Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It gonna be fast though! oh... this is an RS! http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsAr...he-911/233008/

POST 2Original post

I'm turning up my sarcasm meter before I make a response about your comment on PDK

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yeah... the PDK is gonna cause alot of chatter... no more than the oil threads though. Just have to wait and see, should all be interesting...

POST 5Original post

I think PDK on a GT3 would be very cool. Faster than a 6 spd manual for sure and I bet the seven speed box can be re-geared.

POST 6Original post

Does anyone know if the PDK automatically upshifts at redline when in manual mode? I know the VW auto-manual does.

POST 7Original post

Talked to this kid that said he could not tell the difference in performance between the PDK (998?) and a 997 GT3. Must me sumpin'

It was for you guys with the 996's. It was a pic of the IMS so when many hear of one, they have an idea of what it looks like.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 6160310

I did, and I have to say... it is way cool. Very fast, similar to my SC 996... Took it up past 3 digs in a real hurry. The blips on downshift is mezmerizing.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 6160606

Yeah, I get the same experience with my A3 Sport, plus the upshifts go bap-bap-bap kind of releasing an exhaust pop each time. As soon as I test drove it, I knew I had to have it. But DSG/PDK does free you up to concentrate more on the road, plus left foot braking is possible good for auto-x or just pretending to be Vic Elford.....

POST 12Original post

It's too bad that so many people have no interest in learning how to drive a car without all these electronic controls. It used to be that you had to know a little about driving when you got into a sports car. Rather than learning to shift consistantly and quickly using your six speed, they now can choose the easy way out and have a computer do it for them. Next up? Rails on all tracks to insure that even the most novice driver can lap the ring in record time? The car does not make the driver, but a good driver can make the car and a compentent driver can almost match the speed and consistancy of the PDK with the 6 speed.

POST 13Original post

The kid I talked to said that the PDK weighs over a 100 more pounds than the manual. He also said his companies direct cost was about $18,000 for replacement. Ouch! Imagine some mark-up......

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 6160754

Sheesh. Are you suggesting we ignore technology? If you're right, Ferrari will do away with paddle shifters in F1 - not too likely. What about power assists, ABS? I drive a GT3 RS, ex factory driver, and I can drive a stick shift just fine. In a race car I'd go PDK every time simply because it saves me a tenth of a second per shift per lap. Oh, by the way, I also love the Ariel Atom 3, mine will be here in 3 months. No power anything, no assists whatsoever and a close ratio six speed. Makes me wonder how you wusses can stand to drive your Porsches with ABS, PSM, power steering and brakes etc. You should all learn to drive a real car

POST 15Original post

can I quilify as a competent driver since I learned to drive in a 3 on the tree?

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 6160848

So, if you beat a guy who is driving the same car around the track who is driving a 6 speed, I guess it is the car that won and not the driver? My point is, racing is becoming more about the car than about the ability of the driver. I agree, no abs, pms or other "sissy " controls should be allowed.

POST 17Original post

PDK is not something a competitive track enthusiast can ignore. The technology is amazing and furthermore allows for greater speed by decreasing shift times. If I was in a competitive environment the PDK would be essential.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 6161005

Ooops. The first line should read " a competitive track enthusiast cannot ignore".

POST 19Original post

So I agree with Bob and replies since, that PDK (and other aids like it) can enhance a car. Remember, anything past spec racing is NOT solely about the driver, I don't feel that it is meant to be in any case. One can argue that having fuel injection in a car is a crutch, the driver should know how to tune a carb, etc. Taken to another level, we ought to give up hydraulic brakes... I see many drivers nowadays learning to drive with computer aids, and so forth. These all have their place, those that drive with aids are not necessarily worse than the "hardcore" (or old fashioned, you pick) drivers, they are just learning a different skill set. I'm somewhat concerned with this, having been a high performance driving instructor, but cars have and will continue to get "easier" to drive... Side note, I think BMW's SMG II is more impressive as far as matching revs/sharpness on downshifts. PDK is a lot more polished, and I would consider it strongly if I were in the market. I consider that a huge step forward, as you couldn't pay me to drive a tiptronic Porsche...

Quotes source post: 6160848

Well said. You're really getting an Atom? I didn't know there was a 3, it's a new version?

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 6160405

I believe it will downshift and upshift on its own at all times if "provoked", i.e. speed drops or you hit redline.

POST 22Original post

its gotta be awesome...however, its not a manual and so flattens the playing field a bit. Removed those "missed shifts" (sorry Cory, nothing directed at you) Just the guy that chooses his shifts better takes the race (if racing...track only I mean...not that street sh*t)

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 6161681

At least his mis-shift doesn't get logged by the DME.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 6161552

Yes, it does. I asked this specific question on the 997 board when the PDK equipped cars were delivered. It will upshift when you hit redline, it will downshift if you lug the engine. So long as there are available rpm's, it will also downshift when the gas pedal detent switch is hit, even if you have it on "manual".

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 6161340

Yup, the Atom 3 you can see it at www.arielatom.com 1300 lbs, 300 HP Honda powertrain. Nice! Accelerates like a superbike, 10 second 1/4 mile. Race car suspension and brakes. Stupid fast and it handles well - a little 911-ish but trail braking is not verboten!

POST 26Original post

PDK sounds amazing, I'd love to try one out. Even though the PDK may be faster and smoother, I can't help thinking once the novelty wore off I wouldn't enjoy driving it as much as a manual.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 6160761

According to Porsche the PDK adds about 66 lbs....not 100.... I drove the PDK on a race track with my mind made-up NOT to like it.......but came away a fan......it is terrific, it offers you about 3 settings as I recall, it will change at redline but not before depending on the setting you choose, and will change gears faster than you can wink....I was really impressed and think it a big advantage for a track car.......

POST 29Original post

Jumper - you nailed it. For a mostly track driven car with an experienced driver, I believe PDK offers a distinct advantage in performance. On the other hand executing a perfectly matched heel and toe down-shift is a pleasure in and of itself. That's lost with PDK. There's one other consideration, for a daily driver and heavy traffic commuting, PDK makes life easier since it is an excellent auto box in spite of being a manual transmission without a torque converter. I have read that new sales in Europe are 73 percent PDK, on the other hand Europeans prefer automatic boxes compared to us. Still, I expect about half of the new 911's will have PDK. Best,

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 6162867

That is correct, PDK is 66 pounds more that a manual transmission, However, PDK is 22 pounds lighter than the outgoing Tiptronic transmission.

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 6160848

No PSM or TC but I do love my heat on the track sometimes. A/C occasionally ... I don't know what I'd do without the tunes on the track though

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 6162957

I totally agree, and was better off not having the choice. Now that it is available it is a very hard decision though my 996 will always have the manual 6 speed.

POST 33Original post

I've always driven manuals, but honestly the PDK has all the advantages of both the manual and the automatic. I would be hard pressed not to go PDK in a new car. It's really that good.

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 6160180

Happy New Year guys! I just got back and figured I'd check in, and saw this! I like it. I'd like it better if it didn't upshift out of 2nd or higher without me shifting, other sequentials I've driven will bounce you off a rev limiter instead of shifting, not sure on the PDK as I still haven't driven one. Aren't the RSRs already sequential of some sort? I don't think anyone who goes racing for a living is turning down a sequential when their competition has the option!

POST 35Original post

Quotes source post: 6160754

What an arrogant dick. How do you know what the people on this board are interested in learning? I drive a racecar with very few electronic aids and I love the PDK.
