Suggestion

only the first half or so of the tank is metered the second half is calucalted so only filling the bottom half and not changing the float position will not affect the fuel level display

So here I am looking for help, my 02 C2 did some funny things a couple times when filling with gas when it wouldn't register full until I cruised a block or two from the gas station.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This has happened twice in a row now so I assume it's a slight issue. When the tank has around 1/4 full, I'll go to the gas station and put in $20 (or roughly 7.5 gallons). The car's fuel gauge does not register the difference in fuel until usually the day after. Is this normal or should I get the fuel sensor checked out by the dealer? I think the fuel gauge was an issue on some of the 02s but I'm not sure if that means the fuel gauge just stops reading all together or if it's symptoms like mine.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anyone else have the same issue?

POST 4Original post

mine does the same thing....never got it looked at...usually i'll shut the car off, start it back up and it'll register.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For me, the car is already off when I'm fueling and once I crank her back up, it won't register until the morning after.

POST 6Original post

yea i realized when i bought the car. Figured When you drive a Porsche you should not cheap out on Gas, i have to put in atleast $30 of gas for it to register a little above half.... So now i always fill Full....

POST 7Original post

I would get it checked out, it should be covered under warranty. The Incorrect Fuel Level Display TSB from Porsche suggests rerouting the fuel pressure pipe inside the tank and using tie-wraps to stop it from happening again.

POST 8Original post

I have never had this problem, 'cuz I always "fill 'er up" when I am getting low on gas. Why would you want to put in only half a tank of gas?

POST 9Original post

if the car in question is a c4 or a turbo its completly normal. only the first half or so of the tank is metered the second half is calucalted so only filling the bottom half and not changing the float position will not affect the fuel level display

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I may just fill it up and see what happens... The first time I had $20 on me to fill up with and saw the gauge issue. 2nd time I did the same to see if I could replicate the problem.

POST 11Original post

I hate to have to stop at the gas station, so I always fill up full and have never had this issue.

POST 12Original post

you have to have the ignition off when filling..it resets the computer

POST 13Original post

Hmmm, mine registers the fuel as soon as I start it up (after fueling). My Boxster works the same way.

POST 14Original post

C2S AND BOXTSER READ ALL THE TIME AS I STATED BEFORE, C4S AND TURBOS ONLY READ OVER HALF A TANK UNDER THAT IS A CALCULATED VALUE

POST 15Original post

Man, I'm impressed again at how much good information there is from other Rennlist members. Admittedly I don't spend as much time reading the forums, I miss the old days where I would receive the daily digest with 130+ posts. So here I am looking for help, my 02 C2 did some funny things a couple times when filling with gas when it wouldn't register full until I cruised a block or two from the gas station. Tonight I filled it and it stayed on empty, warning light and OBC making me wonder if I just spaced out while waiting for the tank to fill and whether I'd actually put any gas in it! I stopped at another gas station, but it would only take a couple gallons and shut off. I made sure to pull the key out then put it back in, and even after a 20 mile drive from my shop to home it still shows empty. So I search through the tech area of the 996 forum to find some insight and there's the freakin' TSB that likely leads right to the culprit-yowza! I'm indebted, thank you guys for sharing. yeehaw. -Rod Birch

Not that I need to support Brad, but the C4 and Turbo fuel tanks have a hump in them (to accommodate AWD). The upper hump is where the fuel sensor is, so there is no direct reading of the amount of fuel left in the lower hump...interesting engineering.
