Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

How feasible is it do maintenance on or modifications to these cars? I actually enjoy working on cars, you get to know and appreciate them better. I often do a better job than most mechanics (at least on my current fleet of cars). Looking at the engine bay of the 996, things seem awfully cramped. Is most work performed from the bottom (e.g., changing sparkplugs), or do most jobs require the engine and transaxle to be pulled? How hard is that? What about other typical maintenance items: fluid changes (oils, coolant -- I know it's supposedly life time), replacing belts, pumps, alternator, vacuum hoses and coolant hoses? What are the typical wear items? What about suspension work? Thanks, Jan

POST 2Original post

Most of the items mentioned are fairly straight forward projects on the 996. You may want to find a set of service manuals if they are still available from Porsche. The manuals are well worth the cost, at least when I bought them, I heard they have marked the price up dramatically on them recently.

POST 3Original post

you can also subscribe to alldatadiy.com for 20~30bucks/year. i hear the service manuals have been on backorder for at least a year now. at least with alldatadiy you have the info you need now. it helped me on my spring install. it looks like they have permission to use the factory diagrams, tsb info, trouble codes, etc...

POST 4Original post

I think that most items are quite feasible to maintain yourself. I have similar interests to maintain my own 99 C4. Although I have not required much special maintenance I have found the normal maintenance quite manageable, i.e. Spark Plugs, filters, light bulbs, Oil.... I did buy a set of Porsche Shop manuals (I think I got them from MY-Porsche.com) and I have an ODB-2 code reader. The manuals are really good, but they arrived separate from the books and where a bit tricky/tedious to assemble correctly. There is a lot of technology in this vehicle and having the manuals is essential. So far I have followed the maintenance schedules and I have not had too many things to repair. I did take apart the Passenger door latch when a pin fell out, I did take apart the sunroof control panel to tap into the power circuit for my radar detector, and I am still chasing a rattle that I think is in the sunroof. It's still nuts and bolts, but a lot of electronics too.

POST 5Original post

Check out Loren web page he has some DIY instructions. Also most of the work on the car is pretty straight forwards. If you ever worked on other cars with strut type of suspension its almost all the same. I done lowering on a 996. If you have questions e-mail me [email removed]
