As per my last post, I want to use the car as a daily driver and track the car, with some performance upgrades.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Howdy. My last post referred to purchasing a 996 40th, which imo is a great car, the only dilemma is they are so expensive in AUS. Atm there are 2 on the market in Aus, $124K and $132K, both low k's but neither with waranty as they are both private sales. Neither of them are budging much on price and I have a concern with the lack of warranty. I have turned my attention to the Cayman S. 2006-2007 manuals low k's, extend warranty's for around $100k. As per my last post, I want to use the car as a daily driver and track the car, with some performance upgrades. Is the 40th worth $20K + more than the Cayman S and what is others opinions of the pros and cons. Thanks.
Have you driven both? I'm sure they are both great [I've never driven a Cayman], but only you can make the decision if the 911is
worth
it. I think you know what kind of answers you'll get here.

What do you have to pay in duty and taxes to get something down into your home market? You could easily pay for a US vacation, buy the anniversary for $40K or so, ship and pay taxes and it should still be alot less than paying the local market price. I'm in Canada and the Porsche pricing here is a little outrageous as well when compared to the US market. Consequently, we are starting to see alot of US cars, only major drawback is the speedo in miles, but you really don't use that anyway.
It's the government making the money, not porsche. We have a 35% luxury car tax on any vehicle over $55K (Aus), plus our GST of 10%. Try this out, a 2009 cayman S, no options, on the road for around $165K ( that equates to $130 US). See when you see us Aussies driving porsches, you know how committed we are!!!
+1
A regular 996 will win a stoplight battle with a Cayman (but barely). An x51 996 will stomp them both.
From a power standpoint there will be no comparison, however the Cayman is just about the best handling car that Porsche makes.
What is important to you?
cayman s ----hands down
car feels like it is on rails!
amazing.
in retrospect, if you can get over the interior claustraphobic feeling, from a pure
handling perspective the gator gets my vote.
While I agree that some of the difference is going to account in taxes there is still a significant delta in actual Porsche pricing and the taxes do not, on their own, explain the large price differential. In Ontario we have 13% of value added tax and duty of 9% for vehicles not manufactured in Canada, US or Mexico but the difference in vehicle pricing approaches 50%. Nevertheless, it appears your home market is even pricier.
Congrats!
OK, now get the hell out of the 996 Forum and go to the Cayman Forum!!
Just kidding!
How about posting a couple of pics!
I would love to be able to consider a Cayman S but there is not enough legroom for me in the Cayman. If I move the seat all the way back to get the right amount of legroom, then the back of the seat hits the firewall and is forced into an extremely upright position. If I move the seat forward to get a comfortable amount of tilt in the seatback, then there is not enough legroom for me to drive the car comfortably.
To me this would have been a no-brainer, I would have gone with the 40th. It is simply the better performing car and has some unique features over the regular cars.
All 40th Jahre editions came with:
X51 engine ($17K option on other 911s) with 345 hp
Limited slip differential (not even option on regular 911's)
M030 sports suspension (in non-US markets and a slightly different variant of US M030 in US)
Polished 18" Carrera wheels (unique to this model)
GT silver paint (unique paint, not optional on other models until the 997 came out)
Full leather with natural grey interior
Front bumper from the Carrera 4S for improved cooling.
Sport seats standard with GT Silver painted backets
GT Silver painted center console
Sound Plus steroe upgrade
There were only a few options:
Bose stereo
6-disc CD changer
PCM (Navigation)
Comfort Seats
Rear Wiper
Floor Mats
They are simply fantastic cars. I have an X51 and it is simply a huge step up in power. My dyno compared to the original base 3.6l is posted on this forum. If you campare the dyno sheets of an X51 to a 997S 3.8l, it makes the same power and actually more torque than the later S in a car that weighs less. To step down to a Cayman S (notice how I phrased it), you give up about 60 hp (50 at the wheels), the LSD, sports suspension and the uniquenees of the 40th. Finally, which will have better resale down the line? ...that one is obvious
Red's got it right. It wasn't an option when the 3.6l came along and it also was not an option on a Cayman S. At least Porsche has listened and it made it back on the order sheet in 2009.
