Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It only takes 4 extra hand-tightened bolts since you took the time to remove the airbox anyway.

The main problems with re-useable filters is that some people over oil them when cleaning which causes the cells or MAF damage.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

OK so I was doing the throttle body cleaning as per another thread, thanks Orient Express BTW, and when I removed the air box top I saw this. I know this is a K&N filter and because this is my first time working on the engine side of things on the car I was unaware that it had it.
So is this the filter that people say, don't use?
If it is, then I will go get a factory element ASAP, even though my car has not thrown any codes.
Thanks in advance for all replies
Most of the concern is around the CAI filters, in particular the K&N. This is a drop in K&N element. Personally I wouldn't be worried about it, but some people are more conservative than I am.
Are you sure its a K&N. BMC makes a panel filter as well for the 996. One way or the other I would not worry with the panel filter. The main problems with re-useable filters is that some people over oil them when cleaning which causes the cells or MAF damage. BTW if the filter is a BMC you have an expensive part.
Make sure you remove the throttle body itself too so you can thorough clean it front and rear. It only takes 4 extra hand-tightened bolts since you took the time to remove the airbox anyway.
Damn, I already put it back together, driving it tomorrow for the first time this week. So I will have to revisit the thorough cleaning another day.
Is there a gasket between the throttle body and intake?
I've got the same unit - good stuff (I wanted to go with the CAI, but was warned off it by the 24,567 threads saying how it casues CELs, cellulite and global warming)
