Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

And to those of you who quietly replaced the "you know what" on your 996 and now are enjoying many mile of smiles in these GREAT cars cheers.
Leading evidence: 'Replace "you know what"' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean shop' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Small, very clean shop with nothing but lovely Porsches in sight.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I discussed IMS retrofit in person with Brad and Deven at Hi Tech Automotive in San Rafael. Small, very clean shop with nothing but lovely Porsches in sight. They have experience with the LN Eng kit. When I (finally) find a 996 they will be doing the IMS retrofit.
The Stable only does air cooled (IIRC)
try Euro Motorcars - dude's name is Sokol, he did my 996 clutch and was priced right and is a trained p-car guy

I got two quotes for LN Eng retrofit $2900 and $3200.
This assumes a "small IMS bearing" motor, single or double row. I subsequently learned that the MY00 996 I was considering had a MY06 reman 3.6L engine in place of the factory 3.4L. Loved the way that motor ran for sure... but I have decided that, for me, the IMS retrofit is required. Certainly I at least want the option to do it--which means an earlier m96.
Give Livermore Porsche a call. I spoke to one of the senior techs there and he said they're interested in doing this but they've not done any because no one has approached them to do one.
I suspect you'd prefer a shop that's done some but otoh this is a dealership and these guys have the exhaust systems off these cars, the transmissions out of these cars and the flywheels off and on and perform RMS and IMS end flange work all the time. The shop is clean, well equipped and were I in the mood to have this done I'd have no qualms about having it done there.
Up to you of course, but you might give the dealership a call. Ask for John in service and talk it over with him or go by and speak to him and the senior techs directly and make up your own mind.
If not Livermore, there's Jerry Woods down in Campbell CA IIRC but I think JW sticks with the air-cooled engines. But give him a call.
I do not think Sharkwerks in Fremont does these bearing upgrades but again give the shop a call.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Have you purchased a 996 yet?
One thing is for sure, you certainly hold the record for highest percentage of posts containing the letters I*M*S.
I recently have taken a couple months away from IMSlist, uh I mean Rennlist.
I think it may be time for a break again after simply reading the 1st page of the 996 forum.
To all of you Rennlisters who, like me, enjoy racking up trouble free and worry free miles on your 996.
And to those of you who quietly replaced the "you know what" on your 996 and now are enjoying many mile of smiles in these GREAT cars cheers.
To the rest of you.......
If you want the best deal out there give Flintworks a call. I took my 996 in for an oil change and the guy was straight up. He's done quite a few IMS retrofits and had the best price in town. He quoted around $1500 if nothing else needed to be replaced. He'll be doing mine as soon as my clutch is due.
9elf in Santa Rosa did my clutch, RMS (with the correct tool, setting it in the required 5mm), and the Ln bearing with plate and bolts for 2500$. Michael is solid no bull**** guy with the tools (including the Porsche computer, which is pretty much a must have if you have ANY electrical issue, reading these painful threads with people spending months rooting around to find a bad 50$ plastic bit, I don't get it), he got the job done in 48 hours. My leak was the RMS, my bearing was fine. I drive 2500 miles a month and look to get at least 100K out of the clutch so the bearing upgrade while in there seems like a good idea.
