Speedo, is there a way to recalibrate the factory speedo as previous owner fitted 285/30/18 rear tires as opposed to factory size of 265/35/18.

What is recommended fuel, previous owner said he ran 93 ethanol free, now I cannot find that here in Jacksonville, Fl.

for fuel, I use Chevron Supreme almost exclusively.

Suggestion
The only reason manufactures tell you to run- a higher octane is to ensure you don't blow your car up thru knock and detonation because you would being stupid with your car..It's a fail safe for dummies..

Use lower octane fuel and saving 20 cents (about 5

Suggestion
I believe using lower octane fuel and saving 20 cents (about 5 to 7% cost) is a wasted savings as the engine will not run at it's designed efficiency level.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everybody
Just purchased a 2000 911 with 72k miles and have a couple of questions
What is recommended fuel, previous owner said he ran 93 ethanol free, now I cannot find that here in Jacksonville, Fl. Plenty of ethanol free but all only 89. So 93 with ethanol or 89 ethanol free? I have been running it on bp ultra 93 and seems happy enough.
Oil, again previous owner used mobil 0/40w, that seems way too thin for our hot climate, 5/40 or 5/50 or?
Speedo, is there a way to recalibrate the factory speedo as previous owner fitted 285/30/18 rear tires as opposed to factory size of 265/35/18. This gives a smaller rolling diameter which makes the speedo fast and will also roll the odo more than actual. I calculate new tires are 24.7" and factory is 25.3". Yes buy the right tires...lol but the ones one are brand new so prefer to wear them out!
Know that is a lot of diverse questions but any light on the matters would be great
89 is more then fine unless you plan on keep it at 7k rpms..and its not stock. The only reason manufactures tell you to run- a higher octane is to ensure you don't blow your car up thru knock and detonation because you would being stupid with your car..It's a fail safe for dummies.. but, as you will fine out here, there are plenty of them give bad advise to pick and choose who you listen to.
I have ran nothing but cheap 87-89 in mine for a year with ZERO knock and zero issues.. You could run a little techron thru it every 5-10k miles if it makes you feel any better.
As for the tires, your speedometer will read 4 miles fast from the factory, so the tires might put it right back close to what it should be.. Although my car has 285/30/18 and still reads about 3 miles fast. Use a free GPS app for your phone to test it and just go from there. No since in speed tons of money for something that may never read prefect anyways. A search will explain why.
While you can use lower Octane fuel, the systems that monitors Knock will dial back on timing and reduce power. So if you want to realize the full potential of your Porsche engine - use the highest Octane (and reasonably priced) fuel you can find locally. Here in Washington we have 92 as the top grade and we are stuck with "Up to 10%" Ethanol. Not Ideal - but it is what it is. I believe using lower octane fuel and saving 20 cents (about 5 to 7% cost) is a wasted savings as the engine will not run at it's designed efficiency level. You may even have lower fuel MPG which wipes out the few Penny's in savings. Just my two Penny's worth opinion.
well not to worried on cost of fuel, just what is best!
previous owner was very stern on using ethanol free fuel!
called brumos porsche and they did not seem concerned about the ethanol content
we even have a couple of stations here selling 98 octane, at a price premium obviously!
i did get a check engine light using murphys and racetrac 93 but since sticking to bp and shell 93 , it went away and no further instances
Hi Crow and welcome. Use only the highest octane and best name brand you can find. No cheap crap fuel should ever go in your Porsche.
As for oil, oh boy. Opinions will vary but common sense will tell you use 5-40 in your climate. Dump the M1 crap and swap to JG DT40. A specific blend just for the M96 developed by the most recognized M96 expert in the US.
for fuel, I use Chevron Supreme almost exclusively.
for oil, Mobil 1 0w40. Just had annual service done, and Jim Ellis (Atlanta) says Porsche gives them the evil eye if they use 5w40. DIY'ers can get Mobil 1 pretty cheap at Wal-Mart.
You'll get many opinions on both these topics.
91 is the highest octane that I can buy in Colorado, and I have used it without any issues. I'm also unable to find gasoline without ethanol, so I have to use that. I haven't had any issues up to this point.
looks like sticking to the bp ultra should work well enough then
As for oil i really think the 0/40 is just thin for florida so 5/40 will go in next oil change
many thanks for all the kind words and merry xmas
My ind. shop here in the Tampa area rec. 20- or 15-50 for the Florida summer. Amsoil is what I have in my C4.... had no issues... just my .02 cents
congrats on your "new" 996 and welcome to the family !! (: pics please
Crown Region has a good road trip in August. I did it this year . Will be back next year.
