I'll certainly use them at the track, but most of the time they will just be used a regular old summer wheels/tire.

I have put about another 10k in mods and changes since I got last year.

So I will take the performance hit of running bit 19x12, 315/25/19s in the rear for the absolute aggressive beauty it lends to public roads full of utility/commuter cars including your boring stock 911s all around town.

You jus gotta have seen it yourself with your own eyes exactly how big of a visual diff it makes and in my eyes, there's no substitute for running deep dish 19x11 (narrowbody) or 19x12 (widebody) lowered style on the streets.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I know that there are several people on this list that have 11" rear wheels on the back of their 996's. Just wondering what kind of observations you've had with them. I'm seriously considering them (18"). I have a '99 C2. So, roughly 300hp. I also have an MK1 aero kit, which causes a little extra drag. Still feels like a rocket to me.....
Does the 300hp 996 have enough grunt to deal with these wheels? I know there's always a trade off, but I don't want to adversely affect my acceleration and aerodynamics too badly. They also weigh a little more (not too much, about 6lbs more per wheel than a 10" Carrera lightweight 5 spoke, WITH tires mounted), the tires cost more as well.
But- the thought of 11's going around a corner is a nice one. They look pretty wicked, too.....
I'll certainly use them at the track, but most of the time they will just be used a regular old summer wheels/tire. Won't be in the rain much with them. I know they would lose against a 10" there.
I've been wrestling with the wheel+tire combo since I've had my car (2+ months), as I feel it is one of the most critical decisions to be made with it. Tires seems to be a no-brainer, looks like the PS2 is well loved on here.
Anyway- those of you who have had both 10"er's and 11"s- what did you think? Worth it?

on the street you won't even stress the traction of the 10s w/ decent tires. On the track, the 11's would be a consideration only after a really decent susp upgrade and alignment and after you are running sticky r compounds. Otherwise it is for looks only and then get what you you think looks best.
+1...not to mention that if you're not running 8.5' or 9' fronts you're only going to make the car understeer more than it does now which would be worse for the track.
If you want them for the bling then by all means go for it, but they're not really a performance upgrade if you're just doing 11' rears and not going up in front wheel size at the same time...AND 6lbs per corner weight difference is pretty big since it's rotating, unsprung mass.
There is certainly dimishing returns on larger sizes and weights for track application with all other components on the car remaining static. My vote is stick with 10s for the track and feel free to go bling steamrollers for the street.
save your money and keep the 10's. btw i think your 3.4 ltr in that model year is rated by porsche at 295 hp. only the 01 did i see porsche rate the 3.4 at 300 hp.
Not a 996 but here's one that we did - 19X8.5 and 19X11. The extra 1/2" and 1" makes a lot of difference in the way the car looks even when you have to stay with stock tires. The wheel(19X11) weighs in at 21.5Lbs compare to the stock Turbo wheel(19X10) at 30.3Lbs. Bigger does not always translate to being heavier. The 3 piece full forged 6061 aluminum wheels are also JAWA and TUV certified.
I've got 8.5 x 18 fronts and 11.0 x 18 rears on my '02 996 C2.
I absolutely love 'em. A have them on Champion RG5 wheels that only weigh 19.2 lbs in the front and 19.9 lbs in the rear so I actually reduced my overall unsprung weight (vs. stock) even with bigger tires.
A win/win in my book.
This is in essence of very personal decision you're making with your 911.
For me, so long as it's in a ballpark acceptable range of wheel weight relative to sizing, I'm cool.
So I will take the performance hit of running bit 19x12, 315/25/19s in the rear for the absolute aggressive beauty it lends to public roads full of utility/commuter cars including your boring stock 911s all around town.
The meat you see in the back with that polished lip filled out to the edges of the fenders (no rubbing of course since fitment is perfect), is absolutely stunning and unless you guys can see back to back on the same road, one car passing by on stock wheels... another lowered on 18s, another lowered on 19s, another not lowered on 19s, another not lowered on 19s... on the 996... you just won't be able to fully appreciate it via posting cute, static 2-d pics of it online.

Sure, it won't feel as lithe as one running lightweight wheels like Ray S, but again Ray's setup isn't nearly as good looking as my setup.
(u know I love you Ray)
Here's a very nice mk1 lowered on 19" champion RG5s
it's like trying to share with someone how an exhaust sounds via txt message. you just gotta see it in person to really "get it".
Well said and could not agree more, Benjamin. The 3D effects cannot be fully appreciated without actually seeing them in person.
Here's a couple of pics from a narrow body with 19X8.5 and 19X11. Again the dealership wanted to stay with stock tires but the effects is more noticeable due to the narrow body. Lowering the car by about 1" would also make a huge difference.
that thing DEFINITELY needs to be lowered. it looks horrible sitting up so high. and would look 1000000x better than any stock setup lowered. i like that the centers are brushed and not chrome/polished. save that junk for the muscle car crowd.
Yes, I would be running an 8.5" in the front. Sounds like most believe not much, in any, performance upgrade with the 11"/8.5" combo. I have no suspension upgrades yet, pretty bone stock. Maybe I'll just get the 10"/8" combo, it's a little lighter, cheaper and the tires are cheaper. But- I also have to agree with the "looks" posts, the 11" is pretty damn wicked......might be worth it.........well back to square one..........
Mitch
just know that a honda s2000 can fit 10" rears all day everyday. do u really want to run tires as narrow as a freaqin HONDA???? as a lowly M3? nawwwwww dude
go wide or go home baby boy
i have 315/25s on 19x11s, stance is great, but if i were at all concerned with tracking it I'd be on 17 or 18" lightweights on sticky ickies. If you're going to spend money on anything wheel tire related for trackday purposes, it should be the tires. More advanced, stickier tires are going to give you way more of an edge than any additional width will, of course you could do both!
anyway, I feel that on the road, the 9s upfront and 11s out back are very smooth looking (and riding), more stable in higher speed sweepers and on freeways, and feel very, for lack of a better word, "planted", but I'm not certain what an instrumented test or even a stopwatch would say about dragging them around a track.
+1 on LowStro9 amazing stance with those huge rear tires & Gembella wing. Actually I did see LowStro9's car life cruising on 75 in DFW area one night, I immedaitely knew I saw this car before on RL
Very cool look...
i'm in dallas on tuesday (but my porsche isn't).
Question for LowStro: what's overall width (body) back there? I've seen strosek wideboy 996s before, but none that ever fit 14.5"! love it.
Phat ***
Personally I prefer good and wide, as in 11 inches. Takes a real man to handle 14+
Not to take anything away from lowstro's stunning example of a 996
The common reaction is as you would expect. It generates a lot more conversations than I care to be a part of on some days.
Quite honestly, I am a semi laid back guy and would not have gone as baller or with the stereotypical red, but the amount of work put into her was too hard to pass up. I am more sutied to the "blackedout" type than the blingish but the car is amazing up close. I actualy got to see from the other sides point of view while swapping keys with him.
I was told the PO was a ball player. He took the car did a frame off color change and put about 100k in the car in mods. I have put about another 10k in mods and changes since I got last year. I have rebuilt a large part of the audio system, added a roll bar, nav and a slew of other things. Out of everything obvious and visible, the better of the other hidden secrets is the JRC Cup Car suspension. It is amazingly smooth and subtle on the highway but takes a corner like you would not believe and has turn-in for days.
This reminds me of when I put wider tires on my RX7, and then realized
my 5th gear had lower top end speed than my 4th gear
I wouldn't do it just for posing. I like form, but followed by (better) function- not worse function.
