Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

But seriously, an easy way to check stage 1 fan is just to turn on your A/C compressor.

I was prepared to pull it all and change the fan too but it worked when i gave it 12v directly.

I'm going to be replacing both resistors on mine in the next few days.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I changed radiator ballast resistor on my own. At least the hi fan now runs, not tested lo speed yet...
I was under the impression only low speed is affected by the resistor but that wasn't the case? I was prepared to pull it all and change the fan too but it worked when i gave it 12v directly.
Anyway - happy camper here thanks to all the write-ups on the forum.
Simple intro: 35yrs old, wife & two kids 2 and 4.5, have had several "fun" cars before, currently also a Seven copy / Westfield which I built myself. this is my first Porsche, 996 4S, black with black interior (hence the nick...) navigation, full leather, PSE.
pics are tough as I can't upload from an iPad.

Hi
they cannot be unplugged - soldered into the harness. You have to cut the wires, remember which goes where (easier said than done as it is very cramped - I did one connector at a time). Then I crimped on new terminals and plugged in. Used proper crimp terminals and a proper tool - not the $5 version. Like this:
and use these (you will need two blue and one yellow, there is some kind of standard sizes):
I have used "open" crimps like this in exposed places and they work fine. Soldering and shrink-tubing on top like factory is a little overkill and difficult to do in situ. If removing the fan and everything it's a different matter and easier to do.
Get a PST2, you can activate the stage 1 and stage 2 fans. I don't think durametric can do this? Don't remember.
Umm... CEL's if fans are not working. Not sure.
For starters your engine would overheat. But seriously, an easy way to check stage 1 fan is just to turn on your A/C compressor. Stage 1 will turn on. Stage 2, well... it involves a hot day and a lot of idling on a hot day.
no CELs on my car. i understand fan stage 2 is on when AC is on, it's the low speed (stage1?) that I've not seen yet. My gauge never moves beyond 82ish degrees and believe they turn on at higher temps? then again AC is always on.
