I just changed the whole suspension last month to RoW030, and it is under extended warranty until next year.

When I was looking, I mostly used ebay motors and autotrader.

I turned up there with a cashier's check for $1k as a deposit to show I was serious.

Off the top off my head: Bose sound system, Xenon headlights, PSM, leather, power seats, can't think of anything else although I could check the sticker.

I am still not sure why I want to sell it, but I think it is not a great fit here in Miami.
Looking for my first porsche is driving me nuts. I found a nice 03 996 nicely loaded but when the inspection was done it seemed like the owner use this car as a backboard with scratches all over it.
There are plenty of 01's to be had, a nice one with an aero kit but i keep thinking of the upgrades that happen in 02.
Anyone know a nice 02 to 04 996 manual priced from 30k to 35k (if it was something really good i would probably up my budget) in the NYC metro area please let me know.
Thanks
Up your budget just $2 or $3k and you can be in a 997
If you want a 996 that's cool. Just be aware that there are a LOT of options out there. Also, don't be afraid to look on ebay
30 - 35K seems high, at least for where I live. One can find them all day long for 25-28k. I paid 28k for mine in perfect condition with 44k miles. I know the place I bought mine ships high-end cars all over the world. Might be something to look into...
Just keep looking and don't be afraid to look outside your geographic area. I found my car in Boston and brought it to NC. Helps if you narrow down color and option choices so that you can more easily sort through ads.
Use SearchTempest to look at Craigslist ads beyond your own city.
Anyone else think that part of the PCA site needs a complete revamp? It is a mess and hard to find. The search function is worthless. Model it after Autotrader and I bet it would be really successful.
I think its way harder to find a nice Porsche in the NYC area as compared to say South Florida or the left coast. For some reason, there are not that many Porsches in our neck of the woods. When I was looking, all I could find where ones that where either "pimped" or abused otherwise, or garage queens with exorbitant asking prices. Good luck with your search... and make sure to get a PPI
This one doesn't have a price ,but condition wise interior etc should put it in your price range. It just got bought at auction.
I looked at it before it got auctioned and found out it has a Porsche refub engine done in2009

