Phil, I rembered that you had installed clear side markers, because I photoshopped them into your current avatar pic.

I had the clear bra installed on my C4S before I picked it up.

Suggestion
When my daily driver was a $10k Miata, wrecking it would have caused me infinitely more duress than wrecking my 996, which would simply be replaced with a new car with the insurance money.

It worked well on my 964 C4 and that was the old tech paint.
Yes I owned a C4S....NO I never took it out in the snow.
With snow tires how good IS it?
I SOOOOOO want a TT but with the snow we get here I have heard the torque will make it hard to deal with in the sloppy stuff.
Opinions?????
here we go.....My 4S with Blizzaks is the best car i've had in the snow...second being a subaru forester. It's incredible. Do a search with "winter" in the title...search thread titles only, and you'll see a load of recent threads.
The power issue is nonsense.....all cars can be driven carefully in the snow.
Best of luck. Here's a picture to get you more interested.
j
My TT in the snow is bar far the best car I have ever driven in the snow...other then my C2, now thats a great winter car
No worries put good snows on and enjoy it, the only foreseeable problem you might have is clearance.
again....take it easy with your right foot....it's that simple. There is NO reason why you would have to put the "pedal to the metal" in the snow. The torkue doesn't have to get away from your control if you maintain control yourself.
J
Never heard such nonsense about torque/power - get snow shoes on, and then get out there. Oh!! Dont turn off PSM please.
Best winter car!!!
(I've driven 911's on ICE!!! lakes with spike tires - fantastic fun.)
I agree with all the others. My C4 with winter tires is un-stoppable. During a recent snow storm in rush hour, I literally got out of my car to push other cars out of my way and then kept going. Ground clearance is your only issue.
Not trying to justify for driving in the winter.
It is THAT good! You will get a kick out of how well the thing hooks up.
Better than both my SUV's which are all wheel drive also.
If the only way you know how to drive is to plant your right foot, then you probably shouldn't try it in the snow....
There cars are quick, but also incredibly graceful when driven delicately.....
Last winter while driving my C4S with Blizzaks, I passed a Volvo that was stuck on a hill. I had to swerve onto the shoulder and cut a path through fresh snow. It's that good.
Even with my 78 Targa I have to use higher gears in the snow/ice, especially starting up from a full stop. My '01 C4 doesn't go out in that stuff and if I got caught out it would go the shortest distance to its nice warm garage bay.
Not that I don't trust it to handle well I simply don't trust the other drivers' driving capability nor that of their vehicles.
My '01 AWD RX300 is reserved for that duty.
Or for intentionally driving into the more servere stuff, going snow skiing, etc, we have the '94 R/AWD Ford Aerostar.
I am amazed at how hard it is to get the yellow traction light to activate. If you have PSM and egas, your throttle will get chopped and it might save your butt. I pulled a kid in a jeep wagoneer out of a snow bank last night and he said the reason he crossed to the wrong side into the snow bank was because his truck did not have "antilock" brakes. You can only imagine the lecture I gave him as I was slowly uncoiling my tow strap...........................damn kids think computers solve everything!
PUT ON SOME SNOWS AND DRIVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Merry new Year,
Steve
Every 911 and the Boxster I had have lived in the snow. With proper winter tires you will have no problems and will probably find you have better traction and control then 90% of the other cars on the road. Modern winter tires give you 30% more traction on ice and snow than most all seasons.
When the road is icy or snow covered, just drive like there is an egg under both the brake and the gas, and all will be fine. You just need to avoid quick braking or acceleration. But what ever you do, don't be one of the idiots out there driving 10mph. Get up to a safe speed and don't be a wuss.
I look at my C2 in the garage every day and wish I was driving it. I think next year I will buy a second set of wheels and winter tires for it and try it.
Here's a post-pumpkin pic - you know I have them! So:
Step 1: Photoshop clear corners on old pic
Step 2: Photoshop photoshopped 1st pic in driveway into garage.
Phil, I rembered that you had installed clear side markers, because I photoshopped them into your current avatar pic. Your previous avatar still showed the pun'kins.
I will have to p-shop them later today, becasue we are going to look for new carpeting in a few minutes! That should be fun!
Wayne, actually it was the other way around. I fgured it was only fair to park his car in my garage since my shoes were parked under his bed a while back when he was out of town!
Of course, I'm just kidding!
Looks like Camp 4 is no longer in the US. There is plenty on youtube and if you like you can go to Findland. The only issue with a C4S or TT would be getting high centered in deep snow

