I was just checking O2 extenders on fabspeed website and they're $150 for the pair.
Leading evidence: 'Check o2 extenders' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Suggestion
Cat bypass pipes reduce exhaust backpressure to the point that low rpm cylinder filling suffers, something an ECU reflash can only help to a point (that is, if the tuner adjusts cam timing correctly, but even here you are limited in the range of adjustment).

As for the pipes I will probably get them on this weekend and report back any changes from the butt dyno.

I think you would be just fine using the OEM fasteners etc

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Getting some interest in these Fabspeed Cat bypass pipes.. but nobody has bought them yet. I've been trying to sell my extra parts because I'm going broke living off savings since the Gov't furloughed me (and most my coworkers) early August (US Navy Reservist) maybe I just need more coverage than the FS forum. They fit all 996's except the GT2/3 and Turbo. They were only used for less than 200 miles; I have been asking $450 shipped OBO
Thanks!
I'm guessing its a hard sell for most due to emission tests. I would expand your marketing to eBay, Craigslist, Pelican, 6speedonline at the very least. I've found 6speeders are more fond of mods.

As to the CEL Fabspeed said "CEL may come on but car will run great." Their dyno said +41 ft/lbs of Torque.
Came on the 40th anniversary edition 911 about three times then stopped. I had the O2 sensors installed nice and tight into the Fabspeed pipes and maybe I was lucky but the CEL stopped going off. Or I should say, stopped coming on. Ha
As with all cat bypass, it is the secondary o2 sensor that will throw a CEL. The one in front of the cat is unchanged, but the one after the cat is supposed to be receiving cleaner information. An extender will just delay the onset of the CEL
O2 extender will work on some cars depending on the version of ECU you have as some are more finicky than others. Some have had good success on these cars. Another option is to have your ECU reflashed to lower the threshold of the O2 sensing values.
I would gamble on some O2 extenders first as that's only a $20 gamble vs. $500-$1k for the reflash depending on who you go with.
Not sure on the 41ft/lbs of torque. LOL
^^^ That's the x-pipe version so not apples to apples but their readings seem high all the time. Dunno if the stock cats were clogged or what. just sayin...
eBay. They don't have to be Porsche specific. Just get the universal ones with the same thread sizing and hole.
Also if you have the luxury of having space around the O2, you can either get straight or 90degree. I recommend the 90 degree as it will be more effective at fooling the ecu since it's more downstream and "around the corner".
All part stores sell the "O2 sensor extenders" they are actualy called spark plug anti foullers or spark plug extenders. I never beleive any HP gain claims from the manufacturer. The rule is cut the claim in half and then maybe you are close to what they might do.
Thanks guys for the pointers. Im currently working out the deal on the bypass pipes so hopefully ill get them in a few days. As for the horsepower gains im also very skeptical of what the internet claims but im mostly doing this mod for sound and any IF any gain I get it will be icing on the cake.
I have the x-pipe version and you'll notice quite a bit of performance increase. Better throttle response, sounds and top end but you will lose some midrange. It's a trade off but well worth it for me. I also have the o2 extenders with no cel coming on.
Thats good to hear about the performance increase. I already have gemballa mufflers and headers on my car. I hope i dont loose too much mid range.
Tnx nismosd

Thanks for the pipes. They look brand spanking new. You did overkill with packaging, but it was to my benefit.
Great guy to work with, it was a pleasure doing business.
As for the pipes I will probably get them on this weekend and report back any changes from the butt dyno.
Exactly what I was gonna say. If you know what to buy, you can spend a lot less.
If you know a muffler guy, chances are he'll sell you one even cheaper. Show up with a 12-pack of domestic light beer, and it might even be free.
I don't see the point in buying two - I figgered the goal is to create a delta between the upstream sensor and the downstream sensor. If you pull them both out of the exhaust stream the same amount, seems like you defeat the purpose. But I'm an idiot, so meh.
On a 996 an ECU reflash will not help much, as air/fuel only matters so much in regards to power. Cat bypass pipes reduce exhaust backpressure to the point that low rpm cylinder filling suffers, something an ECU reflash can only help to a point (that is, if the tuner adjusts cam timing correctly, but even here you are limited in the range of adjustment).
Maybe on your specific products but I've seen enough dyno graphs that say otherwise. Different combos so not sure if you're referring to just doing the cat bypass with nothing else.
In fact German companies like Cargraphic reccommends an ecu retune with their cat bypass pipes to get the most out of them.
Yes I am referring to cat bypass and nothing else.
Cargraphic states ECU/DME programming required because if you do not, you will trigger a CEL. That is the only reason it is "required". The car will run fine otherwise, but with a noticeable loss in low end torque.
I agree with this but my viewpoint is that the low end will be better if the ecu is retuned based on the data I've seen.
I'll hopefully have my own before and after dynos in a couple months or so but it will be on a combination of parts so not apples to apples.
I put the pipes on the car this Saturday morning, took less then an hour.
BUTT DYNO APPROVED
*It pulls through the gears a lot smoother
* I didn't feel any low end toque loss and mid range to red line I can really feel it pulls harder.
* No CEL with the spark plug extenders on the secondary O2 sensors.
It sounds awesome almost like muffler bypass pipes, but it's a little too loud for my taste as my car is a DD. I'm going keep them on for a few weeks and see if I can get used to the loudness if not unfortunately as much as I like the performance aspect of it they're going to come off and I will try to see if I can score 200cell cats later on.
Did you go with the straight or the 90 degree versions. And how long are yours?
BTW, I might know someone that might be selling their's if anyone is interested.
I went with the straight as non of the parts stores around my area had the 90 degree ones. But I got two for each side and connected them together as each one was a little over an inch long so the tip of the O2 sensor will sit higher on the pipe. Then I had to drill out the inside part about 1/4 inch cause it was too short and the sensor would not catch the thread. All in all I have been driving the car pretty hard for the past few days and still no CEL.
(fingers crossed)
Bypass pipes are coming off this weekend. It got me pulled over this morning by Glendale PD. He was a nice guy and big Porsche fan so he let me off with a warning. Glendale is a small city and most cops probably know my car by now. I'm sure if I run across him in the near future he will probably check up on me.
I don't think that if I switch back to my original mufflers and keep the pipes its going to quite down much. My Gemballa cans are gundo hacked with 1.5 inch pipes, when I take the pipes off im also going to take the mufflers off and take it to my shop that did the welding and have them put 2 inch pipes and see how that will sound.
My car sounds like a darn camry now compared to what it was without the cats. Since our cars are already somewhat fast I noticed more of the power difference after switching back to original cats, the butt dyno could really feel the midrange torque loss, throttle response also suffered.
Wow, that noticeable on the butt dyno, eh? Sucks but that's the cost of living in Cali I guess. I guess part of Cali's deficit is wasted on db sound meters and lowering rulers that some popo's get equipped with.
Yup, I didn't think It would be that much noticeable either, when I put them on I noticed the difference but it wasn't as dramatic as going back to stock. And you hit the spot with the popo comment too especially here in Glendale
