Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
I think the general rule is if the tread differs by more than 1/2 on the same axle then replace both.
Leading evidence: 'Replace both' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace both' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Honestly, this has happened to me twice, best to replace with two new rears.

Suggestion
Tire manufacturers do not recommend using a tire beyond this time frame because the ozone will breakdown the rubber compound/material.

I would be less tolerant if used under track conditions.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Erk. Guy followed me into a parking lot yesterday to say he was a fellow p-car owner and I have a screw in my RR tire. Went over to Skip's WheelWerks but he was just closing. I'll get back over there on Friday but:
- The rears are 60% worn. Assuming the screw goes all the way into the tire, I'll probably have to replace both (last time I tried a patch the tire shimmied, and anyway the speed rating is lost).
- If I keep the LR as a spare for the next puncture, how long can it sit on the shelf before it can no longer be used? Will bagging it help?
I recall reading somewhere that a "shelf life" of a tire is about 6 to 8 years max. Tire manufacturers do not recommend using a tire beyond this time frame because the ozone will breakdown the rubber compound/material.
Look at your tire's DOT number. Next to that number, you will find the manufacture date like:
"2303" This means the tire was built on the 23rd week of the 52 total and in the year of 2003. In this example, I would not use this tire beyond June of 2011, regardless of how much treadwear is left.
I would take the manuf's recommendations with a grain of salt. I could see that a tire that is baking in the sun for 6 to 8 years would be all old and crackly long before then. Then again, a tire stored in a cool dry place indoors possibly with with a light coating of 303 UV protectant might be perfectly good. This is for street use, of course. I would be less tolerant if used under track conditions. I think the general rule is if the tread differs by more than 1/2 on the same axle then replace both. What kind of tires are they? Maybe someone is is need of the exact opposite tire. It happens. For example, I would like to find a left 295/30 PZero Corsa (non-sytem) like-new as a spare as one of mine has some minor damage--I know good luck
Lee: I'm glad it was a non issue.
And for whatever it's worth here's a link on an article from the TireRack on how to store tires:
