Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As some of you know my engine blew up 2 weeks ago! Gutted! I have found a new 996 3.4 L engine from another 99 model with 48k FSH. The engine has had compression tests and comes with a 60 day warranty from a reputable parts specialist. I plan to keep the car till Feb and I was wondering whether it would be worth getting a new RMS seal put on before its put in the car. The engine does not have an RMS leak at the moment. Seeing that the seal cost is about $20 it might be worth getting a new one on now rather then risk it later. I know there is a risk factor on buying a 2nd hand engine but I dont plan to keep the car long. I may even sell it as soon as its up and running. Advice appreciated. P.S. 996 engines SUCK!

POST 2Original post

If it is not leaking I wouldnt bother changin it, as changing it might cause it to leak. And 996 motors dont suck your 996 motor sucked, mine runs fine and like a well oiled machine.

POST 3Original post

I wouldn't change it , might start problems. My motor runs hard and fast no leaks at 30k. I think it is a function of who assembled your motor on the line that day more than anything else. GT3 ant TT motors also are subject to RMS leaks. Intermediate shaft failure is a different story, usually a function of significant over-revs(in most cases). Good luck.

POST 4Original post

996 engines don't suck, they may not be like the old air cooled motors but they far from suck. ANY engine, even the best racing engine, can blow if it's abused or over-revved. My 3.4 has 30K miles no leaks, knocks or rattles and still runs like a scallded *** ape on the track.

POST 5Original post

If it ain't broke don't fix it. There seems to be some indications that the install has a lot to do with if they leak or not. You might install it and cause a leak where there isn't one now. If there were a precise technique for getting a good install Porsche would have documented it by now.

POST 6Original post

Do you mind if I ask how much the motor was and where you got it. I would also have to agree if it ain't broke don't fix it. If the seal isn't broken don't break it.

POST 7Original post

don't fix it if it isn't broken. You're opening, literally, another can of worms.

POST 8Original post

my '99 engine doesn't suck. no RMS, 71K miles and going strong. with the mods 283 RWHP STD-277 RWHP SAE (corrected its 340 STD - 332 SAE flywheel HP) on a dynojet dyno, but that's for another thread.... i had the chance to replace the RMS when i changed my clutch and flywheel but as they say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wow... thanks for all the replies. I will not change the seal. My engine is a 38k milage FSH which has blown! Plan to sell the car as soon as the 997 turbo comes out. Then I hope 996 turbo prices will have come down and I can get a 996 turbo which is supposed to have a stronger crankcase; same as a 993.

POST 10Original post

You know, you can blow a turbo motor just as easily.