I agree that inventory in the NYC area is tight whereas if you head out west, they are a dime a dozen.
You may want to take a look on autotrader.com. You can really fine tune your selection there to find just what you are looking for and then if something jumps out at you, you can have a remote PPI done and if everything comes clean and after seeing plenty of pics, spend a couple of hundred dollars, hop on a flight and give it a good once over and then if all is well, have it shipped (or drive it) back home. This assumes you are looking only on the East Coast though. While the extra $1,000 you may pay to find the right beauty may be steep b/w airfare and/or shipping, it's better than settling on something that isn't exactly what you want and then you end up with regret. Just food for thought.
I've been looking for a 996 too. I've looked at all the coupes within 100 miles (5 cars), made one offer but PPI found too many expensive issues. Still searching.
Can I ask what sort of optional equipment did you get with a MY02 for $28,000? So far I have been adding $5000 to the asking price to cover RMS and valve cover leaks as most 996 I have looked at has a wet sump cover and leaking valve covers. A dry engine would certainly save me a few bucks or maybe move me up a model year or two! Some people say oil leaks are par for the course, others say their engine is dry as a bone...
It could definitely use a revamp.
I don't think it's the best place to find a used Porsche, but it's another alternative. PCA members tend to take care of their cars, so if you find one there, there's a good chance that it will be in good shape.
The PCA Mart is also a bit famous (infamous) for high asking prices. But there is always room for negotiation.
The bottom line is that you have to scour all of the sources - PCA, CL, Autotrader, Cars.com, Excellence and eBay. If you do that and keep an open mind on location and travel or shipping, you will find your car.
When I was looking, I mostly used ebay motors and autotrader. I was looking nationally, but got lucky and found what I was looking for in my home city. Don't be afraid to expand your search radius to get the right car. Folks here can help you get a good PPI even if it is across the country.
It took about two months of daily looking to find the right car. Just be patient. Get what you want so you won't have regrets later. It will be worth the wait.
In my experience, waiting for the right car is worth it, not just for the satisfaction but for the potential $$ saved. I had my sights set on an 02 plus car. But a lot of these were in the higher range of my budget. Then I started considering Mk1 as a lot of Renlister's have these and I though well, it cant hurt. So I started checking them out. An lo and behold, I ended up with a 99 cabrio in pretty decent shape. Last owner had it for 6 years and had good records. And, he had recently (month before selling) had the IMS bearing issue adressed. Plus new clutch and soft top a year ago! I was lucky in this private sale as the seller had been messed abut by a few potential buyers. I turned up there with a cashier's check for $1k as a deposit to show I was serious. And two days later, I was driving the car home!
Wait for the right one. U will see it was worth it.
Off the top off my head: Bose sound system, Xenon headlights, PSM, leather, power seats, can't think of anything else although I could check the sticker. Not a scratch, ding, or stain, full service record, RMS and other typicals done.
Just my opinion of course, but I would take a nice well kept 996 over a 997 that's
not
in similar condition. There are 997s for high $30s, but how nice are they? Depends on what the OP wants for his $30-$35k. That should fetch a nice 996, but prices are creeping up lately. Just do a pre-owned search on Porsche.com and the 996 asking prices are similar if not higher than 2 years ago.
I would not sell mine for $35k right now. That may sound crazy, but what else would $35k buy in similar condition, options, and miles? The 996 market seems to be going in the right direction for current owners.
I wouldn't get too picky about options. Finding a clean car in the year(s) trim level you want, with colors you like is the most important. I wouldn't pass a car up because it didn't have embossed headrests. You can always have that done if it is really important to you.
If it doesn't have something you feel is really important, then that can be a negotiating point.
Remember, upgrades are half the fun.
I bought my 2002 for $26.5K two years ago. It has very few options but the selling point for me was a factory reman engine.
I had another 2002 before that. Also a great car, but it had full leather and Bose.
The Bose was much better than the stock radio in my car now, but stereos are easy to upgrade after the fact...prior to 2003 they are anyway. The 2003+ models have stereos integrated with the cars operating computers.
The full leather dash though was really really nice and this can't practically upgraded afterwards.
Like it or not, you'll pay extra for a popular colour too. My first one was seal grey - loved it. My current one in Arctic silver - love it.
Good luck - one willl come up. The hunt is half the fun.
I purchased my 99 for 19k with 67k on the ticker. Leaves me a lot of room ($$$$) to add whatever I want to it. Car is solid and I saved a good bit of money. Dont limit yourself.... Good hunting.
Me too... It ain't easy... finding the right car! A bit frustrated myself... and soooooo unsure what year, what model , blah blah blah. Shifter karts and bikes were much easier. Buzz
Keep getting at it... I just got lucky with my purchase price and model year.. Sometimes its timing with finding the car with the right price and once you find it you have to ponce on it or someone else will. Lucky for me I was able to put a down payment right on the internet via paypal to hold the car and then have her PPI'd, took a short flight down to pick her up and about 200 miles of smiles till the clutch pedal assembly started acting up and making the last 150 mile drive just so so. But after getting a good nights sleep and finding out its not a major thing to get fixed, I'm elated.
