Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I just bought a 2002 911 C4 Cabriolet that has 500 miles on a new engine having been replaced for a RMS leak.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Porsche never resolved the issue, you got a new engine cause the old one had a non-concentric main shaft housing.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just bought a 2002 911 C4 Cabriolet that has 500 miles on a new engine having been replaced for a RMS leak. Does anyone know if the new engine (2004) is at risk for the same problem or has Porsche solved the issue? Thanks a ton. Kevin

POST 2Original post

Porsche never resolved the issue, you got a new engine cause the old one had a non-concentric main shaft housing. It can and may happen again....it is a design flaw with the engine. Its covered under the normal warranty...

POST 3Original post

My '04 Carrera developed a RMS leak a month ago at 7,000 miles (covered under warranty), so they have not solved it.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If you had to replace a 996 engine out of warranty, what do you think the average cost would be? Thanks Kevin

POST 5Original post

Yikes...its not something you want to do. 5-8k depending on who, what, where.... HOWEVER, typically, if the car has an RMS leak they test it, it fails new engine, it doesn't, no need for a new engine. So its not like in a few years you'll need a new engine. You may need a new seal eery few years, but that's like $600-$700. You have enough time left on your warranty that you'll be able to see if the engine will develop a new leak while you're still covered under warranty, and again, even if it does leak, it does mean you need ANOTHER engine, just a seal change....
