I replaced all of the coil packs $180 for parts, no visible cracks on any coil pack.

Suspected cause
Unfortuanately I don't remember the exact codes, but he told me it was probably a cracked coil that got wet.

Suggestion
You should check these to make sure they are not blocked with plant litter or water can back up and run into areas where it can cause grief.

Suggestion
A misfire can also cause the engien to rattle, especially if you are running a thin oil as there is not enough pressure to hold componants tightly in place.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm a nervous wreck right now so don't jump on me if I don't type this up right.
I bought my car at 57k and it has been absolutely perfect up to 63k, I just started it and it sounded like it was misfiring and a bit rattly, then the check engine light started flashing. It sounded rough right as I turned it on but I figured it could have been because it had been sitting out in a nasty rainstorm all of yesterday. I pulled forward a couple feet and the check engine started blinking so I backed it up and turned it off.
If anybody says IMS I'll kill them, my wedding is coming up and money for something like that just doesn't exist.
Symptoms: Rattle, misfire, blinking check engine, no loss of power. Was out in the rain all day yesterday and last night.
Please please please.
Already contacted work and I'm calling up the Porsche shop nearby as soon as they open, just somebody give me some good news.
I like that a lot more. Oh! It actually had a misfire once before while at a body shop, though it smoothed out--attributed to short bursts of driving being moved around the shop.
Getting a scanner will be a bitch, will have to call around later and grab one with the motorcycle. Could you explain the problem with the wet coil a little more? I'm really not thinking straight right now.
Sorry to hear!
I would not start it again and let the dealer look at it.
After all the rain, pray that it is only a fuse.
John
EDIT: Scanner first is definitely a better idea.
Sometimes a coil pack gets small cracks which can cause moisture to interfere with their operation. A simple replacement of the coil will fix the problem. You can also get a misfire due to flooding condition in the engine caused by starting and turning off a cold engine in a short time, such as pulling the car out of the garage. A misfire can also cause the engien to rattle, especially if you are running a thin oil as there is not enough pressure to hold componants tightly in place.
It's not raining, but it's not dry. Besides, no way I'm starting it until I at least get a scanner in it and talk with my mechanic.
What could be symptoms of a failing coil pack--aside from misfiring when wet?
Edit: Also, is there any sort of visual inspection I can do?
Just stop fretting until you read the code. If you can't handle the stress of not knowing what is wrong with a car for a few hours, then you have no business getting married and it would be suicide to ever have kids.
Well, the only thing scaring me right now is the idea of telling my wife (yes, already got married but going to have a wedding later) that we have to throw down 15k for another engine!
I'm relaxing now, internet snooping makes it apparent that the coil pack is a much more likely culprit.
Guess I'll just have some breakfast and enjoy my few hours home from work.
So, in your mind, you have already figured on spending $15,000 for a new engine, so if it turns out to be only a hundred dollar repair, you'll have $14,900 to spend on your wife.
I had the same thing happen with my '99 C2. After a particularly heavy rain storm with lots of wind, I had exactly the same symptoms. I read the codes and called my service manager. Unfortuanately I don't remember the exact codes, but he told me it was probably a cracked coil that got wet. I let the car sit for a day and after it dryed out, it started right up normally and ran fine after that. It was never a problem again. The problem probably only happened due to a combination of the way the car was parked and the heavy wind with heavy rain. The coils do need to get replaced at some point, but it is not a big deal.
Yep, car is fine now. At least now I know what the hell that is should it happen again, without having to lose my head.
Thanks a ton gents, off to the shop.
Can we have a poll about everyone who panicked about their engine to find out it was something other than catastrophic?
(BTW, not that your panic is unnatural, especially if you read this board.)
missed that one,
this was supposed to be "reply #1"
Also he said he had a wife, so there I think there is a "new wife" pic rule too??
Seriouly, sounds like coil packs to me too.
<raises hand high>
I had a panic attack and do so every time I start my car.... Then when I get back in the garage I tell my sweety how much I enjoyed the ride and tell her what a great job she did.....The nice thing about the car (and the wife) is they both know how to calm me down when I get stressed out.
This board can do that too (ut sometimes has the opposite effect...)mostly, knowledge is power, and knowing what's wrong will help get you thru it....SO if you dont KNOW, dont panic....be calm and diagnos it...then fix it.
i initially misread your post and thought that you tell your wife "how much I enjoyed the ride and tell her what a great job she did".
i know that usually relieves my stress :P
CEL still on. This code will tell you which cylinder and from that you'll know which coil pack needs to be replaced.
If CEL not on and no misfire or other DTC to clue you in, spraying each coil pack with distilled water from a spray bottle then starting engine until you get the symptom again will tell you which coil pack bad.
Also, check for any signs of dampness in either trunk, the trunk carpets and inside the cabin its carpets. Give both doors a shake and listen for any sound of water sloshing.
Engine trouble might be water getting into car where it doesn't belong due to plugged drains. You should check these to make sure they are not blocked with plant litter or water can back up and run into areas where it can cause grief.
Some door window seals will leak and let water into door which will get door electrics wet. Usually this causes weird door/window gremlins and only later if ignored or allowed to continue do the gremlins get further away from the doors and appear in other seemingly unrelated symptoms.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Yeah, the CEL was still on as I got it to work (about 3.5 miles). Taking it from here to the dealership around 12:30. I wish I could take it to my indy but he's booked solid today and tomorrow, and it's going to be pouring today... and tomorrow--so to the dealer it goes.
But yeah, CEL still on (The cats must be very unhappy) and it chugged a bit on the way to work, but only at sub-1500 rpm. I just hope it stays dry until I get it to the dealer, which is fortunately under 10 pure highway miles away.
And yes, little bit of panic every time I start my car, "was that the exhaust bouncing off the motorcycle or the engine dismantling?!" but I'm always extremely pleased when I turn it off. If it left me in the same state of panic when I turned it off as when I turn it on there's no way I'd keep it.
Pics to come, I suppose.
Poorly compressed picture:
Edit: The wife is for my eyes only!
I would, but the ****ty thing is is that the nearest Autozone is over twice as far as the dealership. The only thing the same distance is a shady NAPA, and that'd take me down a highly trafficked road.
Besides, this dealer doesn't charge for the scan if you have work done to fix whatever issues show up on it.

