Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

To answer your question I would check a few things..
Leading evidence: 'Check few things' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check few things' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

I would also check the oil tubes that live where the spark plugs do.

I demand to see pics of how good you cleaned the motor before I could respect you again.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It seems like oil leaking into exhaust . it looks like oil is dripping from middle and rear of valve covers
besides valve cover gaskets what other stuff should I look for or will need replacing?, I will order cam plugs too and exhaust clamps for mufflers.
At 124,000 miles, the chain guides are gone, the chains are shot, the IMSB is a maybe. So I would post pone the leak fixing and drive it until your ready to drop the engine and do it all. If your confident in compression and no material in sump or filter, just drive it until your ready.
I dont understand wanting to half *** patch things up while working in an absurdly small engine compartment when you could just lower the egnine/trans and fix all issues. The engine has reached the end of the road as they say. Getting 124,000 miles out of a HP engine is not bad at all. Its a Porsche so get over the high price of repairs. It just comes with the 996 bargain purchase price.
KK why do you continue shooting yourself in the foot? Do you realize your the primary reason why 996 values are down and why there are over 550 996's in inventory in the US alone? You're devaluing your own cars resale every time you speak but I guess it doesn't matter as your planning on keeping your lovely "piece of crap" for your living room ornament.
Hey Alpy, I already thanked you in the other thread. FYI, I just got my engine/trans back in and it runs perfect. I replaced many extras while it was out and I should be good for another 2500 miles, right?
I would really hope that 124K is not rebuild time...in fact, based on the high mileage thread I saw on the forum, I will optimistically say that I do not plan on opening up my engine until WELL BEYOND 124K miles......more like 250K.......
To answer your question I would check a few things.. First what side is the leak on. If it is on the drivers side I would look at the AOS boots if the leak is towards the front of the car. I would also check the oil tubes that live where the spark plugs do. Someone else already suggested that. Also on the passenger side the oil pressure sender is at the top of the heads and can leak as well. Clean it up real good with a rag and degreaser and drive for a few days to see exactly where it is coming from.
Doing the oil tubes is not a lot of money but does take some patience. I have heard of the green cam covers leaking but have never seen this on my 996.
