Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I installed the B & M Short Shifter over the weekend. It took me and a friend ( a pretty good wrench ) about 2 and 1/2 hours ( the instructions say 30 mins ). In the process I damaged the boot and we were not able to get the **** off the shift handle . So, right now, there is no **** and no boot . The B & M Shifter rod is flat and the OEM is round, do I need to buy a specific **** that will fit the B & M, and I figure the boot just snaps right in. Also, the last 911 I owned was in 1974. I recall that to check the oil level, you had to have the engine running and the oil should be warm. Is that also the way you check the oil in the 2000 996

POST 2Original post

sorry i cant help with the shifter/boot. i am sure you will get it right. diy is good. as far as oil - 03 c4s says: preconditions for correct oil level measurement with dipstick - vehicle must be level - engine must be switched off and at operating temperature - let engine oil flow into the pan for a few minutes checking the oil level - withdraw the dipstick and clean with lint free cloth - push dipstick fully home, withdraw again and read off the oil level. difference between the two marks is approx 1.23L/1.33qt. my car has a dash display you can check oil level by to. i compared it to the manual level and it is spot on. good luck

POST 5Original post

pull the boot all the way up. There might be a small screw which you need an allen key. If not, put it in neutral, make sure the cup holder is pushed in, and pull up very hard!!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8560162

The B & M instructions refer to an allen key, but could not find one. I'll just shop around for a new aftermarket **** and boot . Thank you for all the replys and suggestions

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 8560431

Nah man, don't just buy another **** cause you can't find the screw. pull the boot inside out completely all the way to the top, and look for that square nut. In the middle of that nut, there should be a little screw which tightens!! That's all you need...

POST 8Original post

depending on year... some ***** just PULL off IIRC 2000 is one of those get the camera out and post up the issues... I re-read your original post... the top of the stock shift arm is flat... not round... you have to pull that **** off... be careful not to knock out a tooth or bust your windshield - it pulls straight off

POST 9Original post

https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...uestion-2.html see post #24 and #26

POST 10Original post

My 2000 definitely has the allen nut holding the **** on!! Loosen the nut, and the **** comes right off.

POST 12Original post

how about "check for allen" then pull the allen is tucked up under the boot on some cars right Jack?

POST 13Original post

Tucked up under the boot all the way at the top! OP - looks like you abandoned us! Take a pic of the current situation and we can assist from what we see. I can tell you if you need an allen key or not just by looking at the shifter.

POST 15Original post

Right, the optional sport shift **** is what I have! Good photo lesson, Ferd!

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Mine appears like the **** is leather and is part of the boot. I have pulled the boot all the way as far as I can and there is no allen nut I pulled so hard, it tore the leather boot . It appears that the **** and boot are one piece of leather. I have attached a couple of photos

POST 17Original post

Looking at that shifter, it looks like the whole assembly is out of the car! In this case, use a vice grip on the rod side and hold tight on the **** side and pull real hard. But you don't need to rip anything while doing this. Or, try spraying some WD40 in there and then pull! Don't look for an allen key cause there is none for that shifter!

POST 18Original post

That black plastic you see is all part of the shifter and it all pulls off. So don't pull from the boot or you will rip it all off.

POST 20Original post

And the stock shift lever will be flat like the B&M, once you get the factory **** off.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, I will take a ride down to my mechanic's place and use his vice grip. I will let you know if it works. I will definitely use the WD40 because I have already tried it without the WD40 . Hopefully I can get it off. There is a used shift **** and boot for sale $150 at a local dismantler, so I might do that. The one for sale has a black boot and shift **** but it should look ok since my car is black with a tan interior .

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8564678

You were absolutely correct I took the advice and used a vice and a little WD 40 and pulled it right off. Thank you Jules!!!!! The OEM Shift **** just snapped on Thanks to everyone that offered suggestions. Great group here in the 996 board

POST 23Original post

Larry, Where are you located in SoCal? I'm in Torrance. I have a extra 1 piec shift **** and boot in the same Savannah Beige color that I will be willing to sell you at a very low price. For future reference, I have gone through the process of removing the shifter **** a few times on my own car as well as on a friends. The trick I came up with is that I took a short piece of 2" X 4" of wood, laid it on a folded up towel on top of the center console next to the shifter. I then took a large crescent wrench, which I adjusted to go around the shifter shaft, then I pried the **** off of the shaft with the crescent wrench. Worked well every time, and much easier then trying to pull it of with brute force.

Hi, I'm in the San Fernando Valley. Torrance is just a hop skip and a jump away. How much do you want, and what kind of condition is it in?? I appreciate the offer and will wait for your response. I really tore my boot pretty bad. You can PM me if you like. Larry

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 8565519

Great tip. I'm tackling the SSK install nect week and have the same shift ****. I was already thinking through some approaches. I got to the fulcrum/lever idea, but was struggling with what to use as a lever. Crescent wrench is perfect.
