Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

i use 15w50 Royal Purple but have used the stock 0w40 as well before.
Leading evidence: 'Use 15w50 royal purple' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace now' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Once the engine is hot, it makes no difference if you are running 0W40 or 5W40.

But taking a stab since he advertised a Road America event recently my guess is he is in a climate where it is not necessary to run anything thicker than the 0W-40 for the occasional DE.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Does anyone have any recommendations of what weight of oil to use for an 11 year old 996 with 100+ miles? I do about 6 DEs per year, as well as some around town driving. I noticed the shop put in 0W40 last season, is that too thin? I had been using 5W40 previous to that change, and am wondering what kind to buy this year.
Can we PLEASE not jump on another noobie?
The lower number on oil weight, i.e. the 0 in 0W40 represents the weight equivalent viscosity of the oil at low temperature, while the higher number (40 in this case) represents the viscosity behavior at high temps. Porsche recommends 0W40 so that you have a low viscosity oil upon startup. Once the engine is hot, it makes no difference if you are running 0W40 or 5W40. I doubt very much if there would be any advantage to 5W40 over 0W40. A higher weight oil MIGHT be advantageous for tracking (ie some sort of 50 weight), but you are likely to give up the low temperature low viscosity behavior.
Bottom line, for the type of driving you describe (6 DE's a year and some street driving) I think 0W40 is fine, as is 5W40.
Ah, Mike to the rescue...........
How can that question even be answered when there is no indication of where he is tracking? Putting your location is a very simple thing to do either in a post or even better, your control panel. I've never understood why people feel the need to be as secretive as possible in an internet forum.
But taking a stab since he advertised a Road America event recently my guess is he is in a climate where it is not necessary to run anything thicker than the 0W-40 for the occasional DE. 5W-50 would be good as well.
But we all know how oil threads go...........
Because you never know when the feds or the rapists are watching. What's worse is when they do come out of hiding & get you, you won't be able to defend yourself, because the feds are the rapists.
50 is supposed to be better lubrication during high heat periods by staying thicker. You can run 50 all day every day. Be more attentive to being at operating temp before hammering it using the 50 weight even if it's a blend with 15 or other light oils.
It's strange the way porsche was suggesting one oil was the only one to use but to each their own. Now I hear they say something else. I guess they aren't paid advertising or getting bucks for exclussively using the old oil. What ever the case have fun.
i use 15w50 Royal Purple but have used the stock 0w40 as well before. I just recently changed to 15w50. I live in southern california so it doesn't go anywhere below freezing here in LA
What's with the fruit with Blue Moon?
Not too many days ago in a hotel restaurant I ordered a glass of Blue Moon (Spaten (sp?) tap busted) -- my first glass of Blue Moon -- and it came with a lemon wedge.
Then I was in this same hotel restaurant the other day and ordered another Blue Moon and this time the bartender asked me if I wanted lemon or orange with it?
Sincerely,
Macster.
Blue Moon is a yeast beer. The orange takes the edge off the beer. A kin to a lemon in a yeasty Weiss beer. The citrus cuts down on the head in both cases. But after few 5 or 6 doesn't much matter.
They could throw a watermelon in their and I would never know.
Lemoncello?!? I was waiting for more posts after drinking that.
I think this is the first OT post I've seen from you, Macster. Thanks.
My local pub puts orange slices on some and lemon on others. I don't think they fruit the Blue Moon. They have over a hundred on tap, and know better than I do. Oh, also they don't carry Bud, Miller, or Coors. Blasphemy!
Back to oil.
