POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've had my black 01 996 for 6 years now, and I also have a 16 year old black Mercedes E class from my college days. Two German cars being at the two extreme end made it a good combo over the years. P-car being at the end of the exotic sports car, and the other an old German sedan that has a code name W124. Got rid of the Vette after 1 year of joy-riding. I am thinking about trading both cars into just one car, that is something practical. 996 has always put a smile on me when taking it out for a night on the town or on the weekends. Don't like driving it wearing a suit, though. On occasions where I go to a business meeting, a nice big sedan or an SUV would be my preference over the P-car. I wanted something sporty, fast, roomy (i'm 6'2"), and yet a little docile and easier on the rough road. Test drove the BMW 650, the new Jag XK, which by the way the rear seats are completely unusable. More and more I think about getting rid of the 996 for a common name BMW, I am having second thoughts, and also considered getting a 997 while keeping the Benz. I need that sedan as a long commuter if I get another two-seater. Has anyone had similar dilemma?

POST 2Original post

I've had a 1978 911 for the last ten years which I slowly but surely transformed into a track/X car. I daily drove it for the first 2 or 3 years, but kept a second car for the remaining seven. The second car started off being a winter beater, but over the years, the second car got nicer until last year I was driving a new (but very pedestrian) subaru about 95% of the time, and my 911 less and less. Got to the point where I gave my head a shake, sold both cars, and bought a 2002 996, which I truly intend to daily drive as my only car. It's only been 4 months, but so far so good. I've bought a set of 17 inch wheels which I will shod with Blizzaks for the winter. We'll see how I feel about keeping the 996 as my only daily driver. Truth is, I want a GT3 but can't see daily driving that, so I expect I'll end up with two cars again at some point. The plan is to get into a company car by then though. Similar to your situation - not really but kind of I guess. My problem is I like the Porsches so much that I can't really see myself not owning one.

POST 6Original post

I bought my 996 cab as a weekend toy. This summer I sold my Infiniti M35 and began the search for my e39 M5. As I searched, the 996 became my everyday car. I found the M5, and now that I have it I find that I'm driving the 996 more than I ever did before. It really is a great car. The month+ of being my daily driver really made me appreciate it. I don't like the low seat, which makes it difficult to get out of, the small trunk and the stiff ride on bad roads. I personally think it would last about 5 months as my everyday car before I broke down and bought something more practical and comfortable. Having had two Jags, I am not a fan anymore. On my 12th BMW, I am obviously a fan, although I'm not all that taken with the new 6. Find a nice 5 series along with the 911 and you'll be set. That's my advice. Michael

POST 7Original post

My 996 is my only car. I've had it since May '06, and I've put 35000 miles on it in that time. In all that time, I think I've had to borrow my girlfriend's Civic twice to transport bigger objects (including my rollbar). My advice is to go with the 997, and reckon on spending $100-200 a year on rental cars when you absolutely need a bigger trunk. Also, from what I hear, a 997 with PASM is a very comfortable commuter.

POST 13Original post

In '99 I bought an Audi A6 as my business car when I also had a son living at home who was 6'3", 260#'s--so a large back seat was important. We were doing a lot of renovations on the house, so I later got an '02 Ranger to haul dirt, gravel, building materials, etc. Fast forward, son moved on to his Life. Since '99, while there were times I did appreciate the large trunk in the Audi, the days of taking business clients to lunch have largely passed. So, the back seats have never been used for business clients. If the suspension is not too stiff for your roads, the 996/997 are extremely capable and livable everyday cars--the days of continuing problems with rust, heater boxes, chain tensioners, etc., are long gone. A 996/997 will also tend to put a smile on your face every time you go somewhere. Given the pressures of work, this is not a bad thing. Last year, I sold the Audi and my '05 BMW motorcycle and got a 996 (kept the Ranger). Am happy to rent a car on the once or twice a year occasions when I want a car with a back seat. I would worry less about putting on mileage if you want to keep the car and really use it. It might be more of an issue if you want a new one every couple of years. Most people don't really understand the differences among the P-cars since they tend to look alike. So, as long as it is dependable, a Porsche is relatively timeless and will never look like "some old car you drove up in." My Dad was 6'6" and came from an era when men wore hats. There were few cars he could fit in at all. Porsches were the only sports cars that he could ever fit in and actually feel comfortable. (Still couldn't wear his hat, though.)

