There was certainly a world of difference when we replaced the worn Pirelli's with PS2's.

On the wet track, as expected the compound of the Bridgestone shined and they ran circles around the rest.

For how I drive and what I use the car for, this is a great tire.

If it were my car and not tracked, I would 100% recommend the DW's.

well I tore the hell out of them day one...THEN figured out the nut behind the wheel was still loose, made some changes based on tire wear (was braking too long and on the gas too early - still wound up)

Suggestion
Another tire to maybe check out is the Dunlop Sportmaxx GT, I am running these right now and am very impressed with them for the price, only thing that I am not crazy about is the wet handling.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was all set to pull the trigger on a set of PS2s when I started reading the reviews on the Continental ExtremeContact DW. It consistently beats the PS2 and at $400.00 less for four. My C4 Cab is a street car. I don't track it. Anybody out there running the DWs? What are your impressions?
I am
I have 3 track days on them and maybe 500-700 street miles
AWESOME - I bought them from the reviews of wet traction and overall...in Seattle it rains, they work great. Very fun on track, they wear really fast so i am learning tire managment and tuning tips....great street tire, no noise, good ride, overall very happy.
I want a second set of wheels/tires for track but these are great...just want better for the track
well I tore the hell out of them day one...THEN figured out the nut behind the wheel was still loose, made some changes based on tire wear (was braking too long and on the gas too early - still wound up)
made some changes and it helped a lot - last track day I barely noticed any wear (but was in a slower group and shorter sessions) - I had sumi's on my other car and I would say they are pretty equal on wear though not an apples to apples comparison. They feel about the same on street, maybe a little better in the wet.
Ed bought his after seeing mine on my C4. I think they are great... so good I bought the DWS for my wife 968 Cab and they are a great tire for the Bucks. Get Tire Rack price quote & match that price at the local Discount tire. They handle very well and the ride improvement is significant. The DWS even has a 30,000 mile life warranty (not valid on staggered sets for Porsche but indicate life expected). They also come with a one year road hazard warranty. A winner in my book for the mostly street and NW weather.
I have had the Continental's and was happy with them, definitely not a PS2 but for the price a very good tire. Another tire to maybe check out is the Dunlop Sportmaxx GT, I am running these right now and am very impressed with them for the price, only thing that I am not crazy about is the wet handling. It has exceeded my expectations in every other category though.
I am running them. Over10K miles on them and wearing very nicely (might get 16 to 20K miles out of the rears). They are great value tire as the performance is 9/10s of the top rated summer UHP tires. I have been very impressed with the wet weather performance (including an errant snow storm) and the price very reasonable. Ride comfort is very good (I have an X74 suspension as well). While many have noted the quietness, I would say that they are average, but them I am running 285s in the rear and they are always louder.
I would absolutely put these on any car I own.
I have been thinking about the new Michelin PSS. This is supposed to be the replacement of the PS2 in the states and the tests shows them as performing better and lasting longer than the PS2, and somewhat less expensive. No N ratings yet but I hear that some new Porsche's are equipped with them.
Just had a set of Michelin Supersports installed:
225-40-18 and 265-35-18
Not much use yet but first track day on June 23rd....will post impressions after. This is the 7th set of tires of car and they replace Yokohama AD07's (previous favorite)
I going to buy Yokohama AD08 next time around. Looks like a great tire for daily and occasion track day use if rain is looming. Tread wear rating of 180. Doubt they will last very long but hey you cant get everthing in one tire. Well, possibly the supersports have it all but they dont make our sizes just yet.
The PSS is available in 225/40-18 and 265/35-18 as rideau shows, they don't have a 285/30-18 or 295/30-18 yet. But with the 2000 C4 the 225/265 conbo is the standard. The PSS also has a tread wear rating of 300.
