Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, First post on the rennlist site. I currently own a Boxster ( second one ) as well as a 968. Love them both, but want to add 1 more P car to the barn. I have started shopping for a 996 . RMS aside, and of course a PPI. Is there any reason to avoid the first model year car? I will not be logging many miles nor will it be a daily driver. Were there many changes to suspension / engine / transmission during the first few years of the 996? Also, why do I see them advertised with 5spd as well as 6spd trannies in the same year?? I am leaning toward going with the car that is priced right / well optioned and well maintained regardless of the model year ( unless I hear otherwise from you all ). I would like to hear from any of you who have owned 1 or prefferably 2 of these cars. I do know I am after a coupe with a standard trans. Thanks in advance, ( is it not a great time for the car buying / driving experience these days !!) Ford

POST 2Original post

try 2 get a facelifted model if it fits ur budget. appart from the motor, there were substantial chassis improvements and other desirable changes. i happen 2 have a 1999 model (pre-facelift) and it runs flawlessly and has been tracked without problems...other than the ones i cause of course.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There seems to be a problem on your hood that needs immediate attention!! Ford

POST 6Original post

1999 model had 296 HP and the 2000 and 2001 had 300 HP. Each year had minor improvements over the previous year as far as interior quality. 2001 model had remote hood opening. There were surely other minor differences, but I'm not aware of them. I'm selling my car if you're interested. ad on cars.com

POST 7Original post

You will find that there is a price difference between the pre and post-02 996 which reflects the many improvements made in the car. I would get a 02 or later car if your budget allows it. That said, the earlier cars were very nice and have come down to very reasonable prices. I generally avoid the first year of any model regardless of the manufacturer.

POST 8Original post

^ other notable changes are (if i recall correctly): - 30% increase in chassis stiffness -40% decrease in lift on front end. -as you said, more power -interior/exterior options. JimB and the race guys can tell u about the otehr differences.
