So, I use rather stiff but effective hand controls for throttle and brake (one lever for both).
Leading evidence: 'Use rather stiff' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair /' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After reading many Tiptronic threads... I read one from
Howdy993
about the new cars being quick and reliable. Until recently, the thought of a torque converter in a race based car would be sacrilege. But now , my severe accident /SCI ... makes it impossible to push these damn little peddles on the floor... I have been warned as I look for a 996 (1st choice) car to buy... that I should be careful picking the right year Tip. Earlier years will not handle any additional power increases and are "Not Very Hearty". Now guys who have these will probably land mine me...
Is this a fair assumption, that only the real new years should be considered if I plan to build a little power?? Buzz. Easy here fellas, just looking for info, not WW4. Pic is of a product for P Tips from Japan. I think it's an entire system?
Would not recommend tip for club racing, no because of the parasitic loss but:
1. Will up shift at redline (will not hold at limiter at WOT)
2. Heat will become an issue, although it's possible that you'll find a cooling solution (then weight)
3. Impossibly expensive to repair/replace.
They are bulletproof on the street, and drag racing of course they'll be more consistent, but something tells me you aren't dragging !
If you buy a 996 tip to go racing, buy the turbo, higher torque rating helps 1 & 2 above
Don't know if REAL club racing is in the picture... but, what you say is consistent with what I was told from full time P car mechanic. He was thinking maybe someone out here, specializes in beefing up the Tips to handle more power, maybe address the red line up shift and not holding gear @ WOT. Seems like someone ALWAYS specializes in every little part of these type of toys. I had a tiny niche with GP bikes.. Maybe someone's out there?
thanks!
I would try to go newer and get a PDK cayman or PDK 997. I think even if you had to wait to save up money and for the prices to drop the PDK would be vastly superior to any torque-converter equipped transmission.
I guess I truly never really thought I could get away with getting back into a P car for cheap... Although , I allowed that fantasy to go on for quite a while. I guess its like anything... you start with the intentions of just getting in... and the next thing... your looking at getting the best shizit and newest gizmo's avalible... thats me... Thanks for the proper thoughts... FYI... My P car look started at early 993's... then went to 996 late models... now I'm at PDK models that are SO NOT what I should be doing... Just GREAT!
I don't mean to get personal B, but what pedals can you work? I guess your arms are good, but we might be able to help you better if you let us know that you have a good right foot, or whatever mods you might need.
In almost every situation, it has to come up, so those willing to help me understand my limitations. I was paralyzed a few years ago, scrubbing off sticker tires for a track day. Night time, unfamiliar severe curve caught me, deep V ditch on side of road, snapped spine at waist level. 20-25 mph... Ouch! So, I use rather stiff but effective hand controls for throttle and brake (one lever for both). So I'M trying to sort out what to get... and Tip seems best, but with hand controls, the big paddle levers seemk less like to screw up a shift. Thanks, Buzz
next time this car shows up at the shop I will have to take some pics... the driver races it with hand controls only...its a mid year 911 (70's) with a sport-o-matic, the thing is really set up cool and he's a great guy.. I was talking to him one day and it came to me that there were one two many things to do when coming into a corner, braking and down shifting....he said that was the "most interesting part" and the part the people often wonder how he does it....
I havent seen him for a few months so maybe he will be in soon for service.
EXACTLY!!! YES, You get it! I really don't want to go on too much about it.. But if I dont... know one will understand why I'm trying to get it right before I buy a car!. Thing is... Hand controls.. are far from precise... Now, I do it... after a few years.. LOL, well, after one racer friend recently tried it... He can't believe I make it to 7-11 for a Hot Dog! LOL. Now add on your customers race car, going really fast into a corner... and getting it right.. I know I'm impressed! Yes, if you ever get the chance, love to see how its set up! Thanks Again, Buzz
Sorry to hear about your accident.
1) the tips in each model (c2/c4 and turbo) are more than adequate to handle the torque of the respective motors and handle up to 700+ ft lbs in the sl65, so it's not the torque rating specifically which I was referring to , it's the torque itself: more torque, i.e. turbo, = less need to worry about being in the perfect ratio. If you plan on adding more power, the only appreciable way to do so in a tip is by buying a factory turbo and chipping, the supercharger kits don't produce the wheel horsepower you'd expect in tips.
2) re: software There are three places you can look.
a. One is GIAC/Garett Lim. They did design software for the Tip which never made it production, but it's software and does exist. I don't know if it holds the gear. Call them/email them
b. Other software tuners of 996tt (softtronic springs to mind), mb sl55 & sl65 , all same basic trans, so should have equivalent software re-flash methods. Even if they haven't built one, they may be able to point you in the right direction
c. A race shop which campaigns 996s, like Rick Deman at Deman Motorsports. Many may have come across similar requests and may have a suggestion.
3) Let's say it won't hold the gear, you speak to these guys and no software can help, it just won't. But an smg bmw m3 will, and will be inexpensive to operate (boxster money to acquire as well). Terrible trans on the street, but probably pretty nice on the track, if a fortune to replace. But the motors are solid, no worries there.
A corvette will also hold the gear but honestly, I'm not sure what the lap times will look like.
Or you could say screw it, focus on your lines, and let the damned 996/7 or even boxster tip upshift in the middle of the occasional apex and plan accordingly
Great thoughts. I'm more likely to say.. screw it... and let it shift where ever it wants. I set track records 25 years ago in FF and Atlantic's, etc. Now, want a little fun street driving mostly, a few track days maybe... so... Software idea.. perfect... Corvette done it, Let it shift... Yeah ... thats where I'm thinking makes most sense! Seriously appreciate the good thoughts and info. Buzz
