The rebuild was done by a shop in Rancho Cordova, CA, and they used the LN engineering bearing upgrade, along with new seals all around.

Suggestion
All too often what is referred to as a "rebuild" is just a repair of failed components and a few gaskets to get a motor going again so it can be sold.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Going to look at a 2002 6 speed Carrera Cab, triple black, 108k on chassis - 11k on rebuilt bored over 3.8L (originally 3.6) M96 powerplant w/ JE pistons and updated IMS. Probably going to pony up for PPI tomorrow morning if car feels and looks good, and after inspection make my offer to owner on the spot.
Any idea of what an appropriate (ballpark) value for this car would be?
I'd like to see the receipts for the rebuild. All too often what is referred to as a "rebuild" is just a repair of failed components and a few gaskets to get a motor going again so it can be sold.
Is it the original motor or a doner that was installed?
Lots of questions.
Ok, I drove the car and found out more info.
The rebuild was done by a shop in Rancho Cordova, CA, and they used the LN engineering bearing upgrade, along with new seals all around. It was the car's own original motor. It pulls very hard, makes second feel like first.
The car is supposed to have a stock exhaust, but it doesn't sound very stock to me. Cosmetically, it's a good 8.5 out of 10, slightly better than my Boxster. Interior and top are both great. New clutch is super tight, but I can't stand the shifter feel after having a B&M in the Box - will probably change this out first. Also, the suspension feels really soft after the Boxster's M030, so I'll also be looking into changing that out. Even after upgrading it, I think I'll still have a deal as compared to an S model of similar capability.
I think I'm going to buy it, after I get the PPI done.
I have the same exact car, but color. My car is a 2002 Cab C4. It suffered the IMS and the case was sent out to L N and they updated everything. It had the 3.8 upgrade done. Its been around 12000 miles and I'll tell you it is a bat out of hell. Great upgrade. Burns a bit of oil, about 1 qt every 1200 miles. But from what I've read, its normal. The crazy thing is that it doesn't smoke much. I brought the car early this year. I paid $26,000. It had the hard top. 91,000 miles on the clock and 12,000 miles since rebuild.
I do hate the light weight alum. flywheel. Rattles bother me. So if I ever have to do the clutch, that will go. But I'll tell you, that this car is very nice. Pulls through every gear all the way and just loves to speed. You won't go wrong. Just make sure that the shop that does the rebuild is a great shop. The parts are great but the mechanic that puts it together has to know what he is doing. Good luck. Enjoy the 3.8.
