Fixed under warranty (Porsche extended), but I don't think they're that expensive to fix anyway at a good independent.

Mid-High Mileage 65K+ Question

Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

Suggestion

...the engine replacement (under warranty) issue only arises, I believe, once the OPC has had to replace the RMS three times or more.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, Is it safe to say that in a 99 w/ 65K+ miles, the RMS problem would occur less frequently? My logic is that if it were to happen, it would have already happened and fixed. Or it has not happened, it will not happen. Does this make sense at all? Thank you.

POST 3Original post

...my '99 C4 developed an RMS leak at about 85k. First one. Fixed under warranty (Porsche extended), but I don't think they're that expensive to fix anyway at a good independent. Mileage now, 92k and going strong!

POST 4Original post

Interesting thought, my 99 is about to turn 50K, No history of RMS. (knock wood)

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you. When is it not expensive to fix? When you find it right away? The more I read about post threads regarding the RMS, the more I am confused. It seems that it may not be a serious problem, only costing ~$1k-$2K at most to fix for some cases. However, there are also cases when you need a new engine. Is this only when you leave the RMS problem on the car too long? Thank you.

POST 6Original post

It is and is not logical. It seems that the RMS "problem" happens more frequently with cars that "sit" a lot....ones that are not driven "a lot". On the contrary, the RMS is mostly rubber, and with higher miles, heat cycles, environmental factors, etc, it gets hard and crusty, and will fail. So I think you are damned if you do, damned if you don't. I think it is a matter of when it will fail, not if it will fail. (wondering if i am making sense at 0530) Tim

POST 7Original post

...the engine replacement (under warranty) issue only arises, I believe, once the OPC has had to replace the RMS three times or more. This number of failures points to the engineering of the parts of the engine itself being out of spec - hence the need for a new one.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for your help!

POST 9Original post

Man Rick, I love that Goat! I said it before and I'll say it again...that is one of the best cars that ever came out of Detroit. Jim

POST 11Original post

Try fixin a main or a rod bearing on a 993tt that has failed. $15,000 if you're lucky... but probably more.

POST 12Original post

actually the replacement engine is required when the engine mating surfaces are out of spec - this leads to the multiple RMS failures - i.e. b/c of this the RMS will always fail due to the seating surfaces. I have heard of cases where the RMS in cars (on this board) was replaced multiple times and Porsche replaced the motor. The bad thing about RMS issues is that the engine "could" be out of spec in the seating surfaces which means you will never have a sealed up motor and the moving bits will not mate up correctly. The "Ho-Hum" part about the RMS seal is that they have re-designed it 3 times, i believe, to work better. so it was never 100% in the first place. Replacement of an RMS seal is not an indication of a bad motor. The good part - not to sure about that one - i guess you now get the redesigned seal.

POST 13Original post

There has to be some kind of sealant that can be put around the RMS to cure this...wonder why no one has come up with a fix...

POST 14Original post

The whole RMS failure problem is difficult to get an understanding of. There cases of failures and fixes that that seem to last at the same time there are failures that continue to happen. Also there are failures that have resulted in the replacement of the engine and there are cars with no failures at all. There really isnt any predictor which case a car will fall into. The problems or lack thereof, seem to happen over all the model years of the NA cars. The real question that everyone wants to know about (and no one except probably some people in Germany really knows) is whether the RMS failures are symptomatic of a more serious problem or merely a problem with the seal its self. That saidthis is purely speculation, but.....It would seem that if the motor was defective so that it should or would be replaced, the RMS issue would have reared its ugly head by the time the time the car has 65k+ miles. In other words if the seal has not failed yet at 65k+ miles it would seem logical that engine was in spec. and that any failure at this point would seem to be purely a failure of the seal and not because of a defect in the engine. A RMS failure purely because of a failure of the seal and NOT as a result of a problem with the engine is not all that serious (seals fail with time and wear). Will it fail? Who knows. My Dads Toyota Camry had the RMS replaced at 150k miles does that mean the engine is defective? Probably not. In the 80s my parents had a Camaro that had 4 RMS failures in the first 20k miles, then never leaked again for the next 130k miles (well the engine didnt but the T-tops did).
