I knew it was a scam, but I figured I'd at least inquire whether he was using an actual physician's identity to do it...

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

23 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is it for real or a scam? I first saw this ad on autotrader but it is now gone. Then I came across it on cars.com: http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...eadExists=true Funny how the ad is for a private seller but it looks as though the car is sitting at a dealer's lot to me. I replied and here is the email I got back. But none of my questions were answered, just this response. ------------------------------ Hello, I'm very glad you are interested in buying my car. It is a great car.Excellent condition. Here are the selling conditions : 1) Before I ship/drive and/or meet you for inspection the car to you I request a minimum deposit of $8000. 2) We will use an escrow service which will take care of this $8000 deposit. My lawyers advised that through an escrow company is the best way to close expensive deals. Here is the link: http://www.car-escrow.com The fees are very low (0.75%). I'm already a member of them ([email removed] is my registered email address). Also you can check my rating (6 positive transactions and none of them negative) by clicking "CHECK AN USER RATING" from their home page (just enter my email). Here is how we will proceed: 1) start the transaction with me (or I can start it as a seller if you want, just let me know). 2) secure $8000 to escrow (it will act as a third party securing the funds). 3) after you make the deposit, I will ship/drive the car for inspection to you. IMPORTANT: When you start the transaction , write the first deposit value ($8000), not the total price of the vehicle, we will transact only the first deposit through the escrow service. After you will approve the car, you will have to wire the balance to me and also tell escrow to release the secured funds to me. This is the only way I can close this deal with you. I'm a busy doctor and I can not meet all my potential buyers. After the deposit is confirmed ,we can move forward. Regards, Dr. Johnson Marc. PS: If you will refuse the car after the inspection period (which can be up to 31 days), escrow will return your money back (FULL REFUND) and also you will have to return the car to me. Also check the following links to see why it is safe to use this kind of service --------------------- Buyer beware. I wonder sometimes if it is even worth trying to deal with a private seller any more. If you are not close enough to drive to check out the car why bother. So many scammers out there.

POST 3Original post

Scam! One thing you do not see very often is doctors referring to themselves in their email as Dr. John Smith in a situation like this nor do you hear "I'm a busy doctor and I can not meet all my potential buyers". Is there such thing as a doc with too much time on their hands? I can speak from experience and say NO! (M.D. and Ph.D. in my house) Besides, securing 8K up front is huge for a deposit. It just amazes me the number of people that still fall for these scams.

POST 4Original post

It's a definite scam, but I'm curious whether www.car-escrow.com is a fraud as well. hey but you've got his e-mail address

POST 5Original post

Scam. I got the same email on a car I inquired about, from the same guy. It was on an E46 M3.

POST 7Original post

POST 10Original post

I got the same email as well. So I went and did my diligence on the AMA Website searching for a Dr. Johnson Marc, a Dr. Marc Johnson, and all sorts of variations in between (searching in Oregon), and there is no such physician in the state (or in Ashville, OR as the ad states). I knew it was a scam, but I figured I'd at least inquire whether he was using an actual physician's identity to do it... what an idiot..

POST 11Original post

as well you can look up his name in the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners (It took me all of 1 min) to verify there is no Johnson Marc, M.D.

POST 12Original post

IMBECILE!! Well done boys. What does he take us for...sheesh!!!

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I also got a phone number. Bet it is not real. his email addy: [email removed]

POST 14Original post

wow that is one slow server hosting that scam site! They have no phone number, address, etc., but there is a contact for with one caveat: "NOTE: Because of spammers, we will not accept direct emails. Please use this form to contact us. Thank you!" As well, what escrow compnay requires this? What requirements are needed to use the services provided by CAR-ESCROW.COM? The following requirements must be met: 1) internet access; 2) an email address; 3) meeting our minimum browser requirements SCAM!!!

POST 15Original post

oops, there is an address listed in NYC on W 14th. Anybody car to drop by?

POST 16Original post

Don't you guys have some agency to bust these guys FBI, CIA or something? In the UK we would get the Interenet Fraud Squad in on this ******.

POST 17Original post

This is the same guy that try to pull this same scam to one of my friend looking for a C4S a few months ago. What a fluke, DR....hahahaha.

POST 18Original post

I think the address is the Istanbul restaurant. BTW - Google search comes up with many references to fraudulant practice and refusal to return money. Check it out. Its sad what the internet turned into, at this point 50% of mail coming to my email server is spam and con artist rule the rest.....

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

his ad has been pulled off cars.com

POST 20Original post

QUOTE "IMBECILE!! Well done boys. What does he take us for...sheesh!!!" UNQUOTE Perhaps people who "in good faith and trust in reputation" buy Porsche 996's with a host of design and manufacturing defects from a manufacturer who gets by with ignoring things much more serious than a simple Con Man's SCAM???

POST 21Original post

This scam originates from Indonesia and is used on many big ticket emotional sale items. I collect vintage guitars and have seen it many times on ebay. You would think that these guys could at least take the time to clean up his grammar a little bit! Avoid!! Josh

POST 22Original post

I'm sure this guy is a total scam, but just fyi: Dr. Amar Bose's doctorate is in marketing, not audio engineering! Why did he ask so much for the car? Just kidding!

POST 23Original post

perrys7342, What a stupid comparision. One scam is PREDICATED on outright dishonesty, the other is an inadvertant design flaw devoid of bare faced deceit. One can reluctantly understand denial and obfuscation when reputation is at stake, but to juxtapose the Porsche company with some two bit scam artist is a insult to say the least. Us owners do not apply a double standard,we are angry with Porsche (and BTW i haven't had an RMS leak) but people of the ilk of this fellow should be deplored for the criminal that he is. Munro 86
