I got out the M mobility kit and filled the tire with the "juice".

The repair kit makes more sense except the flat I had was from something sticking up on a rail road track and the hole it caused was too large to be repaired by a repair kit.

My daughter had used the car and buried the lug adapter to install spare.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Unlike previous 911s, the new 911 Carrera doesn't include a spare tire. Instead, drivers get a tire sealant and electrical compressor to patch a puncture and continue, albeit at 50 mph or less, to a repair station. Reasons for the change: It was difficult to find room inside the car to store a 19-inch tire, if a flat developed, and eliminating the spare reduced the car's weight by 22 pounds.

That really makes sense... there was a thread here a while ago where I stated the same thing... my C4 and my new C4S cab has the inflatable tire with the compressor. Every time I've had a flat I've had to call Porsche Roadside Assistance... why? Because there's no friggin place to put the flat... just made no sense whatsoever.
Kudos to Porsche.
Argh! As if the dinky spare wasn't bad enough...now you're SOL if you get a flat. But in case you're interested, you can pay extra (of course) for a tire pressure monitoring system.
Rob,
Happened to me...they 'tool kit' comes with a bag for the tire, and you have to put it in the back seat. Had the car been full or if someone was back there.......
My M5 came with an inflator kit and no spare. I have driven it 41k miles with no problems. BMW did a little research and found that on average drivers use their spare tire once every 70,000 miles. While that statistically supports the case for no spare, it doesn't do you much good if you get a flat in Possum Junction at 2am.

The full-size rear tires need to go inside the car on the 996.
For the price of a 997, you should get the tire monitor standard. It was even standard on my MINI!

No one seems to like Extended Mobility tires (i.e. run flats) but I had them in my 2002 C5 (not my 2003 Z06) and I loved them. Yes they were a little noisy but I also knew that if I was going 100 MPH and had a flat tire I could recover and come to safe stop with no problem. And then proceed to a GM dealer for repair. Along with the Run Flats the C5 had a great (and very accurate) tire pressure monitoring system. It was peace of mind and that is worth a lot in my book.
The new C6 will also have these Goodyear Extended Mobility tires that are supposed to be even better and quieter.
I think Porsche could have done better with the 997 than a can of fix-o-flat IMHO.
i've heard a lot of bad things about the ride quality of run-flat tires due to the increased sidewall thickness.
i had a flat in my C4 once, and i just put the flat tire inside of the car. there's a plastic bag in the tool kit to put the wheel in so you don't get the car dirty. if there's two people in the car, the wheel will even fit in the back seat, no problem.
You slice up a tire, or blow one to pieces and you are screwed.........and forced to drive on the flat to get the car to a safe place for the ramp truck to load the car. Is there anyother car in the world that is sold new without a spare? Dumb idea as far as I am concerned..............Like driving around with out insurance on the car, it is done, but not recommended.......
Now that you mention it gretch....most of those high-priced italians have no spares, just a can of fix-a-flat. But then again, they aren't really daily drivers... I'm with you...however rinky dinky, I still want a spare...
I had a rear flat on my TT and what a pain in the ****. My TT was too low to the ground to load on to a flat bed trailer without damaging the front lip and dragging the rear. The flat tire just made it even lower to the ground.
I put the spare on and then I had this huge rear wheel and no place to put it. Had to throw the rear in the Cayenne. The repair kit makes more sense except the flat I had was from something sticking up on a rail road track and the hole it caused was too large to be repaired by a repair kit.
I just inhereted the 1981 280ZX that we (my Dad) bought back in 1981. The car is absolutley perfect (still smells new, firm clutch, etc.). Well the car has only 60K miles on it and I don't ever remember having a flat growing up. Recently, I was driving the Z (yes I do drive cars other than my 996) and got a flat. I spent the better part of 15 mintues trying to find a spare. What did I eventually find? A cross between a spare and a can of inflator. Basically it is a small rim that has a collapseable tire on it that goes from "rim and thin stip of rubber" to monster 15 inch wheel that looks like it has about a 75 profile height tire on it. Absolutely amazing. This thing is about the size (actually much smaller) than the spare in the current 996.
What didn't Porsche think of this? It's actually perfect to get you to the next stop and get that flat fixed!
Actually, that's exactly what the 996 C4/C4S and Turbo cars have. Also, every 911 before the 996 came with a collapsible spare tire. A pain in the *** to use, but gets you going when in need.
Paul there already is one for 996s. As Viken said, the AWD cars already have one, along with a compressor. It saved my but when I blew out a tire this winter in NYC. Its not pretty, but it does the job...
I know, my car has a spare, but I'm referring to the type described by LVDell that he found in his 280ZX and what Viken says come standard with the 996 C4/C4S and Turbo cars. I guess it's called a 'collapsible spare'. I think I would prefer it to my current spare. Maybe not...
Does it mount inside the trunk the same way as in the regular coup (affixed to a long bolt)? The red wheel seems to be identical. I guess it's just the tire that is different.
I am not sure what brand of run flats they use on the vette, but a guy at work had the run flats on his little Lexus convertible and they were aweful. He put Pilot Sports on there and it made the care ride and hdnle much better.
The runflat tires on my MINI were junk, lasted all of 4500 miles and had the choppiest ride. New tires breathed life into the car and made the ride so much smoother. Given that there's no spare tire and I had the choice between runflats and no runflat I'd take no runflat and just carry my Triple A card with me.
And to those of you who are complaining that the tire pressure monitoring system should be standard because it tells you if you have a tire going down I have to wonder, have you ever driven a car with the tire going down? You can easily tell if there's a drop in pressure in one of the tires.
Had a blow out in my 3000 mi old tires as a result of low inflation.
My daughter had used the car and buried the lug adapter to install spare.
Had to call a AAA and they only paid the first $50 of the tow bill. Tow bill was $350 on a Sun. to the closest dealer. A mechanic was working on his own car (Camero Z), I threw him a twenty to use his tools to put my spare on.
The only good thing of the day was that the car tracked straight when it blew at 75.
My sob story....
My M5 had a flat. There was something big on the interstate that got about twenty folks, me being just one. I got out the M mobility kit and filled the tire with the "juice". The cut was on the sidewall and the "juice" just dribbled out. Had to call BMW (800 #) and they sent a no cost wrecker to get me. It was there in 20 minutes. Towed me (flat bed) to a dealer where I left the car until I could get a replacement tire. It was 70 miles to home so I had to get a ride late on a Sunday night. All in all.... it was a pain!!!
I'm not sure that a non mechanical person ( read wife, girlfriend, or non-mechanical person) is going to be able to work the system (if Porsche's is like BMW's) with ease. But then they probably wouldn't change a tire either!
I'd like a spare....even a skinny one!
Why?
How the hell did this thread get into politics? Why?
Do us all a favor - vote at the polls - not here on Rennlist. Save the political bull**** for another site.
This thread is closed - after I delete the pictures. I'm not sure why I should have to pay for the bandwidth of political debates - but maybe one of you, how has a far superior IQ - could enlighten me.....
