There are still too many good 996's on available to repair the donor car and try to sell it with a salvage title.

I am considering buying a third 996 with a bad motor and installing donor car's motor along with using misc parts that are better in donor than third car's.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Received my September Panorama yesterday and of course I went to the Mart to review cars for sale, an interesting observation there are nine 996 cars for sale everyone is a cabriolet not one coupe listed. OK did aliens land and grab all the coupes? Rich

POST 2Original post

Nearly half of all M96 powered 996s produced are Cabs, so there are alot of them. Never owned a 996 Cab so I can't speak for why a larger number of them are for sale versus coupes. But I can happily say as a 996.2 Coupe owner for 24 years, I don't know why anyone would ever sell one.

Yes I noticed that too, I get Panorama as well and love scanning the classifieds in the back. I think its just a supply and demand thing. Coupes are generally in higher demand than cabrios and maybe people tend to keep their coupes longer so they come up for sale less frequently. The old saying "When the top goes down, the price goes up" just never seems to apply in real life. Of all the cars Ive ever been in to, if they came in a convertible version, they were always cheaper and more plentiful, so Ive always wondered, what car were they talking about when they said that?

Is that world wide? or US sold?

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 20720445

World wide. Percentage wise, the US may have more cabs.

I think that saying the top goes down prices go up was applicable for the 1950s,60s and 70s cars I remember buying my E type Jaguar coupe for a bunch less than the cabriolet, dont think it applies to more modern European cars like Porsche, coupes bring the money. I have owned a few 996 cabs over the years and found them fun especially with a six speed not much of a driving difference from my coupes. I also liked the unique look of the cabs with the factory hardtop not everyone likes that look but I just like the style, go figure 😀 Rich

Yeah I actually initially set out to buy a convertible, partially because thats what my daughters really wanted me to get, and I really like open-air driving. But I found a cheap manual coupe in a good color combo and just couldnt resist.

POST 8Original post

My take is the coupes are selling fast enough that an advertisement in Panorama, which takes a while compared to alternatives, isn't needed.

POST 9Original post

Yes, and look at the numbers for C4S. Very few cabs, most are coupes. Only 24% cabs. Sounds good to me. I have C4S coupe. I would never consider a cab because a 20+ year old car (cab) is "likely" to have expensive top-problems that a coupe will not have. After all, 20+ year old car will have enough problems already. JMO. YMMV

POST 11Original post

I prefer coupes. I don’t like driving convertibles. I don’t even like an open sunroof. The few times I’ve ridden in a convertible I hated the experiences. I wouldn’t mind a Boxster, but the top would always be up.

POST 12Original post

Maybe after 30 years the convertible tops are now finicky, out of sycn, does not work, bent, or overall coming to total replacement so the owners decide to move on...?

POST 13Original post

Having owned both a 996.2 C4S coupe and convertible - I prefer the convertible. I live in Florida which probably has something to do with it, but, being able to hear the unfiltered engine is quite intoxicating.

Driving top down in the fall when the trees change colors or late at night through an open country road, can't beat that.

POST 15Original post

I think rising prices of the 996 are contributing to the new market for Cabs, prices of all 996s have gone up, those folks with cabs realizing an opportunity to get ok money for their cabs, imo coupe owners are holding for the next increase in value.. within 5 years the good coupes will be 50k plus maybe more..

I completely believe the trend of prices in the 996 is upward, especially with the aftermarket support and affordability. Everyone, young and old loves the 911. Heck, even the local sheriff deputy stopped by one of our drives in his patrol rig to tell us he's dreaming of the day he owns a 911. I bought a totaled 1999 to be the donor car for my Tip to manual conversion. I am mulling what to do with the leftover donor car? The crash was low speed, just enough to pop the airbags. It has an excellent motor with the LN IMS bearing kit and my indy has worked on it for years. There are still too many good 996's on available to repair the donor car and try to sell it with a salvage title. I am considering buying a third 996 with a bad motor and installing donor car's motor along with using misc parts that are better in donor than third car's. My indy's favorite drive in his stable of 9 pcars is his 996. All of the work serious work would be done by him, so we'd have the cachet of "work by done someone highly regarded" in the area Porsche community. This thing will be well sorted when we're done. Or, do I just sell the donor motor and part the rest out and haul off the carcass to the recycling yard? My wife loved the donor car purchase idea but haven't started the warm up process to support the idea that we need a *third* 996, of which only one works. lol

first of all Calm down lol no rush maybe pull the engine as you have to anyway.. then strip all possible useful parts from the shell.. if you have storage keep lots of stuff even hood doors trunk lid spoiler .. windows interior if its any good, I. The meantime look for a really good car with bad motor, personally Id look for something other than a stock 996, something with good or unusual options or color, then park it until your car is finished .. dispose of the shell and then onto the next project, once you have your bad engine 996 you can sell the parts you have kept that are not needed, however selling parts is not for the feint of heart, shipping big parts can be a challenge the first couple of times.. good luck..

If you decide to scrap the shell, let me know. I have been thinking about seeking out a 911 body for an art project.