Yes they are great in the snow. Mine is a daily driver with Pirelli PZero Neros all seasons. I live in Northern New Jersey (north and west of NYC) and we get lots of snow and the c4 has never let me down.
In the last storm we had I was out in my wife's MDX, picking my oldest from college when my wife got a come "rescue me" call from my youngest daughter. She was basically in an unplowed area on the top of a hill and my wife took the Porsche and got her home with no problems. We both now have a new found respect for it.

I was out yesterday and backed down a neighbor's packed snow/ice driveway. He and his sons were working on a snowmobile. When i reached the level bottom he said "if you cannot get up the driveway, your car is mine". I smiled and made sure nothing was behind me, smiled, turned off the PSM, and nailed it. The neighbors and myself could not believe the two large white rooster tails behind my car as it blasted up the hill! The steering was a bit squirly but it went where I pointed it. I am going to have to keep a strap in it as I know I will have to pull some SUV out of a ditch one of these days.
Tim, I've said it before...regarding a turbo in the snow...it is not me I'm worried about. It is the other a$$hole that can't drive in the snow...a $100+/-K car with others on the road...I don't think so.
Hey guys, I would not be afraid to drive in the snow but remember one thing. It's not that you can't go in the snow, that is the easy part. It's the stopping. Plan ahead what ever you are driving!
Woody
(I know my signature says Florida but I came from snow covered Wyoming)
<shrug> Joe Sixpack that can only afford a $20k car is probably taking a much bigger chance driving in the snow than someone that can afford a $100k car. When my daily driver was a $10k Miata, wrecking it would have caused me infinitely more duress than wrecking my 996, which would simply be replaced with a new car with the insurance money. YMMV, but the crazies are out every day regardless of the weather, so I'm not sure why I'd be any more scared of them one day than another.
Yes, but on dry roads I can out maneuver and out accelerate the SOB...this may not be possible in the snow...BTW have you ever had a car slide into you while you were just sitting at a light? Quite a powerless feeling.
Why risk it, just get a winter 4wd suv or something...
Eh, there's no way for you to know that.
No, but I've been rear-ended twice while sitting on dry pavement. A performance car wouldn't have helped, and the weather didn't make me feel any less powerless.
That's the point; I guess I'm confused as to what I'm risking. It's just a car, and I'm more equipped to deal with an accident with my Porsche than I was dealing with an accident ten years ago in whatever I was driving. Plus, I can't imagine not driving my car because I'm paranoid that someone is going to hit me, regardless of the weather, especially when the alternative is to squeeze another vehicle into my life. I guess I'll take my chances...
Wow you are really trying to sell me on this aren't you?...Sorry, I like my Porsche too much to take the added risk of driving in poor conditions. I guess as you say it is just a car, but mine is my dream car and I want to keep it that way. I'm a statistician and I don't take chances without considering risk/reward. I don't really see any reward in driving my turbo in poor conditions, yet the risk is higher.
The reward is not having to spend the extra money on other "winter" cars, as well as being able to drive your ride all year long. However, overall cost must be considered, and with a TT, there is a considerable higher premium paid. While I drive my C4S all year, I'm not too sure if I'd drive my TT in the winters either. Tough tough decision. Also, I got a great deal on my car (last year with CPO for 42.5k) which made it a bit easier to decide.
I had 3 cars before, and got rid of the other 2 when the winter rolled around. My bimmer was nothing special and with the new AWD car, there was no need to obtain another lease. Also, just sold my '85 targa...poor thing was just sitting. Wasn't fair to her to let her gather dust, so I recently sold it to a new Pelican head....phew. So much easier to watch these cars to go newbie enthusiasts.
So...i totally get where you are coming from. When i get my TT down the Road, or GT2 in 5 years, I'll keep my C4S as my "beater" winter driver....lol.
J
My C4S is my dream car too... however, it is just a car. I looked at getting a new Saab 9-5 for a daily driver and winter, but the extra 30k just wasn't worth it. And every day I don't drive my C4S I just feel like it's a waste.