I had the chance to test the DW last week against the Super Sport, s-04, and P-Zero and I have to say, the DW is one of the quietest tires I have ever driven on. All were good dry grip tires, but they definitely impressed me with how well they took bumps and how quiet they were. When pushed, the Michelins were stickier, but they had to be pushed hard to get to that point. On the wet track, as expected the compound of the Bridgestone shined and they ran circles around the rest.
If it were my car and not tracked, I would 100% recommend the DW's. Given I'm a noise guy and knowing what I know now - they would probably be my first pick. Keeping them in stock has been a chore however. Hopefully that gets better.
Please call me if interested.
Thanks Damon (and everybody else). I'm very interested in noise and comfort, as well. I was a little concerned because after I did a lot of research, I once put a set of Contis on an SUV and they
SUCKED
.
I'm kinda new here, so I don't quite know the protocol, but I buy all my tires through TireRack. When I finally get my s**t together, should I be ordering them from you?
The michelins PS2's are still the quietest tires I've ever had on my 996, expensive but neither are the cars we're driving. They are sublime in the rain, having been blown away by the traction on a very wet track sold me...
Conti and bridgestone are good options but second string..
Have a good summer
You guys suck!!!
I had my mind set on buying Sumis for a couple weeks now after I read the thread about how good they are for the money, but after I read this thread now I want Contis which was my orig. choice before looking at Sumis!!!!!
No wonder I drink!!!
I still love you though
DW = "Dry & Wet" ... DWS = "Dry & Wet & Snow"
Very different tread design as the "Snow" is the initial outer tread. They have unique Tread wear indicators that tell you when the "Snow" tread is gone and you now have a Wet / Try tread. And when further warn and just the "D" tread indicator is left it is a Dry road ... or "Track Tire !!!"
We have a 2001 996 Cab with PS2's and a 2003 996 Cab with Conti DW's. The DW's are nice, but I'm always struck by the improved steering precision of the PS2's when I switch from one car to the other. Both sets of tires are relatively new. Although the 2001 is an older car with a lot more miles, it feels a little smoother, softer, grippier, and I attribute that mostly to the PS2's. There was certainly a world of difference when we replaced the worn Pirelli's with PS2's.
Damon from Tire Rack and everybody else could you chime in on how these new model tires compare against Hankook Ventus V12 evo K110? I also noticed there is another new type of high performance tire made by Hankook as well but I can't think of it now looks really nice though.
My next set is Bridgestone Re0A or those new Continental Contact DW's
And to soil the path even further, and maybe stir the pot a bit for the Michelin PSS crowd, the Cayman R is coming standard with a brand new GOODYEAR tire that the magazine reviewer said made the SuperSports and SportCups seem "long in the tooth" which in my opinion it has become... and the GoodYear tire already has an N Spec rating.
Go ahead, take your shots. LOL!
Airrik,
i think you are talking about the hankook ventus v12 evo.
I got sick of putting on ps2s for my 19" LMs so decided to go for the hankooks.
Never looking back. best bang for the buck by far and great even wear.
Fairly comfortable and fairly quiet.
Damon... Did you mean to say Bridgestone ... or Continental?
"On the wet track, as expected the compound of the

I just put a new set of Michelin PS2s on my car after running with Bridgestone S-02s for the past 20k miles. I have to say that the PS2s are much quieter and are rated to last longer. The ride quality is much smoother. I haven't tested grip at the limit yet, but they seem like a good balance of characteristics (except for the $$). I wanted to get the Pilot SuperSports, but as previous posters have mentioned, they aren't available in wide-body 996 dimensions for 18" wheels.
I just put the Hankook V12 Evo K110 and Victor Innsbruck wheels on my car this weekend.
The Continental Contisport 2s were so loud and they still have roughly 7k worth of street tread left on them.
The Hankooks are nice and quiet. Totally changed how the car feels. I think the Hankooks benefit from the factory inflation specs but the contis road way to harsh with 36 in the front and 44 in the rear.
I got 225/40/18s for the front and 295/30/18s for the rear. Price was just around $700 not including the $60 mail in rebate.
For how I drive and what I use the car for, this is a great tire.