I was at an event last night at a local dealer to ogle the RS Spyder, and got into a conversation on this very subject with a couple of owners, a sales rep and a tech. Hearty agreement that these cars are a lot less trouble if they're driven all the time. Conversation started because the sales guy had stopped driving his Boxster every day since moving nearer to work. Apparently, the car had been bulletproof for years, and then - almost as if to punish him - when it was mostly parked, it was one thing after another.

POST 17Original post

I put every single mile on my 996. I have put over 15k in 07 alone. Wifey has a suv, but anytime we go somewhere together we take the Porsche. I even throw the little one in the back to run to the store. My 996 is a grocery getter!

POST 19Original post

guess i was wrong! in anycase, when mine was my daily driver, i did 40,000 miles in 18 months, if that counts for anything... but eventually the thrill of the track made it so that driving it on the street was much less enjoyable. more power to those with high mileage 996's - gives me comfort to know that mine isn't going to be going away anytime soon.

My MY00 C2 is my DD. It has just over 50,000 miles now. I put the last 16K or so. I don't see a need to have a different car at my point in life. If I was hauling big wigs around, I might get sometihng more mundane. But, I did get the wife a sedan... And, I think it's ok with just the rear end lifted. Oops, wrong thread -td

POST 23Original post

My '99 C4 is my daily driver 4 seasons a year too. I bought the car about 2 years ago with 12K on the clock and now it's got just over 28. I commute just over 30 miles each way to work and commute with someone so I keep the miles down by driving every other day. Some days I wonder when I'm in stop and go traffic on Rt 80 if I need my head examined, but as soon as I get on a seconday road and get a bit of freedom it becomes worthwhile. I had an S4 that was stolen and I bought an Acura TL but it was too much like driving my sofa so I sold it and bought the 996. I used to do lots of track stuff from DEs to IMSA to SCCA open wheel and driving it reminds me of competetion driving witout having to put the time and money into it. I've looked to get something more civilized to commute in but when I look at what is out there for what I could get for my car, I'm not in any hurry. I like the feel of the 996 as a daily driver much better than anything else out there, best bang for the buck for a daily driver. Bruce

POST 24Original post

both the 996 and 997 make perfectly fine DD's, although the 997's interior is a lot nicer place to be. conversely, for a DD, i much prefer the drive of a 996 with 18" wheels than my CS2 with 19's. the real issues though are: (1) whether you have the types of clients who may not mind you driving them in a 911; and (2) you can only drive 1 person/client around at a time. in my experience, i dread having a last-minute business meetings when i've driven my porsche to work (among the various reasons, it affects your bargaining position since they think your company is loaded). also, in my experience, whenever i have some client function, it's more than one person. so, in that case, you're gonna have to have them drive you in their rental-- not so cool. that all being said, i think the best car for clients (not too big or flashy but shows 'restrained' success) is a bmw 5 series. imho.

Went to Palm Spring in So. Cal with a girl the other day. My 996 ran out of room putting in all the stuff we bought. Sometimes, I have hard time finding space in the 996 after a visit to a local grocery store. It is worse with a passenger. So how do you guys do that, having it as the only car? I'm sure most who have the P car as the only car is no married, just like me. All my girls hate the ride on the P. They admire the looks and wanted a ride in it, but they don't like to ride in it anymore. I let one of the girls drove it once, and she fell in love ha ha. How many guys having the P car as the only car is single?

