Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Suggestion

Monitoring/checking the engine coolant temp and air intake temp from a cold start as the engine idles and noting any anomalous temp readings might be a valuable exercise.

Suggestion

A 'test' might be to remove the oil filler cap and create an air leak that would compensate for the suspected overly rich mixture.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Folks, need some help if you can. We have a 1999 996 that came in for an engine replacement. Customer brought a 2001 engine in and after swapping over all the obvious stuff it fired right up, ran and idled just fine. However, once it warmed up (not too long after it is started cold) it suddenly dies. It simply won't idle. It drives around just peachy but simply will not idle once warm. This is repetative. That is, once cold, starts right up and idles fine. Once warm, dies. (but can still be driven) Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Didn't '99 come with manual/mechanical throttle and idle control valve and '00 and later engines came equipped with e-Gas? Something to consider. Dying after warmed up... I would consider the coolant or air temp sensor reporting the wrong temp once warm. The sensor reports the cold temp ok but as the engine warms up the sensor still reads cold. The DME continues to provide an overly rich mxture and it is possible the engine could die from an overly rich mixture. That the engine runs when driven suggests the open throttle and resulting mixture is not as rich as it is at idle thus the engine runs when the throttle is being used. Monitoring/checking the engine coolant temp and air intake temp from a cold start as the engine idles and noting any anomalous temp readings might be a valuable exercise. A 'test' might be to remove the oil filler cap and create an air leak that would compensate for the suspected overly rich mixture. 'course, there can be a fuel supply problem, pressure problem. An engine transplant can have a electrical or vacuum line loose or damaged or a fuel line pinched, etc. Sincerely, Macster.