jmtc,
Rob
I've got a 4Runner and a Vette with my C4S coming in (8 weeks shipping). I have snows for the Vette but it is not much fun to use in the snow. My 964 C4 was a much more usable and all year drivable vehicle. That is why my Vette is going - bring on the snow!
Understood...if I only had a C4 I would drive it year round as well...Fortunately I have 2 other SUVs for driving in conditions that are less than optimum for my turbo cab.
Peace.
Other than clearance, it is one of the most entertaining & safe cars to drive, in any given weather. (snow included!)
its predictable, breaks are fantastic, and as long as you have the right set of of rubber, you'll be just fine.
Funny, I've had the same experience. The only two times I've been in an accident with another vehicle has been in good dry conditions, while I was stopped, and inattentive drivers hit me from behind and on the side.
WOW you guys just don't give up...I take my turbo cab over a C4 or C4S any day...wanna roll? I guess I'm too old for white knuckle driving with a $100K car...this would not be enjoyable for me...if it is for you...more power to you....peace out.
The winters in CO are probably worse than the winter months in NY too. Wross, your car is lowered as well isn't it?
Probably not ideal to be driving in the snow... which is I get.
I paid over 100k for my car, bought it from IRA Porsche in Mass and drove it home to NY - in Janurary, that was a bit nerving for sure!
There was no snow except for about 1" on my driveway which is on an incline. I got half way up with the new summer tires and that was it (I have a 400ft driveway) I had to go down to my neighbor and ask him to push my $110,000 car into the driveway - he was said "your'e a tool"
Rob
Lets look at this winter driving from another perspective, especially for those of us with older 996's with lots of miles. If I take my 93,000 mile car to a dealer to trade, they are will only offer probably less than $20,000. If I try to sell privately, I will be probably getting around $25,000 at most. If some yahoo with a pickup totals it on a snowy day, my insurance will give me the retail price which is closer to $30,000. I just need to make sure the accident is not my fault. I also have to make sure the accident totals the car.
Now if I could just figure out how to make this happen without anyone getting hurt, it almost sounds like a good plan to get myself into a newer car for less cash. So I don't worry about driving in the snow. I know that with good winter tires, I have better control then most of the other people on the road and most likely they will hit me rather than me hitting them.
Rob...the problem with winters in CO is they put gravel on the roads (not sand...gravel) Driving around after snowfall is like sandblasting your front end. Yes my car is lowered and I don't have winter tires
I don't want to admit what I have in the car, but I assure you if it got totaled, I would be on the losing end of the deal.
This is the first winter with mine, before I had an Evo VIII for 3 years, 2 of which the winters it had snow tires on it. The C4 has snow tires on too, of course, but it is godly with PSM on. Its like driving an SUV only its a little lightweight car that doesn't feel like its tipping over if you start to slide. Not nearly the torque or the power of the TT, but there's plenty of times where I floor it and PSM just flashes on and just keeps me going straight
3M clear bra solves the biggest winter worries. That was the first thing I did to mod my car (and it is not even here yet). It worked well on my 964 C4 and that was the old tech paint.
I have that clear bra on all of my other cars...honestly the clear bra looks like sh*t with defects from rocks hitting it...sure the paint is protected, but it still looks really bad so what's the sense?
I had the clear bra installed on my C4S before I picked it up. In retrospect I would not do it again. I hate the way it looks and would rather repaint the bumper.
For any reason? I can understand if it is the result of an accident, but an excellent painter can do a better job than factory paint...NO orange peel. I would think chipped up front end would de-value the car more than a fresh coat of paint.
Yep - for any reason. The TUV system that they have here is extreamely tough. Even brands and sizes of tires are on the car's registration - you can not deviate from what is approved for the car. This is one of the reasons that we can have some unlimited speed autobahns - strict regulation.
