Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Except for idle, it ran OK and the next day the cel went out on it's own.
Leading evidence: 'Run ok and the next day the cel went out' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check coilpacks' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Even if not, now's the time to clean your drain plugs on both sides.

Some CEL you can disconnect the battery and it will clear them.

I guess I'm wrong and if the condition that sets off the CEL 'changes' the system can 'reset'??
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I popped a CEL on the ALMS weekend at Mosport. The car sat at my trailer without moving for four days, of which two and a half were under monson like conditions including heavy, warm humid fog on the Saturday.
As I was driving out from the track on Sunday night and the car came up to temp, a CEL light came on and then 30 seconds after that it started to flash for 10 seconds which freaked me out, (I was ready to pull over and shut it off) and the light went back to a steady there after.
It ran like crap at red lights and stop signs - hunting around for a good rpm and in stop and go on the highway for the first half hour it was misery. Then it seemed to find a map program it liked after a half hour and it got about 75% better - but the light stayed on.
All this week it has been great weather for once and when starting up it wouldn't run well until I let it sit for a few minutes if I had to move cars around.
Saturday I take it out for a run to Home Depot (my only entertainment lately!)and driving back into the garage the light goes out!! Yesterday my wife and I go for a drive (great weather) and the car just purred along (still no CEL) and I don't know who felt better - the car or me!
So can I call this a Porsche 'give back'?
Question: Could it simply have been water getting in the system near the MAF and it took time to dry out??
I wasn't aware that a CEL would clear on it's own - I thought you could only do that through the port with the PC attached? I guess I'm wrong and if the condition that sets off the CEL 'changes' the system can 'reset'?? Have I got that right? My luck the bulb just burnt out.
Whatever - not looking at a CEL gifthorse in the mouth!
You should probably confirm this with a real 'expert', but I think that the car will reset a soft code after five drive cycles. A misfire is an example of a soft code. I haven't experienced this with my Porsche, but have with various BMW products in the family.
As Bruce states...some CELs will clear if the error is not recorded for X number of ignitions (some will not). I still think you should get the codes read so you know what happened. They will be stored in the DME.
Had this happen to me about a year ago.....stopped at a light and all of a sudden the idle starts to hunt all over the place and I get a cel. Except for idle, it ran OK and the next day the cel went out on it's own. No repeat since.
Pete
I would bet water got around a coil pack. Some CEL you can disconnect the battery and it will clear them. If you have the becker radio you might need the radio code though.
I am, thanks! Still really enjoying my little 996. Was the first Mk1 in Canada to get the IMS bearing upgrade retrofit earlier this year, and looking forward to lots of happy miles ahead. Hope for you the same!
Bruce.
Uhhh - pop the hood, remove the battery cover - then remove the cover over your brake master cylinder. If that area is full of water, you probably ingested water into your engine via the brake vacum system. BTW: your brake system has probably ingested water into the brake booster and it will rust out and fail soon. Even if not, now's the time to clean your drain plugs on both sides.
No, taking a break for awhile (23 days trackside this year so far) - too much stuff around the house to do and still have two more weekends to go.
Guess I have to buy a reader huh?
Here's a question and it goes to the area your talking about
: Tubes.
Courtney at Autowerks told me that number 5 cly has a spark plug tube that is so/so and recommended changing them all on the next service which I was going to do in a few weeks. Think this could have been the issue - water got inside?
The CEL will remain for a few drive cycles, and the OBD will recheck the system periodically. If the fault does not exist after a few iterations, it will clear the CEL on its own.
Your symptoms sound more like bad gas. If you fill up close to the time the tanker fills the underground tanks, you can get particulate matter or a little water in your gas. This works itself through your engine, and results in a very rough couple seconds, with a blinking CEL [usually denoting a misfire or potential catalytic converter problem)]. The CEL goes steady, and eventually clears itself.

Hey Dan, is the enthusiast model of the Durametric worth the $287US? It appears that it has far more options to display and modes it can clear then what a standard OB2 can do.
not sure for 996, the basic one reads all the codes and clears em on the 993 so I am fine. I would go with the $60 one or do a search here and see what the 996 guys say. instead of the 287 you can get a vag cable and software for a laptop much cheaper and I would think that would do even more. again do a search
