Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anything to be concerned about? Water pump was replaced at 96k miles. Car has 138k miles on it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arCKz6lq028

POST 2Original post

Use a stethoscope or the old long screw driver held against the cheekbone to isolate the noise. But be careful around the belt and pulleys that are moving. Sounds like a pulley to me. Last week I replaced my alternator and all three pulleys on my car. The old metal pulleys were squeaking and rattling when spun by hand. All the new ones are 997 xxx xxx xx numbers and are nylon/plastic with center bearings.

POST 3Original post

I agree, kind of sounds like a squeeky idler pulley, but it's really impossible to tell from a video. Remove the serpentine belt and spin each pulley & accessory by hand (except the engine crankshaft). That should help you isolate the bad one. belt replacement DIY: http://www.renntech.org/forums/tutor...-polyrib-belt/ (login required)

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks all. Will do this next weekend.

POST 5Original post

My water pump failed last month, 12.5 years old, just 45,300 miles. The bearing went bad and it made a heck of a racket, banging like crazy. I refused to drive the car it sounded so bad.

POST 6Original post

JYO, did you replace with OEM water pump, or aftermarket? Sounds like pulley, but if WP, you've got 2 years warranty if genuine..if not, I've heard of those going in the timeframe you listed. Cheers, DS

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The replacement is OE with metal impeller. I changed it proactively with all new hoses around the engine when the motor was apart. The original water pump was fine at 96k miles

POST 8Original post

Did OE pumps come out with metal impellers ?? I thought that the "composit" plastic impellers were the default option. Just pray that the pump bearing hasn't failed & the metal impeller is eating its way into your crankcase..... After saying that, the sound clip is similar to when my idle roller bearing failed.
