what's weird is the 5 series, the refreshed ones, have LED turn signals and stationary red running lights, but for some stupid reason the red light when braking is incandescent.

Yea, I'm well familiar with the brute power the TT can put down (I think all the Rennlisters are), but even with the additional benefits/refinements and power in the 997TT (superior to the 996TT), I found myself underwhelmed by the end of the test drive.

The use of the term can be dependent on the era: a vehicle that may have been considered a supercar at one time may not retain its superiority indefinitely.[citation needed] The term supercar may refer to factory-built, street-legal sports cars.[3] Some supercars include some of the features required for race cars, like the roll cage, [4] while other supercars are in general race cars with only the minimum legal required modifications made (e.g.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Ben, with the ease and moderate cost of mods for these cars, there's really nothing like 'em. Hang over at The Six, Turbo section for a while if you want to be sold on 996TT.
You can buy one right now for $55 to $60k, spend about $3 to $4k and be up past 500hp 500tq. Or spend around an extra $25k and be up around 700hp/tq. These cars are made and the engine is designed to handle this kind of power.

I'm more about finesse than crazy hp/tq potential. I don't like lag either and I do ultimately prefer RWD. I think it'll either be a 997GT3 type car in the 911 line-up or an F-car for me as the next ride.
Cool article, though. I like reading up on car stuff like that. It's pretty much all I do on the net.
If you were to drive a GT700 (which can be had for under $70k), I'd be shocked and probably would find it hard to believe. Truth is, a 700HP 996tt is about finesse AND brute power, best of all worlds...and a great daily driver too. Oh, and you won't feel any lag in one.
FYU you can get a 01/02 996TT 6sp with 45-60k miles in the low/mid $50s and a tip in the high $40s... that has to be the ultimate bargain in supercars..
Great article in the May Excellence issue about transforming the stock 997 Turbo to a Werks K1. The complete package is big bucks, but the suspension tweaks were in line price wise, which improved the handling to GT3 levels.Good article to see how they removed the lag and made the handling much sharper.
1) Don't want my 911 to be my daily driver
2) I already have a 996 car that visually looks better than 99% of the 996s in the world (HEHE)
3) I don't want/need more power - finesse and lighter weight are more important and I realized this when I drove the modified 360 Modena - one turn of the steering wheel = I knew
Conclusion is, I respect the 996TT like I do the GTR, but don't ever care to buy one along with the 997TT. If I wanted the 996TT, I'd have one right now.
I want rare (GT3) and flashier (Ferrari).
I prefer the 01' 02's with under 30k miles (cause there are SO many of them), and starting at around $60k but yes, it's the best bang for a car that held supercar status from MY2001 'till around MY2004.
I don't call any 911 a supercar.
A supercar has a super-price, is super-rare, and is super-fast all at the same time. The GT2 is $200K, but the problem is it looks like similar to your regular Carrera. A blessing for the regular Carrera, but a bit of a curse in some ways for the semi-super-priced, super-rare, and super-fast 997 GT2.
A car that can be readily had for less than a new BMW 530 is NOT a supercar. Sorry to burst any bubbles here. The only supercar Porsche has made as of late is the Carrera GT. THAT is a supercar. Lambo Murc, Ferrari F430, Pagani Zonda = supercars.
1) No one said it has to be your daily driver, but it could if you wanted it to be.
2) I've had both and prefer the Turbo's looks. I like the looks and distinction of the Turbo Intakes and the front lip, I can live with or without the rear-reflector. Also, "Turbo" emblem just looks SO good on the ***!
3) Don't want more power? Cmon dude, do you really think we believe you don't want more power? Also, Easy to lighten the 996TT by 400 Lbs through Mods.
If you don't want a 996tt don't drive a Gt700 that's been lightened by 400lbs!!
It'll be tough to find a GT700 given how rare they are so I probably won't ever end up driving one anyways.
I like the looks of my car over your Turbo, period. Exterior, interior, everything. For me, the visuals are as important if not more important than the outright power figures. And honestly the 360 Modena didn't feel any faster than my C4S, but still it felt 10x more fun and special.
I'm a naturally aspirated engine kinda guy and there's clear evidence of this. S2000, M3, now C4S. The only thing I'd switch up is going back to RWD.
I agree that they are not supercars now, but when new a 2001 996TT was, in my book. I think some would call a brand new 997TT a supercar, and some would not. I certainly agree that now, the supercar is what you call one. But, what I disagree about with you, a 997 GT2 is CERTAINLY a supercar!
I do agree with you re the all wheel drive. I hate it! and I DON'T drive it in snow. Interior on Turbo is same as C4S. Only main difference of ext. is rear-defl.
Ok, I like using sports analogies so...
The 997GT2 is like Michael Redd of the Milwaukee Bucks. Awesome player. Can score at will. Has all the shots. 3-point, mid-range, driving to the basket. Skills.
But he'll never ever "play" like KOBE, DWADE, TMAC, etc.
Super, awesome player. But not special enough. I'd much rather have a Challenge Stradale (360 based) than the 997GT2. No question.
Cheers to Porsches and Ferraris
I totally understand your point, but it's based on perception. In MY opinion, the GT2 IS Kobe or Wade!! But, the Veron or CGT is Jordan (at his peak)!
And when brand new in 2001, the 996TT was up there.
Wikipedia Defines a Supercar:
Supercar is a term generally used for a high-end sports car, whose performance is highly superior to that of its contemporaries. It has been defined specifically as "a very expensive, fast or powerful car with a centrally located engine"
, and stated in more general terms: "it must be very fast, with sporting handling to match," "it should be sleek and eye-catching" and its price should be "one in a rarified atmosphere of its own."[2] but the proper application of the term is subjective and disputed, especially among enthusiasts. The use of the term can be dependent on the era: a vehicle that may have been considered a supercar at one time may not retain its superiority indefinitely.[citation needed] The term supercar may refer to factory-built, street-legal sports cars.[3] Some supercars include some of the features required for race cars, like the roll cage, [4] while other supercars are in general race cars with only the minimum legal required modifications made (e.g. meeting emission regulations, legal tyres, limited exhaust note) to be street legal.
For you Ben. Was with my friend at the dealership picking up his 997TT cab on Sat. Saw a white GT3 with 3400 miles asking 129K. I loved being in the warehouse looking at them toys.. His TT is in the back behind the coupe. Sorry for the cell phone pics.
both are siq rides, thx bud.
if that were gonna be my gt3, i'd add techart sideskirts, paint the front lower lip, lower it on 20" work brom wheels for the street. done. of course mine would be arctic silver.
that would look so insane and drive so insanely great it'd be tough to pass up. what a special car porsche made!
the 911 is long overdue for LED rear lights. i think porsche took a step backwards withthe cheapo looking rear lights on the 997s compared to the 996s. the plastic is just... way too rental car shiny
it totally modernizes the package. i love them and miss them (my M3 had full factory LED rears).
what's weird is the 5 series, the refreshed ones, have LED turn signals and stationary red running lights, but for some stupid reason the red light when braking is incandescent. totally stupid move. i have no idea why they'd do that since braking is where the LED benefits come thru (lights up faster).
