Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Do I have to ask them to check compression or is it included?
Leading evidence: 'Check compression or is it included' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check compression or is it included' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've lusted after the 996 (esp the 4s) for years now and it's finally a possibility with their age and this crappy economy. I've read the buyer's guide and found it very helpful but have a few questions.
1. I'm in CA and have no problem buying anywhere in the US. Is there any emission issue for bringing a car into CA? Any extra fees?
2. I'd love to get a manual but with LA traffic I'm contemplating the tiptronic. What kind of life span do they have? 75K? 150K?
3. There seems to be a sizable price difference between a base c2 and a c4s. I've seen 99 and 2000 c2 selling for 20-25K with 50-60K mileage but 2002-4 c4s are almost always 40-45K for the same mileage. Is the idea of a 30K 2002 c4S just VERY unlikely?
4. I've come across a couple of cars on autotrader that seem like good deals (links below) but are they "too good to be true"? Is there anything specific or fishy to look out for with these cars? Or things to ask the owners? Mileage seems reasonable. The 2005 C4s seems esp. amazing.

Thanks for any advice!
They both seem like good deals at first glance...the 05 is just an S, not a C4S...regardless, any P car that you are looking into buying...get a PPI...good luck
Yeah, that email comment seemed a little fishy plus 35K for a 2005? How much does a PP inspection usually run? Do I have to ask them to check compression or is it included?
One more question:
If a Porsche is sold used without a warranty can I get a Porsche one added to it or perhaps a third party one?
Thanks!
You can only get a Porsche CPO warranty for a car purchsed from a Porsche dealer (at the time of original sale). Yes you can buy a third party warranty. Getting either also depends on the year and mileage.
Those prices seem to be too good to be true...what isn't being revealed ?(accidents,no engine etc.)Always get a PPI to verify condition etc.Do they have records that are complete? GL
pkts, no problems bringing the car into CA. I brought my car into the state after I purchased it and all I had to do was smog and registration (getting the title was not cheap-around $600). My tranny has 94K on it and the Tip still works perfect. I'm selling my '99 now with a new factory motor; if you want to drive it and see what a 996 with a Tip feels like let me know. No worries. Kent
How would you like to wake up one morning and see your car for sale online in the auto-trader? The price is the first red flag and the contact info is the 2nd. I didn't know you could get auto-trader email.
PM me if you're seriously in the market for a C4S. My '02 is for sale and listed in the Classifieds.
less than 23k miles, under CPO warranty through May 09 and within your price range.

Thinking about selling my 03 996 C2 seal grey Tip. Has about 75k miles and 100k CPO warranty till the end of Feb 2009. Not sure how much its worth. But am contemplating a Pleasureway motorhome right now. Lemme know.
Wow, what a great forum. Thanks for all the replies! Ok, so I guess if I buy from out of state I need to account for 600 for title plus another hundred for smog check. I kind of have my heart set on the C4S unless I can get an amazing deal on a C2 or C2s. Can a CPO warranty be extended past 6 years? Is it even worth the cost to do that? Thanks Kent for the kind offer!
