Things on the BMW are too assisted, especially the steering and brakes, making you feel a little disconnected from the car.

The gas pedal also is "notchy" and has been replaced once by the dealer.

Suggestion
If you really want to trade/sell your car, i would consider an older used m3 or a newer 335i, not the 330i.

I am thinking I will trade/or sell my '00 C2 with new motor and 2 year warranty.
I was mainly curious as to what your great minds thought of this trade........
My wheels are turning and I know I will take a loss, but I am very curious what the community thinks would be a "good" trade for me.
My '00 C2, 61,000 miles, new motor................ for a
2006 BMW 330I, 25,000 miles, CPO, sport and premium package
Thank You!
Orrin
I like BMW's but why go from a 996 to a...frankly mundane 330i??
But whats GOOD is what makes you happy!
I remember when I sold my old 88 951 a bought an Audi S4, it was a great car but I missed the 951... in less than a year I sold it for a Boxster S
Would never entertain the idea for a 330i, unless practicality is an issue. Now for a nicely loaded 335 that would be a possibility. Ultimately do what makes you happy and caters to your needs. Best of luck in making a decision!!
FWIW, I had a 2004 330 with sport package, and now have a 2007 335i without. I preferred the ride and handling of the 330 over the 335i. Although the extra ~50 ponies are addicting, the 330 was a great car in its own way. The sport package makes a huge difference.
That being said, I did/do not like either the 330 or the 335 better than my 00 C2. Things on the BMW are too assisted, especially the steering and brakes, making you feel a little disconnected from the car. The 911 has a better interface, IMO.
I say keep the 911.

I'm just basically fed up with the P brand unfortunately. (Per my post yesterday) I now have a problem with the front end that I think is a wheel bearing. The gas pedal also is "notchy" and has been replaced once by the dealer. It is still just as "notchy" and they say there isn't anything wrong with it. Not a big deal, but just more hassle and a little money on the wheel bearing (the pedal has a 2 year warranty).
Plus, the wife would be happier if I got something bigger.
Thank you for your input. I really, really appreciate it.
I was also curious what price you guys as far as a trade and what would be a good deal for me based on the 2006 330i, 24,000 miles, CPO
Thanks
wow - I got out of my '04 325Ci and into my '02 996. comparable millage and scads more fun to drive. that beemre felt like a floaty, smushy, frigging boat (yes, it was my 3rd, the 540i was best)
IMO - bad idea
I probably would be looking to exit your car after all the trouble in such a short period of time. Something is not right with it. 335 - yes. 330 - no. Just my opinion.
Good Luck. Why not sell your car vs. trade?
I think you got a bit of a lemon my friend, but that doesn't make your experience any less real or less sour.
Do a 335 if you do a BM, and chip that sonafabich for pennies, it's a nice anonymous cruiser, a Q-ship. The previous car is pretty bulletproof as well, but the new one is bigger and faster and has more warranty. Consider trading it on a new car and lease. No service, no maintenance, tax deduction, decent fuel economy, very quick in a straight line.
I also have driven a z4m recently and it was fun (more corvette like though, I was afraid to corner too aggressively).
And why not try to get into a corvette? They seem to never break mechanically (at least I don't hear about it as much, might be wrong).
I say keep the car at least another year, your 2 year warranty is great and you should enjoy it. Take a few bucks replace the rims or get a few aero pieces, do the exhaust mod if you haven't already and you'll soon forget about the the tough times and start to enjoy the car again. You are going to take a killer loss on trade in since new engine does not necessarily compute into the car being worth more money from a technical standpoint. It does give the new owner piece of mind, but thats hard to put a definite price on, most people may even take the replacement as a negative as in something seriously wrong with the car. Not all of us owners are also enthusiasts.
If you really want to trade/sell your car, i would consider an older used m3 or a newer 335i, not the 330i. i've owned a m3, 528i, 530i, 330ci, and x3 all with sports packages. loved the handling and the modern look of BMW, but just not in the same class of p car. loved the 330ci, but more for my wife. not aggressive enough to my taste. it all depends on what your needs are. For me, p car connects more to my soul. Might also want to look into the 5 series. I know you can get a used m5 relatively cheap these days! Good luck.
i haven't driven the 135, but a couple of weeks ago i was at the track and the stock 135 there was tearing up the track. i was very impressed with handling, etc., that i observed.
i may go with my brother when he test drives one. seems like the car is a great value in terms of bang for the buck for a german car.
I agree.. I dont know if you saw that test of the 135 vs the Cayman non S, the 135 did pretty well, it was faster in the slalom and in the track.. I think the test was not fair for the Porsche (245hp vs 300hp) but still the 135 seems to be a great little car
You want to go from a P-car to an 06 BMW?
If you want a bigger car why not get an 06 Cayenne Turbo?
BMW blows in my opinion. They are too heavy, too common, and too many overcomplicated electronics. Quality in the interior and construction is poor compared to Porsche.
You'd be better off spending your money on a Lexus.
I don't see how the 135 can be that great when it weighs nearly as much as the 3 series, and has less HP. They should have cut the weight considerably. Plus if they are putting it up against a non-S Pcar, you know they aren't very confident in their product's abilities.
135 has the SAME hp as the 335, it has the same TT engine... it is a bit lighter, 150lbs I think.. They compared it with the non-S car becasue of the price.. still the nonS was more $$
If you really wanted to go crazy you could probably turn that 135 into a little club racer for not so much money, I'm sure it can be lightened, and it does have the same motor and rated power.
For a street car I would go 335 pretty much al day, but it's an endless upward spiral of tightly priced models at BMW, for the cost of an optioned 335i you're only 10K from an M3 (which you will not be modding as much), and then you ask yourself why not do a 997S for that money, and you're back in Stuttgart
I do hear that too much boost for too long and things start cracking on the exhaust side, but I was very tempted (until I saw the price) to do the 335 hardtop convertible and just chip the hell out of it.
I agree that the Fifth Gear comparo was a bit of a ruse.
With that said I love the 135. While possibly overpriced it is still both faster and more affordable that the 335. A guy on 6speed/bimmerboard posted a video of him in his gallardo being beaten in several drag races by a 135 with a flash and exhaust. Incredible car.
So, how much power do you need for this? I think an '06 330i is a great car but maybe the A/C unit works better in the twin turbo 335i during rush hour?
It all depends what you want to do with the car. For the track; keep the 996. For a daily driver and some fun street driving from time to time the 330i has plenty of power! The new engines rev to 7k, have a great sound and got much better low end torque than any n/a 996 engine. I was not too impressed with the 335i compared to the 328i or 330i; main difference for any 3 serie makes the sport package due to a better suspension and great seats.
Uhm, there's only ONE BMW that will satisfy a 911 owners needs in a performance car. I'm not sayin what it is, but it does have the letter