I've occasionally heard others express this opinion. I cannot understand it. My 00 996 has been my daily driver since I bought it. The 928 was for 11 years prior to that. For long periods I had a 70 mile daily commute (in a business suit) , and for many years I drove it to the company parking lot in a double breasted uniform. Never had a complaint. I could not have justifed the expense it were to be only a sunny day toy. One of my buds has a Vette. He was shocked that I drove to and left the 996 in the company lot for 2-3 days at a time. I was just as shocked that he could be attracted to, and pay for such a great car .... then leave it at home in the garage. One of my greatest P car pleasures was to come home from a long trip, get off the employee bus, and know that beautiful Cab was waiting for me to drop the top and drive it home.

POST 33Original post

Drive mine every day now (the past 6 months). It is actually driving better. I can fit upto two bags of mulch in the front. Plenty of room for groceries and even a mid size ice cooler up front. Not including the front passenger seat, you can use the front, the back seats, and the hatch for purchased items. When loading in the front, but heaviest things on the bottom, and work your way up. My only complaint is drycleaning. Hard to get in the car without wrinkling. That is why I wish that the hatch opened like the targa. Best solution on drycleanig is to pick it up, double it over, put it in the front, and then go immediately home. Turns out ok. I like the fact that it only holds one passenger (comfortably) but more in a pinch. During lunch with my partners, they never ask to take my car. There is a negative conotation with a 911. But my parents, older partners, basically anyone in a paternalistic relationship with me, turns their nose up at the car. Why did you buy it, it is not practical, too flashy, ........ None of thier business unless they want to make the payments is my response. BTW- I am 39 but look young (still get carded at times). As to my parents, I will remark on the 100k rug, or 20k shot gun just purchased, or other things which I do not appreciate. Moral of the story, we all have our guilty pleasures, but at least you can use the 911 as daily transportation. It is also pretty good on gas. Runs me about 40 to fill it up with premium, and averages about 19mpg or close to 280 miles per tank full in the city. Wife initially had a problem with it, but let her drive it a few times, she came to my side of the table. Now a mercedes or bmw would be easier to own, but you will never quite get use to driving a porsche. It is a new experience everytime I turn the key, and I have had it 3 years next month.

POST 34Original post

Targa really is ideal for a daily driver, particularly if it is your only car.

Hmmm... maybe we need Rennlist hats. I would have said hi, and then you would have known that I'm not the horned devil some here have accused me of being. In fact, that wasn't the race car, apparently. It was a 'show' car. I think the chassis was the real deal, but the DFC guys said the engine was a dummy. Was a totally fun evening, though. i think my concern wasn't explained well at the beginning. what i meant was that i get such a thrill driving my 996 at the track that i would much rather conserve its use for that than for the daily (mundane?) activities of driving in the city. i wouldn't have a problem driving it all the time except for those times when you're stuck in rush hour traffic...

POST 38Original post

My '86 cab was my only car for a little over 4 years (sept 2002-2007 ish). Occasionally, I found myself riding my bicycle to autozone for a tool or something when I was performing maintenance or say, dropping the engine to fix a leak. I wouldn't recommend that if you don't have a backup car. BUT, it was reliable other than the oil leak. What finally broke my back was the rising cost and rarity of R12...I lost the A/C battle. I finally buckled and got a gas miser with a killer a/c and no chance of leaking in the rain. I'm currently trying to decide whether to sell them both and get a new Porsche as my sole car. I don't think there's anything wrong with them as a daily driver. They're so freakin fun, and anything else is, well, just a car.

POST 39Original post

My 996 is my only car, and I wouldn't be caught dead in any sedan, SUV, etc, etc. For me, the car fits like a glove (I'm 6'3") and has the driver involvement I crave, along with decent power & amenities. The only thing I'd trade up for is a 997 GT3 or 997S w/X51. Guess I'm just a dyed-in-the-woool 911 guy.

I have kept an older Lexus LS as a winter driver for the last 5 years. However, since I bought the 996 Cab 1.5 years ago I have only driven the Lexus about 2,000 miles. I have snows and a hardtop for the 996 and intend to drive it all winter, and will sell the Lexus when I get to it. There are many threads discussing this, but I am of the opinion that you might as well drive these cars - you only live once! You can't take it with you, they are meant to be driven, etc. (I have a million of these rationalizations...). If you need a big car occasionally, rent one!
