I'll continue looking for good used (cheap!) ss exhausts as well.

I'm sorry to steal the thread, but it kind of pertains.....has anybody just taken off the cat and used a bypass pipe.

Someone asked which oil I use: Mobil 1 and changed it myself.

So, my options are to just replace the drivers's side exhaust with an OEM unit (around $450 and I plan to install it myself.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recently developed a bad baffle in my '01 996- driver's side. So, my options are to just replace the drivers's side exhaust with an OEM unit (around $450 and I plan to install it myself. OR... upgrade to a SS aftermarket unit. I've read good things about Fabspeed's unit, but it's around $1,050 shipped. Agency Power has a unit for $900 shipped (thru Vivid Racing). I have a '91 NSX (which I track) with a loud aftermarket exhaust, so I don't want a loud one on my daily-driver 996 (has 49k miles, BTW). So, I'd like an exhaust that sounds a bit more aggressive while on the throttle, but is not much louder at cruise. Little or no DRONING is essential. Any thoughts? Thanks, I'm new to this forum.
Then stay stock.
The Agency Power ones have some drone at cruising. I have them and it is ok with me thought. I do not drive the car every day and it is not so bad. The mufflers are easy to install. Took me about an hour for both sides. Putting tips on straight took longer...lol
Is there a HP difference in aftermarket exhaust that will translate to real 0-60 ( or 0-100) or is it true that the engines are designed and tuned to be optimized with the back pressure of the OEM system?
I'm not sure there is really any "true power gain" with just a cat-back. I was going to just mod my cans (PSE hack), but thought any mod that increases the enjoyment (better sound) and drops some weight (lighter cans) would be better... so I went with Tubi.
Keep your eye on the classified here and the 6... there are deals out there. I think there were a couple of TechArt exhausts for sale recently for about 1g.
Good luck
You're describing a Fister Stage I perfectly. Barely louder than stock at highway cruise--I mean barely if at all. Not the least bit of droning. Slightly more grumble at idle and very low revs/low throttle opening. Then growls when at half throttle into a really nice (but still civilized) ripping scream at >3500 rpm/>half throttle to redline.
It's the kind of sound and volume that says: sounds amazing, but just might be factory.
I agree with Jon, if you are not willing to make something the Fuster is a good unit at a good price...I did my own, same concept. just cheaper and gets hands dirty....
re: horsepower gain
while it is true that all production cars are somewhat of a comprimise, i doubt if the amount of hp avail. by simply swapping mufflers is enough to justify the extra $$$$$
given that most a/m mufflers cost 1$+, and given the 5-10 ( maybe hp) gained, probably at the top end to boot, unles one was building a full out race car, i would just be happy with some mellow tones.
YUP - what you are really after is iHP
(or imaginary horse power)
because almost without exception the non-race car driver cannot tell 5-10 hp (IMO) and what one thinks sounds fast... is fast...
that said, my new paint job is adding some serious HP to my ride
No, the horsepower is real. If you drive around at 3800 rpm instead of 2500 because it sounds better, you have an extra 50hp at your foot when you need it. So a better sounding exhaust gives you 50hp.
I mean, the Fister Mk 2 mod of a 2 1/4" pipe from the muffler plug to the exhaust exit pipe AND the 1" pipe between the inlet and the exit pipes on a 3.6 muffler. BTW, I did do the 2 1/4" pipe (MK 2) on mine, and it is GREAT, but I want more.
Thanks for all the replies. Lots of aftermarket and hack stuff for me to research now.
Someone asked which oil I use: Mobil 1 and changed it myself. Pretty easy, BTW. I believe this forum provided the DIY.
Question on the "hack" : Because I have a bad/ loose baffle (or who knows what) inside the muffler, won't that have to be repaired? How hard is it for a muffler shop to diagnose/repair something like that? Or should I get a used OEM driver side unit and have the hack done at that time? Is there a "long version" of the hack for more details? Do you have this done at any muffler shop or is it a detailed operation?
I'll continue looking for good used (cheap!) ss exhausts as well. Anyone selling?
Robin Sun makes or used to make his RSR version of 996 mufflers--cutting them open, altering the interior, and re-welding. If something is loose inside, I'm sure opening them up would facilitate resolution. His website doesn't list 996s anymore, but the google cache does. I wonder if he stopped doing 996s?
it all depends on how much louder you want the car to be. If not any louder.....buy a used set of stock cans. I for one have a low mileage 1999 21k set of 3.4 oem cans. Others here also have stock mufflers for your 01 that will probably sell
If you want performance - for reasonable price look at AfterHours Muffler or M&K exhaust. These will provide better sound and less weight than a hacked up OEM solution. Or look at GHL, Fabspeed Tubi and pay much more.
or you can do the hack....
Somewhere on some thread in a Galaxy far far away, somebody probably said they put ONE muffler by-pass pipe on one side of his Porsha. Said the sound was perfect! Two bypass pipes are too loud. Some got on his case about the 40lbs less weight on one side.....he said with a driver in the car there was 200lbs more weight on one side anyway. He had a point. Buy a pair, try putting it on one side, check it out....I may buy the other one.
For $200 each, anybody try adding one of these things? Potentially easier to rig up than the factory vacuum operated system:

I'm sorry to steal the thread, but it kind of pertains.....has anybody just taken off the cat and used a bypass pipe. (for off road use only) How does it sound?
kind of a good idea, but its not built for Porsche... so its a "universal" which IMO lends to lots of fit up issues and "Jerry Rigging" it to work. Nice looking stuff - looks quality
$400 gamble and then start "messing around" - no thanks
I've seen a couple of links to actual dyno results. From Fabspeed I see
http://www.fabspeed.com/996_GT3_dyno1.html
. There aren't a lot of details about this picture (headers, cats, mufflers, everything), but if I were to guess that everything was done, is it saying that for almost 3K you get 16 hp?
One of the usuals at our weekly coffee get-togethers had a similar situation; bad baffle. He purchased a set of stock mufflers and had them Fister-ized. They sound great, and are high value IMO
Order a set of Fister-modded cans from Darin and send him your cans on trade. He might take the one with a loose baffle. Alternatively, you could simply buy the modded cans from Darin and keep yours. Easy decision either way.
