Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I finally got around to changing my plugs in my 01 996. Took off bumper, heat shields, and mufflers. seemed daunting at first to do all this but afterwards i can't believe how easy it was! found one pop-rivet was loose on the driver side heat shield and reriveted, cleaned up underneath and buttoned her back up. Wasn't sure the condition of the tube O-rings or coil packs but now i do and i'm gonna do a complete renewal of all cause a few are not to my liking. Next is the front bumper to get at the radiators for good cleaning, then a good washing, clay bar/polish/waxing, and detail the inside. Just had to share.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

it was unbelievably easy, looking forward to having to get back in there! LOL

POST 4Original post

I don't see any plugs in any of the pix, are you sure you actually changed thme?! Did the tail lights prevented access to some of the plugs? I got a set of plugs ready to go in since the car has about 55K miles, maybe I'll change them out this winter.

POST 5Original post

Interesting, I'm due soon as well...plugs, tubes, o rings etc. How long did it take you?

POST 6Original post

Congrats! But why did you remove the bumper? You can still access them just by removing the mufflers. (Actually some have said you can do it even with the mufflers on but I wouldn't even try it!)

POST 7Original post

Nice work, good choice removing the mufflers. Yes I agree, removing the rear bumper is a bit excessive, but is also pretty simple to do.

POST 9Original post

I plan to tackle this as well. First I have to get a couple of socket extensions and a pair of *****.

POST 10Original post

That looks like alot of work to get the bumper cover off, nice job. I actually pulled my mufflers over the weekend and I kept hitting the heat shields for the spark plugs. I don't think I'll have any trouble getting them out next weekend with the bumper on.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8935691

nope but easier to remove bumper with them out of the way. Good opportunity to clean the body there too. Code: That looks like alot of work to get the bumper cover off, nice job. not at all a handful of screws and off it came. The bean bags were there so it wouldn't hit the ground. I had planned on doing it in the grass to prevent scuffing but early morning dew changed my mind and i wanted to get at it. A second pair of hands for reinstall made putting it back on simple. Code: I actually pulled my mufflers over the weekend and I kept hitting the heat shields for the spark plugs. check out the pic with heat shield off, straight away access is what i had with them removed. worked out great! Code: Congrats! But why did you remove the bumper? You can still access them just by removing the mufflers. If you look at the pic with the red circles, the bumper that the bumperettes mount too was loose. I guess someone was in there before and didn't properly tighten the bolts down i circled. While i was in there you can also see the circled pop rivet that i had to replace cause it was coming loose. Also the tucking of the heat shield as by my red line and arrow was wrong. All squared away and good opportunity to do some good cleaning inside and out with bumper off. Code: Interesting, I'm due soon as well...plugs, tubes, o rings etc. How long did it take you? @5 hours...........but that was with many coffee breaks, thorough inspection checking things out while in there, washing all parts removed, going back in house to look things up on the computer, my grand daughter wanting me to hold her for a while as soon as she came over, putting all my tools and crap away and the car parked back in the garage. Was a great day!!

POST 12Original post

Am I the only one that does this job without removing anything other than wheels, heat shield, and plugs? Good job on the DIY! S.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 8936550

How can you remove the heat shields without removing the mufflers? I can see how removing everything really makes the job much easier just because now you actually have room for your hands and tools. So when the time comes to do it again I may consider this as an option. tbanasiak - Makes sense, might as well address the other "while you were in there" issues while you can!

POST 14Original post

Good picture of the emergency engine lid cable. Is that the way you found it coiled? So sneaking a coat hanger under the rear light assembly should snag it. People have tried to expalain it's position, but seeing it this way is more helpful. Great Pic's Thanks

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 8936550

Nope, I do it almost the same way that you do, but I don't remove the wheels. Enyways, good job tbanasiak

POST 16Original post

I'm referring to the heat shield over the spark plugs, not the one wrapping along the bumper cover. I did it the first time without removing the wheels, but last time I replaced the spark plug tubes while I was at it and found the angle was better without the wheel.

POST 17Original post

Ah of course! I actually did the same thing a couple of weeks ago with the coils as I replaced them with everything still basically on the car.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8936813

That's the way I found it. For sure this can be done without removing everything I did but I had to address the loose bolt issue on the bumperette bracket so the bumper had to come off. Once it was off the rest was a simple why the heck not just remove them too...........too easy not to. Besides everything is spic-n-span inside and out now and yes I was curious how things looked under the bumper too. Bet I get it all off in 30 minutes or less now. Thanks for the cudos!

POST 19Original post

It's a great exercise to remove the bumpers, exhaust etc... Next time you know more than just doing spark plugs... The car is just very easy to work on.

POST 20Original post

The first time I did it by just removing the coil pack shields. It was a slow process. Next time, the mufflers came out, quicker. Last time, even faster was removing the bumper and muffler heat shields. Of course, all the effort to get the mufflers out, bumpers, and heat shields probably equals the time it takes to fiddle with wrenches and stuff... but doing all that stuff makes taking the spark plug part of it seem like a cakewalk.

POST 21Original post

At least the engine doesn't have to be partially dropped to change the rear plugs like the old Chevy Vega V6 did!

POST 22Original post

I drove my car onto a drive-on lift and replaced my plugs after removing only the mufflers. It took an entire afternoon though. That being said, removing the mufflers was a big pain and I would take the wheels off and use a chassis lift if I needed to do it again. I've had my muffler bypass pipes on since, which of course makes working under there much easier.
