Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm thinking of picking up a set of new tires but they were manufactured in 2003& 2004. They are brand new...is the Manufacture date too old and will the tires be unsafe?? Thanks

POST 3Original post

I would not buy them. It doesn't matter that they are new, the compounds degrade over time. 5-6 years old already, that's too old.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So what Manufacturer date is OK?

POST 5Original post

last month at the latest if you are buying new ones and you ae paying top dollar

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So are you saying anything more than a year is no good??? Come on, even Tirerack tire's are not that current.

POST 7Original post

I'm surprised to hear that tires of that age are even still available to be purchased. Most tire manufacturers take them back in trade as they 'ripen.' I would not take anything older than a year. 60 Minutes or someone like that recently did a tire age story and their recommendation was to make sure tires were not older than 7 years old when they get retired (no pun intended) from your car. If the tires are from 2003 they are already 6 years old,--and you should expect a couple of years of service from them, pushing their age out to 8 years. These tires need to be pliable,--and that is the element you're losing when buying them dried out.

POST 8Original post

you are the consumer here. you need to demand fresh tires. if they don't have them go to the next supplier.

POST 9Original post

I wouldn't take a chance. You must consider safety and money. How much are they asking for the tires?

POST 10Original post

Way too old. Owners manual states: "Under no circumstances should tires older than 6 years be used on your Porsche."

POST 11Original post

I dont disagree... but your reason doesnt hold water... unless you are on the "new math" system

POST 12Original post

My math is just fine. OP stated 2003 but did not state the week of manufacture. It could have been week 1 which makes the 2003 tires too old.

POST 13Original post

I have a 2003 model car. I replaced all four Pirellis with new tires in 2007 even though the car only had 6,000 miles on it. Around corners, the tires were very slippery and was way down on traction. It's really obvious how bad they were even with full tread.

I stand corrected.... holy shoot I am getting old!!! My appologies

POST 16Original post

I don't know Jake. The price is obviously too good to let go but you have consider the safety factor.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 6162118

What are you going to do with 4 225/40 tires? It will take you a minimum of 2 years to wear out the first pair, unless they start to fall apart. By then the 2nd pair will be 8 years old. I would not buy those tires at ANY price!

POST 18Original post

I just put a new set of Sumitomo's on my A3. My tire place matched TireRack price, was actually cheaper by a few dollars w/o shipping. But I did check the manufacture date before he installed them, just to make sure he wasn't selling me old tires. They were made about 3 months prior iirc.

POST 19Original post

Tires manufacutered within the last 12 mos are fine. I just got a set of Nexen 3000 ZR rated for about $450 delivered to my front door. Very happy with them.

DUH, Tim!!! < smacks forehead >

POST 22Original post

As others have said...those tires are garbage. The rubber has hardened for sure, they'll be terrible to drive on and dangerous to boot.
