I noticed the workshop manual actually states that the vibration dampers should be replaced each time the pads are changed, a mighty expensive propostion, and one which the dealership must not be doing since they had to order the part for me.

Suggestion

Regarding the caliper "spiders", you really don't need them, but they do help keep your brakes quiet especially if you start running race pads.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When I was changing my track brake pads back to the street pads, I found that the clip that holds the vibration damper in one of the brake pistons had broken off on the left rear brake. This was a first for me, after many years of Porsche brake pad swaps. I ordered a replacement from Porsche (a whopping $14.44 with tax for what should be a 15 cent item!!!!) and put it in today. Considering there are FOUR of these in EACH rear caliper (the fronts each have 2 combo units which are undoubtedly even MORE expensive), I can't help but wonder how much of a difference these things actually make. Has anyone ever tried running without these dampers? I noticed the workshop manual actually states that the vibration dampers should be replaced each time the pads are changed, a mighty expensive propostion, and one which the dealership must not be doing since they had to order the part for me.

POST 2Original post

I recently installed a set of Pagid pads for a DE. The pads were slightly too thick to install with the anti rattle shims in place, so I removed them. After bedding in the Pagids, they were quiet. However, after a few days of street driving they began to squeal very loud at slow speeds as I came to a complete stop. It was just too load and annoying for me. I re-installed the stock pads WITHOUT any of the anti rattle pieces and the brakes are as quiet as they where when new. Try it without the shims. And you right, these things must be made from unobtainium to justify the ridiculous price porsche charges. Cheers,

POST 3Original post

Yeah you don't need the dampers. I have the Hawk pads and didn't replace the dampers with no issues whatsoever.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My track pads (Hawk HP Plus) DO squeal with street driving even with the dampers in place, which is why I switch back to street pads (Hawk HPS) between track events. So no noise issues with street driving without the dampers???? That would be GREAT news!! Scott

POST 5Original post

Without the spider dampers the brakes will eventually start to squeal so you might want to try something like Permatex Brake Quiet or the Loctite Disk Brake Quiet stick. I've had good luck with both.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I would be concerned that anything between the pistons and the pads would result in a spongey brake feel. And won't the high temperatures of track driving just melt away the Brake Quiet? Scott

POST 7Original post

I can't comment on the Brake Quiet... never used it. Regarding the caliper "spiders", you really don't need them, but they do help keep your brakes quiet especially if you start running race pads. Race pads are tougher to bed since you need to get them up to higher temps to establish a transfer layer on your rotor. Even with proper bedding, I think you'll find mixed results regarding race pad noise, with or without the spiders. Some folks don't have any noise issues while others get the image of a big fat yellow school bus everytime they mash the pedal. Proper bedding is key and I would run with the spiders... as long as the fit is not too tight with new pads or rotors. Cheers

POST 8Original post

You put a very thin film of either product on the back of each pad, similar in thickness to the adhesive that comes on the back of the Porsche dampers so you have no problems with pedal feel. No...

POST 9Original post

I don't install them but then again I can live with the school bus sqwueal.
