigned M97 built after 06 would probably be a cheaper option although it involves new DME and perhaps new wiring..

POST 29Original post

First, you can find better deals if you know where to look. Call Oklahoma Foreign for one. They had a 17K mile from a 3.6l out of an 03 that they were going to sell for $7500 with shipping and including shipping for the core return. I don't know if they are still doing it, but Porsche had a 20% service discount coupon (10% from the dealer and 10% form PCNA). The coupon could be downloaded on the PCNA website. You can also negotiate with your service and parts departments. An engine replacement is not an everyday thing and with the heavy margin on these, there is plenty of room to negotiate. I paid less for my X51 that what Dharn55 posted above, despite the price increase. Yes the engines did go up, but you can always work a deal. The replacement engines have a 2 year unlimited mileage engine. If it blows up in a 23 months, you get a new engine...period. The new and reman engines both have all the latest upgrades, including the larger IMS bearing. Believe it or not, from throttle body to the exhaust port on the head, the 996 3.6l is identical to the 997 3.6l. Getting a new motor means getting improvements that are later than an 05' 997. An X51 also doesn't cost much more than a regular 3.6l. How about only $200 more. It needs about $100 in additional small parts to go into a 02' to 05' 996 6-speed. Sorry automatic owners, they don't have an X51 for the automatic. This is due to the additional vacuum the X51 requires, there isn't enough vacuum off an X51 to get the tranmission to shift. There are no harness changes. Your service dapartment can do the ECU reflash (remember there is a Techequip X51 upgrade that includes the reflash). This should be your first thought if you need an engine for an 02' to 05' 996 3.6l 6-sp. As far as Flat 6 Innovations go, it depends on what is wrong with your engine and what you are looking at doing with it. As long as the heads don't need to be repaired and there is no damage to the short block, they can do a rebuild with the IMS upgrade for about $7K. If you have internal damage, figure $13k as a starting point. I had a broken timing chain which we knew pistons hit valves when it happened (metal in the oil filter). I talked to flat 6 and they could not come close to the deal I got on an X51. The real reason to go to Flat 6 is if you are looking for an upgrade in power. They can up the displacement, install bigger cams and ported heads to get you a lot closer to GT3 power. They even do low compression motors for turbo conversions. As far as the GT3 swapover goes, you better have deep pockets. First, if you can find a used 996 GT3 engine, it is going to run $20K+. A new one is over $30K. You have wiring harness and electronic changes. Ruf for one does these conversions: http://www.rufautocentre.com/conversions/GT3.asp They have to build a custom harness to make it work. You will also need a GT3 tranmission as the M96 box from a Carrera will not bolt up to a GT1 style block. A much cheaper option would be to install a junkyard engine, sell the car and buy a GT3. If you are even putting a notion of upgrading to a GT3 engine, call Flat 6 first. From the comment about the reman engine with 200 miles on the dyno, my first comment is what are you doing dynoing it with only 200 miles on it? I was told the new engines need at least 1000 miles running no higher than 5500 rpms for breakin. I am not surprised it broke. The bearing tolerances were so tight it probably could not take the stress. From experience with my X51, I can say that even 1500 miles will not result in a fully broken in engine. It looks like they need 2500 to 3500 miles to be fully broken in.

POST 32Original post

At the replacement prices that you guys are talking about, this sounds like it is almost a viable option. 381 hp and no core charge. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PORSC...Q5fAccessories

POST 33Original post

Quotes source post: 6882527

This is a 997 S X51 engine. You can buy that engine (a 3.8l X51) for less than they are asking straight from a dealer. I would not consider it a viable of an option for a 996. You still need to build a wiring harness, adapter hoses, etc. and come up with custom ECU programming to run it. If it was for a 997 or 987, it would just be a bolt-ons with a couple of parts and an ECU flash.

POST 34Original post

The seller (Gembella USA) claims that it is a great upgrade for a 996 and they offer installation. I would be interested to know what the differences are. One of the members here, had a 3.6 X51 engine installed in his non-egas 3.4 996, without any major problems (a relfash of the ecu and a slight wiring modification to accomidate the varioram trigger?). 02 Carrera, are you aware of any other differences between the 996 and 997 engines? Thanks. That intake manifold sure is sweet looking.

POST 35Original post

This post probably answered my question... https://rennlist.com/forums/racing-a...es-matter.html It can be done, but it's a nightmare....the non-egas would undoubtedly add more problems. 02 Carrera, you obviously know what you are talking about, Thanks.
