I've owned my car for almost five years and I have not once checked the mpg.
Leading evidence: 'Check mpg' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). filters changed since i took ownership in April...plugs and C/P have not been touched since i have had the car...oil filter changed a few days ago...i only use 93 octane...since the car is not missing and the durametric is not throwing any faults I did not think it was time to change the plugs and coil packs

When I changed oil and filter @2 weeks ago and drove to work the following day I was getting 35-36 MPG.

I am curious to find out why mileage has changed so dramatically.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

fill up the tank and by the time the needle hits the first mark, I have only gone 50 miles...I dont think I can get 250 miles on a full tank...i calculated 14.7 miles...my F-150 gets better mileage...my wifes 993 gets WAY better mileage...i have 90k on the odometer btw...what's up with that?

Check your owners manual for maintenance intervals. I would imagine 90K miles might call for more than just an oil/filter change.

Do you have proof of 60K miles service being performed?
I am curious to find out why mileage has changed so dramatically. Any chance its a bad gauge? Do you have any problems getting fuel in the tank - ie, are you getting the # of gallons at fill up time as you would expect based on the gauge reading?
i know something is off...but where do i began looking? I have records of services done up to the 60k mark, after that things get cloudy...I am a DIY kinda guy but need to know if anyone has had this problem before, and if so, how did they fix it
I don't think your mileage is at all unusual. I have had my car for 11 years since it was 6 months old and had 4,000 miles. Around town I have always averaged 14-17 MPG, and can go down to 11-12 if I drive it hard. In the highway I can cruise at 75-84+ and get 26-28. The mileage has really not changed much since I got the car.
Density altitude and roads. Check to see if the plugs have been changed. I don't think porsche chnages them till 100,000 miles hehehe insane. If you have been on a green kick burning ethanol you're best off stopping that. We don't have a choice here thanks to government won't allow anything but junk gas.
+1
I have found with mine(2000 C2) that the MPG is VERY poor if you are heavy on the loud pedal. OTOH, my car gets very respectable highway MPG.
I swear I can watch the fuel gauge go down when I am driving the car hard on back country roads.
Bingo!...that is what happens to me...I literally can watch the needle drop in as little as 35 miles...but i guess from reading a few of the posts, that is the norm...I have not taken a long road trip as of yet, so all of my concerns will hopefully disappear once that happens.
My MPG averages 25.5 all the time. I reset it at every fill up. My 996 averages 30 MPG cruising on the highway at 70 mph and get an average of 19-20 city driving.
This is not rocket science boys.
If you drive the car the way it was meant to be driven and you do more city driving than highway driving, at best you are going to average 16 mpg.
If you drive the car the way it was meant to be driven and you do more highway driving than city driving, you are probably going to be somewhere around 20 mpg.
If you drive like your grandmother who can't even reach the peddles than you are probably going to be somewhere around 25 mpg and in that case, you should even own a pcar.
As someone said in a different post, drive it like there's no tomorrow and the excitement of doing so will make you care less about the gas mileage!
Enjoy the weekend driving!
EPA estimate for city mileage was something like 16-17 mpg, but that was on "good" gas. Current gasolines yield about 5-10% LOWER mpg (yep...the EPA at work!).
So...if you're measuring 14.7 mpg with all city driving, that is not unexpected.
If, however, you're measuring 14.7 mpg during highway cruising, then something is definitely wrong. As other posters note, highway cruising mpg of 25-ish should be expected and that's what I get in my mk2 996. From what I've read, one symptom of stuck hydraulic valve lifters is really crappy fuel mileage--Jake Raby of Flat6 has posted this previously, and he knows what he's talking about when it comes to 996 engines.
I recommend you do a bit more testing, under somewhat controlled conditions: take a 100+ mile cruise of primarily highway miles, and measure mpg during that drive. If mileage is still very poor (say, less than 20 mpg) then a visit to a good Porsche mechanic may be in order.
Good luck
I've owned my car for almost five years and I have not once checked the mpg. I can tell it's pretty decent on the highway, but the way it's usually driven it's much worse. When it's gets low, I fill it up and enjoy it!
My car gets very bad mileage as a daily driver, mainly due to the 1 mile each way trip. 12-15 mpg even with driving 3k and lower RPM the whole way. However, if I go on a longer trip with one of the local car clubs, my mileage improves substantially even while driving very sporty (RPMs above 4k in general). It just really hates the first mile.
Highway mileage driving at normal speeds with an occasional 4th gear blast-to-pass is 30+ mpg (based both on the trip computer and gas receipts).
When I got my 996 in May this year, mileage in town was average 19-22mpg. When I changed oil and filter @2 weeks ago and drove to work the following day I was getting 35-36 MPG. Stunner! Spark plugs are due for change with almost 37k. I would smile more if it increases.
