I keep the garage (somewhere between a 3 and 4 car garage, insulated walls/ceiling and insulated garage doors) at 45deg, melts all the snow off the vehicles (and keeps the Porsches who don't venture outside warm and dry) and use less than 100gal of propane per winter season.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

You guys in Cali/Florida, I know this doesnt pertain to you but your opinions are appreciated...LOL
Winter is upon us here in the Northeast and I have some project scheduled for January...my question is what type of heating are you guys using to heat up your sanctuary? I am thinking propane but would like something permanent as I can access a gas line.
Is there anything portable...I'm moving this summer so don't want to spend on a permanent solution. I don't need it all the time, mostly to work on my dirt bike...my P-Car can sit in the cold...she appreciate me more when I start her up...
I use a "milk can" propane heater. Heats up my 2 car garage in no time. I think I paid about $80 for it at Home Depot. Heat output is adjustible so it works out pretty well for me. I keep a spare 20lb propane tank for it as well.
I have a ceiling mounted, propane fired, Modine space heater in the garage with a low temperature (40deg) wall mounted thermostat. I bought the Modine from the local plumbing/heating supply house as a scratch and dent (got dropped while still in the box, dented the sheetmetal but who cares) back in the late 80's.

Just filled up the tank at $2.50/gal.
When I want to go out and wax the cars (what, is that so unusual in dead of the winter), I turn the thermostat up to 70 and within a half hour, it's T shirt time in the garage.
Much cheaper than electricity. My oil company is also my propane provider and they supplied the tank and installation for free, since I buy my oil/propane from them already.
Definitely one of the best things I did for the garage.
Here's a link to an example of my Modine heater (50K BTU propane):

Propane is far cheaper than electricity as Lewis has said.
I am having a similar propane heater (a Hot-Dawg 75, 75 000 btu) propane fired heater installed in my 27' x 27' x 9' garage next week.

My garage is pretty drafty so that is not an issue. I do have a CO detector mounted in the garage and it has never shown a high reading with the heater on.
I use a kerosene heater. Portable. I bought the unit when I was stationed in Japan. They have some awesome Kerosene heaters designed to fully burn fuel(kerosene). Heats up my 2 car garage fairly quick and it's electronicaly controled to maitain the set temp.
I am one of those Californians who lives in a cold winter climate. The nights get down in the teens, and on occasion will get down near zero. The four car garage gets down to below freezing even though it is insulated.
I was about to get one of those milk can heaters from Home Depot, but I am wondering if it needs to be ventilated in an enclosed garage?

works like a champ - 240v so you have to wire a receptacle in
our here gas is more than volts - but propane is cheaper
Thanx for the feedback, I think I am leaning more towards the propane route as I re-evaluate mounting a permanent fixture with a gas heater. Propane is also cheaper than electricity as stated.
Last weekend with temps in the single digits a couple of projects I really wanted to get done, I decided to bite the bullet and get a garage heater.
I ended up with a portable propane unit from home depot (similar to this one
http://www.mrheater.com/productdetai...id=790&cid=148
) that connects to a 20lb tank, and uses electricity to drive the fan/circulate the air. Mine is a 50-85k BTU unit. It was 29deg in the garage before I hooked it up in the 3 car garage. I propped the side door open 4-5 inches, and raised one of the garage doors 2-3 inches to get fresh air. Fired up the unit and it was about 50 deg within 30 minutes. Held between 50-55 deg all day even with outside temps in the teens.
I'm quite happy with it. It heats adequately, uses the same fuel as the grill and outdoor heater, and is small/light enough that its easy to store.
Hope this helps and good luck with your winter projects.
Mike
EDIT: Unit I bought at HomeDepot was $170 + tax. That does NOT include a propane tank.
Golly.....if it's not tough to bring a natural gas pipe into a wall of your garage......I'd sure recomend a simple wall heater....LP tanks are pain in the butt, need floor space, etc.
You can see mine in the back right of this pic. Simple to install. Safe as can be.
I can get up in the A.M. and flip this on low, and come back after breakfast to a warm garage. Takes up no space. Car can be parked with-in a couple feet of it and I run it no problem.
Good luck!