thanks for all the posts, i am starting to look more nationwide. I am not looking for a C4 or cab and i am trying to be patient.
ps the pca is a terrible place to look for cars
Just curious why you made that comment? One would think that PCA owner's would take care of their cars better than the ordinary? I would think so anyway.
I had to go to minn. to get miy car, I even considered one in Ohio.....the right car is out there, it just may not be in your back yard.
The PCA site can be priced fairly, I've even seen some great deals with people just trying to get rid of race parts.
Auto Trader and Cars.com help you shop when you're serious, e-bay just gets you started.
The 997 or MkII 996 for that matter are comparable to a MkI 996, they all have the same "issues", very similar performance, and can all be maintained and upgraded pretty much the same. In your price range a 996 is a good option.
hahaha
another 20k over that and you can get a nice RS clone
(there is one I have been drooling over at the shop...its unreal how much it is calling me...I also know of a real 73'RS and the price more than I can even understand...lts say more than 1.5x what I paid for my house - wow)
I spent 15 months to find my '99 Cab, started looking in '02. It was several hundred miles away. It paid off! It was a gem, had it 7 years, then easily sold it for more than high book.
I spent over 10 months to find my Turbo. Had several PPIs done on cars that didn't meet my expectations. Settled on a car that was mechanically perfect, heavily serviced, very low mileage, all books and records, but not my first choice in color, and it's a manual, I wanted a Tiptronic.
Now that I've had the car a couple of months, I'm fine with the color and the manual trans. Glad I put the mechanicals and low mileage ahead of everything else. A car that still looks and smells brand new inside is better than a moldy beater in your favorite color.
it had nothing to do with the owners and their cars, the website and classifieds are not that great in my opinion.
those are the Pirelli ladies from when i won the Grand Am Mazda Rx8 giveaway last year.
At that budget just be patient. You will find her
Try different local and other cities/states classifieds on Autotrader and Craigslist. There are out there
You will find one & it will find YOU
i posted something just like this when i was looking for mine, took me 2 months of HARD SEARCHING, couldn't even sleep sometimes, it consumed my life lol..seriously..but then i found the "One"
I am thinking about putting my car for sale.
I just moved to Miami Florida and here the traffic is too intense to enjoy it.
She is a Texas car, never seen snow and barely rain. I just changed the whole suspension last month to RoW030, and it is under extended warranty until next year. 2003 C2, no PSM, 6 speed, full leather. bose, bi-xenon, dimming mirror, slate grey ext with black interior, Dension ipod addon to the factory bose system. 36k miles. 30k miles service done at porsche dealer and car was previously cpo and I got all record , even the window sticker laminated and the 3 keys. what else...oh full factory carbon parts: air vent, surround console, door handles, center console. I got a nice Porsche cover I bought at suncoast. I think that's it. oh also it has the Porsche sport exhaust hack and the B&M short shifter. The undercarriage looks really good and clean. PPI welcome. I'd like 33k for it.
I posted pics of my dension install on renntech and install of suspension here on rennlist you should be able to find the pics. (PICS BELOW ARE BEFORE row030 suspension and also it now have the grey speedo dials. anyways I 'll try to get some pics of the latest setup)
I'll post some so you guys can tell me if it is priced right. I am still not sure why I want to sell it, but I think it is not a great fit here in Miami.
A lot of good advice on looking for the right car. After reading the AutoTrader and Cars.com listings for a few days, you will start to get an idea of the features that you want on your car. When I was looking for my Turbo, I put color and interior features high on my list. Found exactly the car I wanted. It was listed on Ebay by a local dealer, had it PPI'd by my own indie, and it passed with flying colors. They pulled it off the auction, negotiated a nice discount and sold it to me. I couldn't be happier.
Don't be afraid to come up with a list of things that you want. There are a LOT of cars out there, and there is one or more with exactly (or nearly) what you want. Hold out for the car that matches your desires, and it will make you smile every time you sit in it. I still get a big grin every time I start mine up, and still walk backwards after every time I park it.
The best advice I can five you is DON'T get emotionally involved with ANY car. If there is some reason to not buy it (something fails in the PPI for instance) walk away. There will be another in your future. Getting emotionally involved will lead to a bad buy decision. Trust me. Also, don't worry about buying long distance. People do this ALL THE TIME. I bought my first 996 NA in Texas. Had a remote PPI done, flew down, did a confirmation drive and drove it home to Chicago. It was a great experience, and there is no more enjoyable way to learn about your car than a 1,000 mile trip home.
Just draw up your list of wants, be patient, find a car, ask the membership for an indie in the neighborhood, and negotiate for the price you want. You WILL find the car you desire. Best of luck.

Any suggestions on checking out a car that's far away (e.g., opposite coast)? Just let it go and wait for something closer to pop-up...because one eventually will? If I knew someone in the area, I'd ask them to take a look but I don't.

I can't tell you anything about the car other than what is in the ad and the dealer is reputable.
It is located in central PA. Getting a ppi may be a bit of chore.
I should get commission on this thing..it is the second time I have posted it here and I don't really know the guy that well.
I've had the same problem. Like today at the grocery store. But I knew for sure the car was in the line of cars I was walking along even though it was hiding real good behind those big clunkers.
Dont' worry, you'll find it
