With the engine idleling in neutral wiggle or turn the wheel left and right about 2 inches in both directions (left and right), and try different hand placement or maybe use just your finger tips.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 2003 C2 with 8000 miles has what I never noticed until recently. With the engine idleling in neutral wiggle or turn the wheel left and right about 2 inches in both directions (left and right), and try different hand placement or maybe use just your finger tips. Do you feel any clicking feel or play ? I do, but what is really strange is that while I am doing this if I shut the engine off the play or clicking feel stops immediately. Why this concerns me is that I feel this play might take away from our legendary handling. I feel there is nothing worse that loosness or slop in steering Thank you all VERY much for checking this out for me

POST 3Original post

As soon as my car is back from the garage (Tuesday) I'll check it out. Will

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Will, I really appreciate that.

POST 5Original post

Does this always happen...because i noticed that when there is even just a small stone under the front tyre you can feel it in the steering wheel when you turn the wheel. Will try it out tomorrow. 2003 C2 8000 miles aswell :-)

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, Always Keyvan. If I quickly wiggle the steering wheel left and right there is an obvious bad feeling coming through the wheel and you can even feel it if your foot is depressing the brake pedal. My dealer felt it right away and said to watch it closely and let him know how it's going. I can feel it also while driving now on certain corners I am taking where there might be a bump or open crack in the road on the corner. But can not feel anything driving straight down the road or on gradual curves or turns. What is most interesting is that while I wiggle the steering wheel and turn off the engine at the same time the feeling or play or clicking feel stops immediately and the wheel firms up so to speak. It is really hard to put this into words that are understood clearly, hope you all do. Thanks

POST 7Original post

Geez, man, some of us have to wait til we get home to see our cars. I just tried this in the garage, and I didn't feel anything like you're describing.

POST 8Original post

There is no lag in my steering at all. No clicking, and no play.

POST 10Original post

The play in the steering wheel is at most 1 cm (less than 1/2 inch and that takes some force) with no clicking. Nothing changes when I turn off the ignition. Good luck.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks to all who have responded so far, I don't know what to make of it,all I know is that the play is there and it feels like s_ _t.

POST 12Original post

SYMA, No play in my steering wheel. However, the firm up feeling when turning off the ignition should be related to losing your power steering when powering down the car. Regarding the "click" on turning the steering wheel, you may have a faulty spring in the steering column. This may also give you a "grinding" sensation when turning the wheel.
