Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

This thing was checked over before I bought it, and has ALL maintenance records.

When I was doing my monthly check, I noticed that not only was the reservoir full of muck, but it was also empty of coolant.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just picked up a 2000 Cab in June. (my first Porsche) I had the coolant reservoir replaced at my dealer, because it was cracked. At the same time, they found a leak in the cam cover seal which I also had replaced. Yesterday I was doing my monthly fluid check, and discovered a thick brown sludge in the reservoir. I checked the oil, and it looks fine. Does this sound like a head gasket, or could it be a much more costly issue?
I am taking it to the dealer tomorrow, but for now, I have no choice but to drive it. Please advise!!!
Thank You
Someone may have mixed in the wrong kind of antifreeze. Some of the newer long life antifreezes will form sludge if they are exposed to air too much. Oil sludge in the water would float on top.
They are telling me it is either a cracked head, or a cracked block. This thing was checked over before I bought it, and has ALL maintenance records. All scheduled maintenance was done at the dealership where it was purchased (which is the same dealer it is at now). The car has 49k miles on it. If a major part of the engine is cracked, don't you think that Porsche should front the bill? I can understand paying for labor, but I don't think I should pay for the parts.
Any suggestions?
Flush the coolomg system completely and refill. If it comes nack again...then worry about it. Like a previous poster said...it just may be contaminated from an improper additive.
No warranty... Do you think an additive would produce a light brown, very thick sludge? I didn't mention.. 3 quarts of coolant disappeared in 30 days.. When I was doing my monthly check, I noticed that not only was the reservoir full of muck, but it was also empty of coolant. I proceeded to fill it with 3 quarts of distilled water...
You would know if coolant was in the oil because you would leave a trail of steam behind you as you drive. Clean the cooling system out and refill. Report back if it doesn't remain clean.
Just heard back from Porsche... They are fully covering the replacement engine. The dealership is covering all of the labor... Not only that, but they are going to have it ready for me to pick up next Monday with a net tab of $0.
All I have to say is.... "Porsche Owner for LIFE"
It took them almost a week to tear it down.. The engine block was cracked in the #3 cylinder. They didn't give me all of the details. I have to go out tomorrow to pick up a couple of things from the car... I'm going to take a camera.. Posts to come..
Wow! So glad to hear Porche will pick up the repair! You will now have a car with a zero-miles engine!! How cool is that?!
Is it a Tip or Manual? If manual, consider getting them to put in a new clutch. That way you know is a new part and will know that everything is cover for many many miles!
Sharing your joy!!
PS - And yes, post photos... you know we are all addicted to those!!
WOW!!
49,000 miles, 4 years old, bought second hand, out of warranty, and they give you a FREE engine with free labor!! Now that's what I call service!!
