Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Drove the car for the first time in a few weeks yesterday. Car ran fine, no lights, temperature fine. Park in the garage. A minute later I notice a major leak under the car coming from the middle of the engine bay area. Coolant leaking from the coolant hose/water pump area. Water pump shot? If so, is this a DIY repair (would hate to have to flatbed to a repair shop)?

POST 2Original post

Defintely a DIY. Do a search there are several posts on this. The pump lists for $228+, you can find them on Ebay, both OEM and aftermarket for $100+, careful some are listed for more than OEM. Also available on the internet. I found one a few weeks ago on Ebay, OEM new in the box with gasket for less than $100, bought it for "Stock" when mine goes.

I did a DIY awhile back when I replaced my water pump. You didn't hear any symptoms? Like noises from the water pump before it gave out like this? http://p-car.com/996/diy/waterpump/

Awesome DIY (looks doable)....thank you. No noises, nothing (although with my exhaust system it's hard to hear anything ...car ran real strong then...Suprise!!!

POST 6Original post

Its really not bad at all. Just to add on the refilling, its kinda a pain in the butt. To get all the air pockets out of the motor you have to "burp" the system. I did it once at the shop and it was a pain so i ended up buying an airlift, a tool that puts the whole system under a vac and sucks in the new coolant. From what i remember on burping the system you fill the system, pull the pressure relief tab (on the exp. tank) up and locked. Then you start the car and run it. Watch the temp closely and wait for the front fans to come on. then run the rpm's up to 3,000 and down to idle 10 times i think. Then i think you turn off the car and slowly open the exp cap burp the car. Other techs i have talk to will just go drive the car and take a gallon of 50/50 mix with them. Then when the low coolant light comes on they pull over and fill up. Like i said i did it once and saw it was a pain and invested into an airlift. Oh and if you forget what bolts go where the two long ones go in the holes in the waterpump that have the sleeves that stick out. Its really not a bad job. good luck

That's exactly what I did. There is a freeway on ramp near my house that's banked. I basically just hit that on on ramp at a high rate of speed, kind of make the car twist a little and immediately the low coolant light will come on. I just refill and it's good to go. However I recently did invest in the airlift kit just like you did. Really bought it for the Ferrari to flush the coolant, but probably will try ont eh 996 first.

O.K., cool...thanks for all of the advice...replacement water pump scheduled to be delivered tomorrow....I'll install this weekend...

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well I worked on the water pump replacement project yesterday and today in between a host of things. While I was in there I decided to clean the throttle body and my EVOMS intake air filer. Wow, what a PITA is was to get out that last of 7 water pump bolt (right side of the water pump right next to the engine block ). After finally getting it out I figured it would be clear sailing. Wrong. I can't get the engine carrier bracket to move far enough away from the water pump to get the pump out. The engine carrier bracket is right up against the Catalytic Converter and can't move forward enough. Looks like I'll need to loosen or remove that Cat in order to gain enough clearance. These are aftermarket 200 cell cat's....not sure if that's a factor or not. Oh well, I decided to replace the belt while I'm in there so I would not have been able to finish today anyway...back to work on the fun one later this week...