M
in it!!!
Seriously tho, no other BMW is going to give you the visceral feeling a 911 does other than an M car. The 135i - 335i won't come close! E46 isn't quite the car the 996 is, but it WILL satisfy daily driver needs, while quenching your performance desires.
The new M3, well, that's a whole different story.
Don't believe me, go on some test drives!!
New 135/335 hangs with e46 M3 stock and spanks it with a $1500-$2000 reflash. Also with the reflash it is in the same league as the e92 M3 and other more expensive cars. e92 M3 is an amazing car when compared with the AMG, RS, and F series rivals but imo the 35's are 8/10ths as good for $20,000 less.
The 135 and 335i are not 8/10ths as good. They are not 1/10 as good as the new M3. Just cause they seem good on paper, or they keep up, has NOTHING to do with the driving experience. I drove them all, and all I can say is that the older M3 is WAY more fun and better overall than the similar performing 335i.
The 135i and 335i, flashed or not can not be compared in ANY way to the new M3. Just cause they may keep up, they are NOT performance cars. They are simply fast, good handling family coupes/sedans!! Same as driving a 330i and simply adding more power.
The M3 is simply the greatest car I have ever driven. This says a lot coming out of a 911 Turbo and 3 Porsche's before it. The 335i is not in the league of 911's and M3's, plain and simple.
If you have driven them, you will agree. If you have driven them and don't agree, well, we live in different dimensions or something.

Gant,
The new M3 is the ONE exception to my BWM blows rule. You have the best BMr out there by far! No substitute!
Ya man. I don't and never did hate BMW's before this one, quite the contrary. But when I drove this one, I simply could not believe the awesomeness that this car is. I still can't.
When you start really ringing this car out, the climb to 8500 RPM is unreal and just KEEPS going, it's like you're in a formula car or something you've never experienced driving. The feel, the sound.....it's celestial/ethereal!!!
HAHA!!! I love it!!!
I think from a psychological standpoint, there is always some truth to it, especially when you make a large purchase/commitment.
Nowhere else is this more obvious and apparent then when I see my friends brag about their wifes and how lucky they are to have such a great wife. In most of these cases, it is SO trasparently "Post-Purchase Rationalization!"
Anyway, thanks for killin my buzz!!
Hey, I live in Iowa...90-100 mph on the Interstates isn't uncommon or even very hard to pull off. I drive 40k+ miles on these roads every year and average about a ticket per year, using a V1.
Hey, Orrin - Based on your experiences, I'd trade the Porsche for another brand. I think you'll find that there's joy and risk with whatever you choose. You've suffered through a lot of crap, so your feelings about the Porsche are justified. But, there are a lot of really happy, satisfied owners on this and other websites - you may be back.
That being said, why not shop for an older M5, if a larger car is a consideration? Personally, I'd pick up a used Audi A4 with the 3.2 engine. We had a 2007 A4 3.2 Avant - it was a blast (turned it in at the end of the lease b/c wife wanted a minvan
).
Good luck and enjoy, whichever path you take.
Bob
Gotta agree- just took a 03 M3 in trade and aside from not really caring for the smg tranny it is a fun and quick car- no 3 series has ever compared IMO - that said I would still drive a 911 over any BMW car
I drove an 08 Boxster S for a couple of days last week, it's very quick, and really a lot more civilized than my 996. If you can find a CPO Cayman or Boxster at a pricepoint you like, you're likely to do well on your trade with a Porsche dealer.
I have an 02 C4S and an 08 M3 sedan. Both are fantastic cars, but they are like comparing apples and oranges.
To me, a regular 330 would be boring, unless you need a real back seat or trunk.
