Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Cleaned the MAF with carb cleaner and seemed to idle and rev a little smoother.

Suggestion

I do it that way when I replace the air filter instead of the "depress" and remove technique that Loren et al have suggested.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, I've tried every way I can think of to get the electrical connector off the MAF so I can remove it and clean it. Can someone tell me the secret to removing the connector? I looked at the instructions at Renntech.org and all it said was "squeeze the connector clips...". This did not work for me, either side to side or front to back. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

POST 2Original post

I ran into the same problem and since I have a tendency to break these damned plastic clips I canceled the whole thing for know. Any pics of where to press? Thorsten

POST 3Original post

To remove the cable you press the clips inward on each side of the connector where is connects to the intake housing. To remove the MAF itself you will need a Security Torx wrench as I described here .

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have the torx security wrench, but have had absolutely no luck in getting the connector off. I did squeeze what I think are the clips but no change in position of the connector. Is there a picture somewhere showing the clips you mention?

POST 5Original post

Try this link...scroll down to MAF removal. http://www.evoms.com/996%20Installat...structions.pdf

POST 6Original post

If it is not too tight then you might get it off with one hand (as in photo 1). If it is on tight then grab the other way (photo 2) and then pull with the other hand while squeezing.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I really appreciate your responses and they make a lot of sense, but my connector is REALLY connected! It even looks different than the ones in the photos you provided. My car is a 2001 996 C2 cab. Do you think the plastic may have hardened to the extent it no longer flexes and can be removed as normal? I am considering trying a set of pliers on it to improve the mechanical advantage (hesitant due to not wanting to break the connector).

POST 8Original post

Just unscrew the 2 security screws and remove the MAF that way. Unless you are replacing it you can leave it connected to the wiring connector. I do it that way when I replace the air filter instead of the "depress" and remove technique that Loren et al have suggested. I to could not get it to just slide out.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Finally got the electrical connector off the MAF. The release clip for my connector is on back, not the sides. Squeezing it front to back (on the release clip) and pulling up on the connector worked. Cleaned the MAF with carb cleaner and seemed to idle and rev a little smoother.