Steady CEL, so at this point it's probably just the O2 sensor acting up, isn't it? Rather, just the O2 sensor telling me it's had a bad day. Will they see the code for the misfire or no?
Well, doesn't matter right now, have to head out to the dealer. I appreciate the help folks.
Looks like I missed you but I'll post my two cents anyway.
A 60k service includes changing the spark plugs.
Spank whoever put cracked coils back on without telling you.
If you haven't had a 60k then have them replace the cracked coils then.
If they try to charge you extra labor, spank them too.
You have to remove the coils to change the spark plugs.
If you're strapped for cash you might get by with some electrical tape.
Yep, CEL showed intermittent failure of the coil. Also found a tiny oil leak at the variocam solenoid which is nothing and an otherwise immaculate engine, dry as a bone. Problem is they don't have a coil in stock, or a loaner car, so kind of stuck until tomorrow.
I'll try to keep them honest on the labor.
The moral from this experience is.......don't park the Porsche outdoors!!!!! Build the Porsche it's very own garage....SHE IS THROWING A "TEMPER TANDRUM" BECAUSE YOU LEFT HER OUT IN THE RAIN!!!
The Porsche expects to be treated equally as well as you treat the wife.....I bet you wouldn't leave the wife out in the rain overnight!!!
My wife bought a car cover for me for christmas as we don't currently have a garage. She is the best.
Funny part is it got dropped off at our condo yesterday but the guy didn't knock on the door. Didn't realize until I was taking out some trash that it had come... It was already raining.
No rain, the car started driving roughly, strong gas smell. At lower RPM was lugging. I replaced all of the coil packs $180 for parts, no visible cracks on any coil pack. No CEL btw.
Dave!, since you have saved approximately $14,700, we have a great list of mods we can recommend to help you spend that "found" money!
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, post some REAL !@#$^&* pics!!! Not those @#$%^&* little postage stamp sized things!
Oddly enough I don't have a ton of photos, but I'll see what I can scrounge up.
And would those mods include a florist, reception hall, catering, etc.? Because I've got a feeling that's where it's headed.
Weddings are over rated. Just elope. Since you already did that.... your are done!
Just wait, 20 years from now you'll think about your wedding and what it cost you and you will say to yourself "Self, why didn't you listen to Tim back then?"
