Suggestion

If a badly worn IMS bearing was capable of causing detectable cam timing variations, I suspect the IMS would be leaking oil like a $2 bucket and would sound like that bucket was filled with pebbles.

I don't see anything from the OBD that gives camshaft timing, but wondering if there was something else that it throws that I could set an alarm for using the Torque Pro App?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So a couple days ago, I posted about setting up my car with an OBDII logger that connects to my radio head unit, giving me all kinds of info that I never had access to before. I was wondering if there is something I can get from there that would help give an early warning sign to IMS failure. for example, I read the following from Pelican... "Another way to check the engine is with the factory PST-2 tool, or the Durametric tool (see Pelican Technical Article: Reading Porsche 911 Carrera Fuel Injection Fault Codes). You can compare the deviations in the timing between the two camshafts to see if they vary widely, particularly when revving the engine (see Figure 2). Sometimes a failing IMS bearing will also trigger a check engine light warning on your dash, as the cars computer realizes that there is a significant deviation between the two camshaft readings." I don't see anything from the OBD that gives camshaft timing, but wondering if there was something else that it throws that I could set an alarm for using the Torque Pro App? Anyone done something like that

POST 2Original post

While I would not wish to contradict a Pelican Parts assertion as they have a well earned reputation for Porsche expertise, I doubt that a worn IMS bearing could produce a detectable variation in cam timings. Given: the M96 engine series' IMS shaft only drives the exhaust valve cams as the intake valve cams are driven by slave chains associated with the exhaust cams. If a badly worn IMS bearing was capable of causing detectable cam timing variations, I suspect the IMS would be leaking oil like a $2 bucket and would sound like that bucket was filled with pebbles. relinuca

POST 3Original post

Why would it leak oil? You can have a flange seal intact and a blown bearing at the same time.

POST 4Original post

Lots of things lead to cam timing deviations. In my experience once you've had a notable cam timing deviation the IMSB is too far gone to have overrated material laden oil. On a 5 chain engine cam deviations are often elevated by worn 4th and 5th chain wear pads that are toast. Dirty oil can even lead to cam timing deviations, especially in 3 chain engines.

Interesting statement. How dirty we talking about and are we talking micro level deviation?

POST 6Original post

My guess is the tensioner gets clogged and then the chain stays loose.

POST 7Original post

Look at the 3 chain vane cell adjuster.. Study how it works and what makes it work. You'll see that it's all dependent upon oil quantity and quality.
